PRESS ron rrns AND SIMILAR ARTICLES.
Application filed June 20, 1923, Serial No. 646,518, and in Great Britain February 5, 1923.
This invention relates to presses for wearing apparel of the kind comprising two rigid pressure members yieldingly hinged together along one side, and detachably fastened together along the other side for the purpose of gripping and pressing the garment.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved press of this character, and to this end it comprises the novel combination of elements which I will now describe with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating, by way of example, one construction of press embodying the invention, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a tie press according to the invention;
Fig. 2 illustrates a suitable fastening device.
Referring to Fig. 1 in the form herein shown each of the extensible or yielding hinges connecting the pressure members 1 and 2 is made from a pair of plate springs 11 and 12, of which the plate 11 is fixed to the outer surface of the pressure member 1 and the plate 12 is fixed to the outer surface of the pressure member 2, for instance by means of small screws or nails 13. The free edges of the two plates 11 and 12 project beyond the edges of the partsl and 2 and are provided with hinge eyes adapted to be pivotally secured togetherby a hinge pin as shown at 14. The spring plates 11 and 12 are, as shown in Fig. 1, first curved outwardly slightly and then bent inwardly to meet one another, thereby constituting reflex or arcuate yielding parts in proximity to the hinge point 14 enhancing the flexibility as a whole. As the natural tendency of the plate springs 11 and 12 is to approach one another it will be seen that the arrangement described tends to hold the edge 3 of the part 1 tightly against the edge 4 of the part 2 when the press is closed, but has suflicient flexibility to permit of the said edges being separated to a certain extent when one or more articles is or are secured in the press.
Referring to Figure 2, one form of fastening device is illustrated herein suitable for use with my press. The fastening device comprises a pin, stud, or button 15 on a plate 16 which is fixed to the edge of the pressure member 1 opposite to the hinged edge 3, and
a movable latch member 17 ivoted at 18 to the corresponding edge 0 the pressure member 2 and adapted to engage over the arranged at different distances from the pivot 18, enabling the pressure exerted by the press upon the article within to be adjusted according to the thickness of the article. To facllitate the manipulation of the latch it may conveniently be provided with a smooth knob 20, as shown.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a press of the character described, the combination of two pressure members, a hinge member in the form of a plate spring secured to, and extending beyond one edge of one pressure member, a counterpartal hinge member in the form of a plate spring secured to, and extending beyond the corresponding edge of, the other pressure member, each said hinge member having a yielding reflex part in the portion extending beyond the pressure member, means for connecting the extended ends of the plate springs together so as to compose hinges, and means for detachably fastening the free edges of the pressure members together in the pressure position, said fastening means being adapted to exert a variable pressure to present give corresponding with the give at the said hinges in order to meet the different thickness of the articles interposed between said pressure members.
2. In a press of the character described, the combination of two pressure members, a hinge member in the form of a plate spring secured to one edge of one pressure member and having a portion overlapping and projecting from the said edge, a counterpartal hinge member in the form of a plate spring secured tothe corresponding edge of the other pressure member and having a portion overlapping and projecting from the said edge to mate the corresponding portion of the first-mentioned hinge member, each said hinge member havin a yielding arcuate part at, and integral with, the portion extending beyond the pressure member, eyes on the hinge members for pivotally interconnecting the said members jointly with a pin, and a lever device for detachably fastening the free edges of the pressure members together in the pressing position comprising means for adjusting, at will, the pressure exerted by the press to meet the varying thickness of the articles, and thereby presenting give corresponding with the give permitted by said hinges.
3. In a press of the character described, the combination of two pressure members, two mating hinge members in the form of symmetrically formed pivotally-connected plate springs hinging together the adjacent edges of the pressure members, said hinge members having yielding arcuate portions in them adjacent their pivotal connection,
and a device for detachably fastening the op posite edges of the pressure members and adapted to present give corresponding with the give permitted at the said hinges in order to meet the different thickness of the articles interposed between said pressure members, said device including a cam-like lever-member of the second order provided with teeth in the form of notches for cooperating with a complementary pin, each succeeding notch being at a different distance from the axis of the pivot of the levermember.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ADAM CONGREVE ROGERS.
