MARTIN J. BOWLING, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ATLANTIC STAMPING COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
MILK STRAINER.
Application filed September 14, 1926. Serial No. 135,353.
The present invention relates to milk strainers and an object thereof is to provide a strainer which will support the strainer cl h or material in such a manner that the of the same is prevented whereby cleaner milk is obtained. A further object of the invention is to hold the strainer cloth or material effectively in position between two strainer elements.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in tie appended claims.
In. the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a str'iner constructed in accordance with this in vent-ion i Fig. is a plan view;
Fig. 3 is a side view with the strainer cloth or material and the holding element removed F a i is a plan view of the holding cap;
5 is a side view of the holding cap;
6 is an enlarged section on the line 2 and an enlarged section on the line A strainer cloth or material for milk when supported only at its edges sags at its center where it collects dirt which is eventually forced through the cloth or material by the pressure of the milk, thus contaminating the milk. According to this invention, the cloth or material is supported so that sagging at any point is prevented and at the same time the cloth or material is clamped so that the dirt cannot pass beyond the edges of such cloth or material.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the strainer embodies a funnel member 1 which is formed from a single piece of stamping to provide a reduced cylindrical portion having a strainer element 3 formed in one piece therewith and provided with a plurality of openings 4. Held to this reduced portion 2 of the strainer element of the funnel member is a strainer cloth or material 5. The holding means for this strainer cloth or material is in the form of a cap 6 with a strainer element 7 in the bottom thereof formed in one piece with the cap. About the strainer element 7 is provided an imperforated annular rib 8 which is pressed from the cap inwardly to cooperate with an annular imperforated portion 9 on the reduced portion 2 about the strainer element 3.
To hold the cap 6 to the reduced portion 2, any suitable means may be employed. In this instance the reduced portion 2 has two diametrically arranged pins or projections 10 which are adapted to enter into cam slots 11 formed in the edge of the cap 6.
In arranging the strainer cloth or material in position, the strainer cloth or material is stretched over the strainer element 3 of the reduced portion 2 and thereafter the cap 6 is fitted thereover, so that the pins or projections enter the cam slots 11, the turning of the cap 6 after such entry efiecting the drawing of the annular rib 8 toward the imperforated annular portion 9 of the reduced portion and firmly binding the strainer cloth or material between the reduced portion and the cap. This forms a tight seal and prevents any of the milk passing upwardly between the cap and the reduced portion and confines the milk and the sediment to the strainer cloth or material. The strainer cloth or material is held in a taut condition between the two strainer elements 3 and 7 and cannot collect sediment at any one point. The openings in the two strainer elements will necessarily be out of alignment in most instances, so that the forming of pockets in the strainer cloth or material is reduced to a minimum.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A milk strainer comprising a funnel member having a cylindrical. portion provided with a bottom in one piece therewith, a multi-perforated central portion and an imperforated annular portion surrounding the perforated portion, a cap having a cylindrical flange fitting the exterior of the cylindrical portion of the funnel member, said cap being provided with a bottom in one piece with the flange having a multi-perforated central portion, and an imperforated annular portion surrounding the perforated central portion, strainer material arranged between the bottom of the cap and the bottom of the cylindrical portion of the funnel memher, and interlocking means between the cap and the cylindrical portion of the funnel member having provision for drawing the imperforated portion of the bottom of the cap against the imperforated portion of the bottom of the cylindrical member in order to clamp the strainer material. between the tWo bottom members.
2. A milk strainer conipdsing a funnel member having a cylindrical portion provided With a rigid bottom, said rigid bottom having a Inulti-perforated central portion and an iniperforated annular portion surrounding the perforated portion a cup having a cylindrical flange fitting the exterior oi the cylindrical portion or the tunnel nieinher, said cap being provided with a rigid bottom having a inulti-perforated central portion, and an iinperforated annular portion pressed inwardly to provide a rib surround ing the perforated central portion, strainer material arranged between the bottom of the cap and the bottom of the cylindrical portion of the funnel member, and interlocking niezine between the cap and the cylindrical portion of the tunnel. member having provision for drawing the rib oi the cap against the iniper'torated portion of the bottom of the cylindrical portion in order to clamp the strainer material between the two bottom portlone.
