I 4 1,704,844 PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE Bonner STEWART, or os AneELEs, CALIFORNIA;
COMBINED (:I'GABETTE HOLDER AND LIGHTER.
Application filed November s, 19:28. Serial No. 317,537.
This inventionrelates to new and useful improvements in cigarette holdersand lighters and alms to provide acombmed device for use in automobiles and other vehicles, home's,-
5 offices, and the like whereby cigarettes may be singly delivered and lighted immediately subsequent to the delivery thereof for obviously saving time and overcoming the necessity of using matches," separate lighters or other igniting devices separate from the present combined holder and lighter.
Generally speaking the present .in'vention consists ,ofa chamber for the cigarette constructed to receive a plurality of cigarettes arranged in longitudinal superposed con dition and having means. at the lower end of the chamber whereby to singly withdraw the same therefrom, means being located adjacent thereto for bringing about the lighting of the cigarette at one end thereof.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character thati's of extremely simple construction and inexpen= sive of manufacture, and one thatv is highly efficient. in its operation and well adapted, for all the purposes intended.
With the foregoingand other objects in View as the nature of the invention will be better ,understood the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of partshereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed In the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts Figure 1 is a front elevation of the com-. bineddevlce. v v
Figure 2 1s a detail longltudmal transverse section taken substantially upon the line 2-2" drawing my novel combined device consists 0 of a clgarette chamber or hous1ng5 of predetermined length and of anfare'ain horizontal and transverse cross section toloosely receivea plurality of superposediand horizontally arranged cigarettes-A. Arranged 5 within an opening in the' front wall of thischamber is. a glass panel 6 in order that the and be moved forwardly without engaging mormally ter'minates'directly in back of the cigarettes within the chamber may be readily viewed: The upper end of this chamber is open and provided with a suitable lid 7 while depending from the center of the lid at the inner side thereof is a chain or other flexible element Sto the lower end of which is secured a weighted follower 9 resting upon the uppermost/cigarette and serving to normally force the cigarette in a downward direction.
The lower end of this chamber 5 is open; while the front wall at thislower open end 1 terminates in slight spaced relation with the lower end of the back wall as clearlydisclosed in -Figure 2. The lower end of this chamber 5 is constructed with or arranged within a box-like housing 10 open at its topside forwardly of the chamber 5 and also open at its forward end as also illustrated in Figure 2.- The lower open end of the chamber 5 terminates in spaced relation with the bottom .Wall of this housing so that the cigarettes A may drop singly into the housing,
the forward wall of the chamber Thebottom wall of the housing 10 directly beneath the lower end of the chamber 5 is provided with a guide member 11 freelylslidable 1 through which is a stem 12 the forward end ofwhich is bent to pr6vide a finger engaging hook 13 whereby'said stem may be moved forwardly." The rear end of this stem is provided with an upwardly. and then forwardly extending finger 14, the inner end of which rear wall of the chamber 5 and is providedat this end with a horizontal curved plate 15 for engaging the lowermost cigarette a in the chamber 5 so as to move thesame forwardly into the cigarette receiving chamber designated generally by the reference character 16. Between this finger 14 and the rear Wall of the housing 10 is aretractile coil spring 17 for the purpose of normally returning this finger 11 and stem 12 to the position illustrated in Figure 2.. It is obvious that the bot- 'tom wall ofthe housing 10 in back of the chamber 5 be provided with a slot through which.- the connecting portion between the stem 12 and finger 14 extends. 05 The cigarette receiving chamber. 16 is 5 formed within the housing 10 as an integral part of the housing,'.and the lower end of the chamber 5 if desired. However, this construc- .tion maybe provided in any suitable manner..-
At the forward end of one of the side walls of j.
the receiver 16 forwardly of the chamber 5 there is located a lighting unit 18 equipped with a coil 19 that projects through an opening in the wall of the receiver, and into said receiver as clearly illustrated in Figure 3 so .3 that the adjacent end of a cigarettebeing projected into the receiving chamber will con-.
' tact with said coil. i
This coil has-electrical connection with a storage battery or other source of electrical current through the medium of a pair of normally separated spring contacts 20-20 located upon the adjacent end wall of the housing 5 and inside of said housing and in back of the unit 18. Connected to the rear end of the cigarette ejecting finger 14 is a cross bar 21, the end thereof adjacent the contact -v20 being provided with a forwardly extending contact engaging finger-'22, so that when the stem 12 is pulled forwardly, this 20 finger 22 will engage the rear-most spring contact for'forcing it into engagement with the other contact which will result in the closingof the circuit to'the coil 19 of the lighter lunit 18. v In opposed relation with this coil 19, the opposite end wall of the receiving chamber '16 is provided with a plurality of perforations 23, while. attached to the outer sideof this wall around said perforation is the nippic 24 of a collapsible air bulb 25. I This bulb 25 is contacted by the forward plated end '26 of a forwardly extending finger 27 provided upon the adjacent end of. said cross bar 21. Obviously as the cross bar 21 is moved forwardly the bulb 25 will be collapsed so that when the bar is released the bulb on expanding will suck air through the opposite end of the cigarette in engagement with the coil causing the lighting of the cigarette. -D The forward end of the bottom wall of the -cigarette,receiving chamber 16 is provided with an upturn-ed skirt portion 28 to prevent the accidental rolling of the cigarette from the receiver. Furthermore, the bottom wall of the receiving chamber directly in back of this skirt 8 is provided with an upwardly extending rolled portion 29 to prevent the ac.-
cidental return movement ofthe cigarette within the receiving chamber..- 4
In v1ew of the foregomg dcscnption when considered in con unction with the accompanying drawings it will lie-apparentthat I claim;
Having thus described the. invention,-what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s L In a'cigarette dispenser," a magazine; a
cigaretterec'eiving bracket mounted adjacent said magazine; an electrical igniter and a collapsible bulb mounted at opposite ends of said bracket; an ejector associated with said dispenser; a switch controlling said igniter;
and mechanism for actuating said ejector,
bulb,and switch in a predetermined order; the said mechanism comprising a shdable bar mounted 1n the dispenser transversely of and to the rear of said magazine; the said bar having formed thereon a plurality of integral forwardly projecting arms of unequal length, thelsaid bar and arms being positioned with respect to said ejector, bulb and switch respectively, to eject a cigarette, compress said bulb, and actuate said switch on the forward stroke thereof, and to allowsaid bulb to expand to produce a suction, and cut off said switch on the return stroke.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
