JOHN N. NELSON, OFPROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR T0 UNIVERSAL OPTICAL CORPORATION, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, A CORPORATION OF RHODE ISLAND.
' OPHTHALMIC MOUNTING.
Applicationiiled mama 18, 1927. Serial m 234,256.
This invention relates to an improved construction of ophthalmic mountlng; and has for its ob ect to provide in such a mounting a pair of spaced eyewires connected by a' bridgev bar, the barbeing connected to the eyewires a substantial distance above the medial line thru said eyewires.
A further object of the invention. is to groove the ends of the bridge-bar and turn them upwardly to'extend alon the surface of the eyewires at the'point 0 attachment.
A still further object of the invention is to notch the eyewires to receive the grooved ends of the bridge-bar so that these ends will lie substantially flush with the surface of the eyewires whenjattached thereto.
With these and other objects in view, the
' invention consists'of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the Fig. 1 is a front view illustrating my im-' proved mounting.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the mounting. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the bridge-bar showing its grooved ends.
Fig. 4 is a section on line l'4 of Fig. 3 showing the shape of the groove at the end of the bridge-bar. T
Fig. 5 is a side elevation ofone of the eyewires showing the same notched in its periphery to receive the grooved end of the bridge-bar.
Fig. 6 is an edge view of the eyewires showing the shape of the notch formed therein.
Fig. 7 is a view illustrating, the upwardlyextending grooved end of: the bridge-bar as extending into the notch in the periphery of the eyewires and soldered thereto.
Fig. 8 is a section on line 88 of Fig. showmg the rooved end of the bridge-baras engaging file notched portion ofthe eye'- solid with its ends grooved and turned upwardly to over the periphery of the eyewires and be soldered thereto, the eyewires beingpreferably notched on its periphery to receive this grooved end of the bridge-bar and permit its surface to lie substantially flush with thatof the eyewires s0 as'to preserve the required symmetrical appearance and finish of the mounting, guards being also attached to the inner surfaces of the eyewires tosupport the mounting on the nose of the wearer; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of the invention and showing one means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished? With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the eyewires of my improved mounting which in this case are formed of metal suba pair of nose stantially V-shape in cross section on their outer surfaces 11 to presentan attractive,
appearance, and U-shaped on its inner surface 12 to receive the lens 13. These eyewires are preferably notched as at 14 on their peripheries to receive the ends of the bridge-bar.
upwardly to extend along the surface of the eyewires and fit into the notches 14 in these eyewires, whereby an extended soldering surface is presented'to render the connection to the eyewires strong, substantial and durable,
and also by notching the surfaces of the eye I i This bridge-bar 15 may be made in any de- 1 sired shape in cross section but in order to form the same rigid I preferably make it of" wires and grooving theinner surfaces of the bridge-bar ends the surface of the bridge-bar is permitted to lie substantially flush, with j that of the eyewires forming an invisible oint and yet one which is very strong and durable, also by providing an extended securing'surface the thin eyewire is reinforced and strengthened where it is called upon to withi stand the greatest strains.
The mounting'is provl My improved ophthalmic mounting is very Y handsome and attractive in appearance and (led with a painof. nose guards 18 which support the same on ioo by my particular means of connecting a bridge member to the eyewires, I have formed a very strong and durable construction.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An ophthalmic mounting having a pair of spaced eyewires each having a notch therein, abridge-bar connecting said eyeWires at a point adjacent their upper edges, said bar having its ends turned upwardly to conform to the contour and extend along the eye Wires and grooved to fit in said notches, whereby its ends lie substantially flush with the surface of the Wires at the point of attachment.
2. An ophthalmic mounting having a pair of spaced metal eyewires substantially V- shape in cross sectional outline, a connecting substantially rigid bridge-bar of a similar shape in cross sectional outline with its ends turned upwardly and grooved, the periphcries of the Wires being notched to receive the grooved ends of said bar at their point of attachment to lie substantially flush with the surface of the wires. v a
In testimonywhereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN N. NELSON.
