coAL AND ASHES HANDLING SYSTEM."
Application filed November 5, 1998 Serial No. 672,775.
The present invention relates to such a system having a ski-p hoist bucket and a car either with or without a hopper arranged for operation between the two, and the principal object of the present invention 1S to electrically insure the proper operation of each in conjunction with the other, or otherwise stated, to provide such a system in which the bucket of an electrically operated skip hoist will automatically move to the limits oi its travel while an electrically propelled car will automatically move to the limits of its travel and in which the bucket will not dump unless dump receiving means are in proper position or condition for the reception of its contents.
The invention may be said to comprise the combination of a'skip hoist, electrically operated with provisions to automatically reverse the bucket at the limits of its travel, and an electrically operated car running automatically back and forth on a horizontal track conveying material elevated by the skip bucket. The car may receive material direct from the skip bucket or from a hopper into which the skip bucket discharges. In the latter. case a gate is used on the hopper which is operated by the car in its last few feet of travel back to the leading. point. The car is provided with a or door on the bottom opened upon contact with a device which can be placed along the track at any selected point to open the gate or door to discharge the load preferably on the outward trip. The door or gate is automatically closed before reaching the loading point. operating the car may be mounted on it or may operate by means of ropes or cables. In cases where the car receives its, load direct from the skip bucket an electrical device operates in such a way that unless the car in loading position the'skip bucket will stop before dumping its load and will proceed again as soon as the car is in loading position. In cases where the ear receives its load from a hopper into which the skip bucket discharges a switch device is employed to stop the skip bucket when the hopper is full until the car has taken enough material from the hopper to give room for a skip bucket full of material. The fundamental combination is of a skip hoist bucket and car driven by separate The motor for means with. connections made electrically,
to insure the proper operationof each in conjunction with the other.
The invention may be further said to comprise a coal and ashes handling system having in combination a skip hoist, means for moving the bucket of the skip hoist to the limits of its travel thereby dumpin it, provisions adapted to stop the bucket is art of dumping position, dump receiving devices, andequipment responsive to the dump receiving devices. and adapted-to make said provisions inoperative when the dump reoeiving devices are in receiving condition.
Theinvention-further comprises the imjunction with the other and I Fig. 2 is an elcvational view illustrating a portion oi the skip hoist and car with a hopper interposed between them and constitutin the dump receiving device instead 0 of the car as in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to Fig. l, 1, generally is a skip hoist of whichthe bucket 2 is under normal conditions electrically operated to automatically reverse the direction of motion of the bucket at the limits of its travel. The cable a is a part of the means for moving the bucket to the limit of its travel thereby dumping it. 3 is an electrically operated car running back and forth on a horizontal track 4, and when in loading position receiving material elevated by the skip bucket and when in another appropriate position automatically dumping that material. The cable 6 is a partvof the equipment for moving the car. As described the car 3 receives its load direct from the skip bucket 2, and electrical provisions'andv equipment are provided to prevent the the bucket.
bucket from dumping if the car is not in loading position to receive the dumped ma terial. 5 is a switch operated by the passage of the bucket to control the machinery which operates the bucket in such a way that the bucket is stopped before it dumps. 6 is electrical equipment actuated when the car in loading position to nullify the stopping effect of the device 5 and permit the bucket 2 to travel far enough to dump into the car. 7 is a means for opening the gate 8 of the car to dump its contents and the element 7 may be placed along the track 4 at any desired point within the limits or travel of the car, and when it contacts with the arm 9 extending from the gate 8, the latter is automatically closed, for example, by gravity. It might be sufficient to say that the switch 5 is normally closed and is opened by the passage oi the bucket, that the switch 6 .is normally open and is closed by the car only when in or near loading position, and that these switches 5 and (5 are in parallel relation across the circuit which, when interrupted, stops the bucket and which, when closed, continues the travel of Therefore it either one or the other of: the switches 5 and 6 is closed, the bucket proceeds, but if the car is not in loading position the switch 6 is open and when the bucket in its movement opens the-switch 5, the movement of the bucket is arrested the hopper 71 is full and should not have any more coal dumped into it to bi-eakthe circuit which has been described and so stop the bucket when it opens-switch. 5. For this purpose there is in the hopper a flap 74l pivoted at 75 and turned by the coal in the hopper into position for opening the switch 6 as shown in Fig. 2. In this case the car 3 is driven back and forth from loading to dumping position and its driving connections need not be electrically interconnected with. the driving provisions of the skip hoist.
The term coal and'ashes in the claim is used to include any material which the system can handle.
It will. be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details of con struction, arrangement and mere matters of form without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited to such matters orotherwise than as the prior art and the appended claim may require.
I claim:
In a coal and ashes handling system the combination of a skip hoist, means for moving the bucket of the skip hoist to the limit of its travel thereby dumping it, provisions adapted to stop the bucket short of dumping position, dump receiving devices, and equipment responsive to the dump receiving devices and adaoted to make said provisions inoperative. when the dump receiving devices in receiving position.
WILLIAIVI E. HALE.
