This invention relates to an improved cylinder type lock.

A further object-is that'of constructing a lock particularly of the ,type specilied in which the parts will be maintained in proper operative relationship over theentire llfe of the lock so as to prevent ajamming of the parts, and, in some instances, a-Abreakage of the key. 1

1n Figs. 1 to 6 the numeral 10 indicates the lock cylinder,- within the bore of which a plug Contrary to conventional construction, ac- .y Lcording to which the plug terminates at a point immediately adjacent or beyond the rear face of the cylinder, it will be seen that according to the present invention the 'plug may be materially extended beyond the cylinder bore, as has been indicated at 14. Also, it' desired, and as has been shown iii-Figs. 4 to 7 inclusive, this rear end of the plug may be reduced as at 15, but this is largely a matter of manufacturing convenience, and in any event, the keyslot 12 may extend through to this plug end.
As has been shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the cylinder casing 10 may be tormed with a pair of recesses or pockets 16, against the bases of which the ends of springs 1'? bear, these gprings extending beyond the rear cylinder ace. with a transverse bore '18 intersecting the key slot 12, and at this point the plug is encircled by a washer or collar 19, which, in the present instance, has downwardlyextending lugs 20 at diametrically opposite points, and which are ot a size suiciently small to extend within the bodies ot tle springs. By means of this construction it Will be obvious that a constant pressure Will be exerted upon the plug in a rearward direction, and any Wear of the parts will be automatically taken up, and there Will be no danger of -these parts loosening.
With linalspecific reference to this form,
the Washer or collar 19, as in Fig. 8, may be formed With grooves 25 in its outer face and at points in line with the lugs or arms 2U. Thus, an operator will know when the pins and tumblers (not shown) of the lock are in line due to the fact that there Will be a faint click When the parts reach this position. Furthermore, as the lock is operated the washer Will compress the springs, so that the life of the springs will be maintained. `By this construction it will also be obvious that With a key not in position the relative positions of the cylinder and plug will be maintained.
. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 the parts are preferably similar in all respects to those shown in the preceding views, with the exception that the end or extended portion of the plug is encircled by a spring 26, which is interposed between aud has its ends bearing against washers 27 and 28, the outer face of the latter in turn engaging the headed ends of the pin. In this form of device it is of course unnecessary to provide a multiplicity ofsprings or to form the cylinder casing with pockets or recesses such as 16 in the preceding views, and it will bo equally obvious that in this exemplification, as in the preceding form, av constant pressure Will be exerted, to retain the plug in proper position With respect to the parts with Which it is associated.
If it is not desired to utilize a it will be noted that as in Fig. k7 29 may be employed, and the Washer 30 may have its outer'edge flanged upwardly as at 31 (by extrusion or in any other desirable manner) and at points beyond the pin ends yso as to present a pin-confining structure to accomplish the results desired. l
In both of the embodiments illustrated it Will be appreciated that/due to the fact that the plug always remains in properly seated relationship with respect to the cylinder parts headed pin a plain pinV there will be no danger of play coming into existence such as would disalign, the plug and cylinder pins and cause a jamming of the lock. Furthermore, by means of such a construction as is proposed it is unnecessary to carefully grind the end of the plug and apply an end disk thereto in order to prevent its displacement. Furthermore, it is unnecessary to tap and thread the end of the plug, and it will be obvious that the work of assembling can be accomplished with facility.
Finally, with reference to Fig. 10 it will be noted that, if desired, a washer of the nature illustrated inthis ligure may be employed in lieu of that shown in Figs. 1, 2 and This washer includes a body 32 encircling the end of the plug and having portions struck out asat 33, whichportions serve the same purpose as the lugs 20. By a construction of this nature theedges of the Washer overlap and protect the ends of the springs. Also, if desired, in lieu. of the pins shown in these several views a pin may be employed which has a thickened body 34 and reduced cndportions 35. It Will be obvious that this pin may be threaded through the bore to secure the tailpiece as aforedescribed, and that the Washer, under the influence of the spring or springs, will bear against the reduced endn portions and override the shoulders adjacent thereto, as a.consequence retaining the pin against movement.
Furthermore, it Will be noted in this view that the'pin may be formed with an annular groove 36agalinst the sides of which the edge of the tailpiece may bear in order to further preclude against the possibility of vdisplacement of the pin.
Thus, among others, the objects of this invention have been accomplished. and since certain changes may be made in the above construction, and different embodiments of the invention could be made, Without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative ,and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the follow,- ing claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the/invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention Whichas a matter of.

Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l f
1. A lock, including, in` combination, a cylinder, a rotatable plu extending into the bore of said cylinder, a ead 'portion at one end of said ,plug and bearing against a seat formed in said cylinder, and means for yieldingly urging the head of said plug against said seat.

uninterrupted cylinder housing, a plug ro` tatably positioned within the bore of said cylinder and to be rotated by beingacted upon by a proper key, and resilient means for constantly urging said plug inwardly with respect tosaid cylinder.
6.- A lock, including, 1n combination, a cylinder, a plug rotatably positioned within the .bore of said cylinder, a tailpiece comprising a strip of material having a substantially straight end-portion, and means 'for associate ing the endportion of said tailpice with said plug.

A lock, including, in combination, a cyl. inder, a plug rotatably positioned within said cylinder and extending materially beyond the 4end of the same, a washer encircling the endportion of said plug, means connecting said washer with said plug, and resilient means acting y'upon said washer and tendingto retain said'plug in applied position.

16. A cylinder, a plug rotatably positioned within lock,including, in combination, a
said cylinder and extending materially beyond the end of the same, said plug being formed with a transverse bore, a pin positioned within said-bore and having reduced end-portions extending beyond the same, a washer encircling said plug and contacting with the ends of saidfpin, and a spring cooperating with sald washer and urging the same. outwardly with respect to said cylinder.
17. A lock, including, in combination, a cylinder, a. plug rotatably positioned within said cylinder and having its rear end extending materially beyond the same, and means lassociated with the extended portion of the `plug and acting constantly against the rear face of the cylinder to maintain said plug against. axial shifting with respect to the cylinder incident to Wearing of the parts.
18. A lock, including, in combination, a cylinder, aplug rotatably carried by said cylinder and being formed with a transverse slot in its rear end, a tail-piece extending into said slot and being formed with an opening, a pin carried by the rear end of th-e tail-'piece and extending across said slot and through the opening to retainsaid tail-piece in position with respect to the plug and means for maintaining said pin against displacement. i Y
19. A lock, including, in combination, a cylinder, awplug rotatably carried V'by said cylinder, and means extraneous of the lock pins and tumblers for maintaining said plug against rotation and in a predetermined fixed position with respect to said cylinder. y

A lock, including, in combination, a cylinder, a plug rotatably carried by said cylinder and extending beyond the rear face thereot7 a tail-piece, and normally locked, readily releasable means associated With the extended Aportion of said plugand engaging said tailpiecev whereby the latter may be readily detached from or secured to said plug.
21. In combination a cylinder formed With a bore, a plug rotatable within said bore and means extraneous of the locking vmechanism associated with said cylinder andplug andy tending to maintain the latter against any rotation with respect to the former. L- 22. A lock cylinder assembly including a cylinder, a plug rotatably carried within the latter, locking elements associated with said plug and cylinder and to be key-actuated and released and further means tending automatically to maintain said plug against rotation and Iset the same in predetermined positionwith respect to the cylinder.
23. A lock including a cylinder formed with a bore, a plug rotatable within said bore, said 'plug being formed with an opening adjacent its rear end, a pin disposed within said opening and extending beyond the same and a spring act-ing against said pin to maintain the plug automatically against axial shifting.
24. A lock including, in combination, a cylindergformed with a bore, a plug rotatable within said bore and being formed with a key-slot into which a key is to be introduced to rotate the plug with respect to the cylinder and means for automatically maintaining said plug and the slot therein in such position with respect to the cylinder that the introdluction of said key may be effected into said s ot.

A lock including a. cylinder formed with a bore, a plug rotatable Within said bore and being formed with a transverse opening adjacent its rear end, a headed pin disposed Within said "opening and a spring acting against said pin to urge said plug into predetermined position witlr/ respect to the cylinder and to maintain, automatically, said pin against displacement from said opening.
