PATENT OFFICE;

COMBINED surrontrnn AND UNDEBGARMECNT.
Application filed June 16,
This invention relates to supporters and undergarments and has particular reference to an undergarment for women, equipped with means for drawing inwardly and downwardly on the diaphragm to' give a youthful, natural, womanly figure to the wearer without subjecting the abdomen to injurious contraction detrimental to the vital organs in the abdominal cavity;
One of the principal objects in view is to provide, preferably as part of an undergarment, means incorporated therewith for engaging the diaphragm and a second means having elastic connection with the first means and engaging the posterior for exerting an inward pressure upon said parts, whereby to eliminate undue protrusion thereof and to lend to the figure of the wearer a youthful and graceful appearance.
The invention furthermore comprehends a means of thecharacter set forth which serves to exert a downward and inward pressure upon the diaphragm so as to eliminate the usual upward pressure thereon which tends to lift and enlarge the bust to unnatural proportions as is the case where corsets are used of the type which embrace and contract about the medial portion of the trunk,
The invention furthermore contemplates an undergarment equipped with a: means of the character set forth and designed in such a manner as to eliminate the necessity of wearing a plurality of individual or separate undergarments, thereby facilitating the operation of dressing or undressing.
The invention furthermore aims to provide a combined undergarment and supporting device of the character set forth which is comparatively simple, inexpensive, and which is highly eflicient.
With the above recited and other objects in view, reference is had to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which there is exhibited one example or embodiment of the invention which is in no way intended as a limitation upon the scope of the appended claim as it is to be clearly understood that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope of said claimmay be resorted to when found expedient.
In the drawings V Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cornbined undergarment and supporting means applied with the same partially open-;

down the side from the upper end to a point slightly below the hip and is closed by hooks and eyes 13 and 14, or any other suitable separable fastening elements, which facilitates the donning or removal of the garment. 1 The inner portion of the back of the slip 10 is provided with a supplemental lining 15, which is further reinforced by a central section of material 16, where it engages the posterior. The front of the inner face of the slip is lined with a supplemental strip 17 within which is secured a diaphragm-engaging element 18. The diaphragm-engaging element is' connected by elastic straps 19 to the supplemental lining 15 at one side, the straps extending downwardly at an angle. Similar elastic straps 20 are permanently attached to the opposite side of the supplemental lining 15 and are adapted for detachable engagement with the opposite side edge of the diaphragm-engaging element by means of hooks and eyes, or other separable fastening elements, 21. Hose supporters 22 depend from the supplemental rear 1ining15 and from the inner lower edge of the body of the slip where theyare concealed by the skirt portion thereof.
In use when the garment is applied, the elastic straps 19 connecting the posteriorengaging portion 16 with. the diaphragmengaging element'18, exert a downward and inward pull on the diaphragm and an ill--- ward pressure on the posterior without ex-' crting a contraction about the waist and structed as to constitute a bust supporter.
From the foregoing it will thus be seen that a supporter as been devised preferably, although not necessarily, as a part of an undergarment for exerting a downward and inward pressure on the diaphragnr and an inward pressure on the posterior, Without crowding the bust upwardly or exerting injurious pressure on the abdomen and rear of the waist to unnaturally pull the latter inward.
What is claimed is:
An undergarment comprising a body enof, elastic connections extending obliquely downwardly from the diaphragm engaging member to the posterior engaging member, whereby to exert inward downward pressure on the diaphragm of the wearer and inward flattening pressure on the posterior of the wearer.
