My invention relates to improvements in washing machines.

' An object of my invention is to provide in a washing machine having a vat in which is disposed a rotatable tub adapted to'serve as Y a washing tub. and a centrifugal drying tub, means whereby certain drainage of the tub may be collected in the vat for further use and other drainage of the tub may be discharged exterior of the vat, such discharge being in large part through the same channels.

An important feature is the provision in i such a tub having discharge apertures of dially extending corrugations. The above ob ects and others, together with scription, accompanying drawings, and ap hoods formed on the inner surface of the tub, which hoods cover such discharge apertures, such tub being also preferably provided on its exterior surface with hoods .over the discharge apertures, which hoods open downwardly to direct the water passing through the apertures into a drainage collector surrounding the tub.
A novel part of the tub is the provision of an overhanging rim flange. My improved washing machine has a frame 10 suitablysupported by legs llwhich carries a vat 12 having a'depending skirt 13 and a removable cover 14. A motor 15 supported below the frame has a drive shaft 16 upon which is mounted a friction driving cone 17 which engages a friction disk-18 carried by a driven shaft 19 which shaft extends upwardly axially through the vat havinga bearing for support in a standard 20 of the frame 10. A protective shroud21 enclosesthe standard 20 and suitable packing 22 may be inserted between the shroud and the standard. .The shaft is provided at its upper end with splines 23 to engage a removable cone clutch 24 to rotate therewith. I provide a tub 25 which has a female cone clutch 26 provided with suitable recesses 26 to engage lugs 27 on the removable male clutch member24 so the tub when seated thereon will-rotate therewith. The remov' able clutclrmember 24 and the weight of the tub is carried on a bearing 28 which rests on the upper end of standard 20.
The tub is provided with an upwardly outwardly-flaring side wall 29 which has an overhanging rim flange 30, a crown-plate 31 being shown as extending over this rim flange The side wall of the tub is provided with a plurality of spaced-apart upright inwardly-extending fins 32 and the bottom of a the tub has a plurality of radial corrugations 33 and a drainage plug 34. The corrugations in the bottom of the tub andthe fins on the side-wall facilitate the washing; operation.
The tub is supported upon the removable clutch member 24 as is shown in Figs. 1 and 6, and is secured thereto by a removable plu 48 which is threaded into the enlarged en the member 26. A. spring 49 is held under compression against the end of shaft 19 by this plug 48.

During the slow rotatable oscillatory movement the clothes are washed. During the movement of rapid continuous rotation the water is expelled from the clothes.
In order that the tub may serve both purposes I provide in the upper portion of its side wall inproximity the overhanging flange 30'a plurality of apertures 34. These apertures are arranged at intervals around the wall of the tub. Over each aperture or group of apertures I provide interior the tub a hood 35 which extends between the side wall of the tub and the overhanging flange. This hood extends circumferentially the tub and is open only at one end. On the Outside of the tubv I provide a hood 36 which extends over the apertures 34.and is open at the bottom to direct the discharge through the apertures downwardly.
There is provided an annular drainage collector 37 in the form of a flange carried by the side wall of the vat'and surrounding the tub below the discharge apertures therein.
This drainage collector is adapted to; collect the drainage from the tub. It has an outlet pipe 38 which has a branch 39 that leads to an overflow bowl 40 and a branch 41 extending through the wall of the vat to discharge exterior thereof. A manually operable gate 42 is provided to regulate the flow of the water. When this gate is closed the water from the outlet pipe will enter the bowl and overflow into the vat.

In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown in connection with my tub 25' a supplemental tub 52 perforated as at 53. This tub is considerably through the member 26 and holds under C0111- pression the spring 49 to 'yieldingly resist the upward movement of shaft 19 and at the same time holds the tub 52 upon the conical member 26. This tub 52 isadapted to receive a relatively limited number of clothes centering them about the axis of revolution of 1 the tub 25, thereby minimizing the vibration of the tubduring its rotation.

In a washing machine, a Vat, a tub ro- -tatal)ly supported within the vat, said tub having a discharge aperture through the upper portion of its side wall, a hood extend: ing from the inner surface of the side wall of the tub and circumferential'ly of the tub over said aperture, said hood being open at one end, a hood extending from the outer surface of the sidewall of the tub downof the'vat, said tub having an upwardly out-. wardly-flaring side wall provided with an "overhanging rim and having a bottom provided with a, plurality of upwardly-projecting radial ribs, said side wall provided with a plurality of upright inwardly-extending fins, the side wall of said tub having a plurality of spaced-apart apertures disposed in proximity to the r. m, a hood extending circumferentially of the tub over each of said apertures, said hood extending between the side wall of the tub and the rim thereon and being open at one end only, water-defl'ect-v ing hoods secured to the outer surface of the tub over each of said apertures and open at the bottom to direct the discharge throu 'h the apertures downwardly, and 'an-annu ar flange extending inwardly from the vat about the tub to catch the discharge therefrom.

In a washing machine, a vat, a tub ro tatably supported within the upper portion of the vat, said tub having discharge apertures'in its side wall, said vat provided with 'a drainage collector surrounding the tub to gather the discharge therefrom, said drain-1 age collector having an outlet provided with a discharge leading into the vat and an outlet adapted to discharge exterior of the vat,
and means for regulating the flow through said outlets to cause the discharge to flow through either of said outlets to the exclusion of the other, said discharge opening leading to the interior of the vat terminating in ahowl, said tub rovided with an independent discharge opening adapted to be moved into position to discharge into said bowl.

In a washing machine, a vat, a tub mounted for rotation within said vat, said tub having an upwardly pro'ectmg axial portion, a smaller supplement 1 perforated tub adapted to be removably seated for support upon said axial portion, said axial portion and bottom of'the supplemental tub having engaging portions adapted to lockthe supple- 7 mental to to rotate withsaid axial portion.

In a washing machine, a vat, a p'erforated tub rotatably mounted therein, an annular drainage collector within the vat and surrounding the tub adapted to catch thecentrifugal'discharge ofthe tub, said drainage collector havin' anoutlet adapted to discharge exteriori y ot' the vat and a discharge outlet which terminates in a basin interior of the vat.
14. In a washing machine, a vat, a perforated tub rotatably mounted therein, an

In a washing machine, a vat, 'a perforated tub 'rotatably mounted therein, said vat provided witha drainage collector adapted to catch the centrifugal discharge of the annular drainage collectorwithin the vat and surrounding the tub adapted to catch the discharge therefrom, said drainage collector tub and prevent the same from falling into the vat, said drainage collector having an outlet adapted to discharge exteriorly of the vat,
said tub provided with an independent outlet, said vat provided with a second drainage collector adapted to catch the discharge from said independent outlet of the tub, and discharge the same exteriorly of the vat.

In a washing machine, a vat, a perfo rated tub rotatably mounted therein, said vat providedwith a drainage collector adapted to catch the centrifugal discharge of the of the tub and adapted to discharge the same either into the vat or exteriorly thereof, said tub provided with gn independent outlet for drainage, said vat provided with a second drainage collector adapted to catch the discharge "from said independent. outlet of the tub and discharge the same either into the vat or exteriorly thereof.
l8. In a washing machine, vat, a clothes basket rotatably supported within the vat,
' said baskethaving a perforated side wall through its perforated side wall .and having a portion adapted to catchthe drainage of the basket drainage collector may through which its contents may be centrifugally discharged upon' rotation and a second discharge opening through which its contents may be drained; an independent drainage collector within the vat adapted to catch thecentrifugal discharge of the basket through its second discharge open- 1n I9. In a washing machine, a vat, a clothes basket rotatably supported in the upper portion of the vat, said basket having a perfo-' rated side wall for the.centrifugal'dischargeof its contents upon rotation of the basket and a controlled in epe'ndent drainage outlet in the bottom of the basket; an independent annular drainage collectorwithin the vat extending inwardly from the side wall and adapted to catch the centrifugal discharge of the basket and prevent the same from falling into the vat, said drainage collector having a portion adapted to catch, the discharge of the basket through the independent drainage outlet in the bottom of the basket, said drainage collector provided with means whereby its contents may be discharged either into the vat or exteriorly thereof.
. 21. In a washing machine, a vat, a tub rotatably supported therein, said tub having an overhanging rim flange, a discharge aperture through the wall of the tub in proximity to said flange, a hood extending from the wall of the tub over said aperture.

tatably supported therein, said tub provided with a discharge aperture through the upper portion of its side wall, a hood extending from the wall of the tub over said aperture.

Ina washing machine, a vat, a tub rotatably supported within the vat, said tub having a discharge aperture in the upper por tion of its side wall, a hoodopen at one end extending from the wall of the tub over said aperture on the interior of the tub, a hood open at the bottom extending from the wall of the tub over said aperture on the exterior of the tub.
24. A washing machine having a vat provided with a drainage collector projecting inwardly from its side wall and extending circumferentially thereof, a tub provided with an upwardly outwardly flaring side wall perforated near its upper edge only, and
supported within the vat toextend above and.
below the drainage collector and to overhahg such collector so that the perforations of the tub are above the collector, said tub supported within the vat for rotatable oscillation or rapid continuous rotation, means for rotatably oscillating or continuously rotating the V tub, said drainage collector provided with an outlet whereby its contents may be discharged either into the vat or externally thereof.
25. A washing machine having a vat provided with a drainage collector projecting inwardly from the side wall of the vat and extending circumferentially thereof, atub rotatably supported within the vat to extend above and below said drainage collector, said tub provided with an outlet below the level of the drainage collector through which the,
contents of the tub may be discharged direct- -ly intothe vat and provided with a second outlet above said drainage collector through which the contents of the tub will be centrifugally discharged upon rotation of the'tub into said drainagecollect-or only.
