Description

G. ALMONT.
CLOTHES LINE SUPPORTER.
' N ,179,886 Patented Ju1y18 1876 NJHERS, FHOTO-UTNDGRAIHER. WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATEN OEEIcE.
GEORGE ALMONT, OF JERSEY CITY, NE'W'JE'BSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-LINE SUPPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,886, dated July 18, 1876; application filed I June 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ALMONT, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New J ersey, have invented a new and Improved Device for Hanging Clot-hes, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved device for hanging clothes; and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, partly in section, on line 00 m, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide for use in tenement-houses, and for drying purposes in general, a cheap and labor-saving device by which the clothes-line may be readily stretched and moved to hang up the clothes for drying, over the entire length of the line, and work the same in a simple and convenient manner.
The invention consists of an endless clothesline, that is passed over a grooved upright roller or pulley of a post, and then over a fixed roller and an adjustable stretchingroller below the same, that are applied to the window-frame or other support.
In the drawing, A represents an endless clothes-line, which is first passed over a roller or pulley, B, that is placed in an upright position on a suitable post, or to a shaft or a bracket attached to the same. This roller or pulley B is provided with guide-grooves a, in which the line moves, end flanges I) preventing the escape of the line from the pulley. The pulley B may be made tapering from the base to the top, and provided witha second groove and flanges to form a double roller, on which the clothes-line may be shifted, to keep the same tight. The clothes-line A is next wound in an opposite direction over a fixed horizontal roller, O, at a suitable distance from pulley B, and then passed over a second adjustable roller, D, below the former. Both rollers O and D turn in supporting-bearings of a frame, E, that is screwed to the windowcasing or other support. Y The lower roller D is adjustable on frame E, either by means of rack-teeth or fastening clamp-screws, or oth- The clothes travel with the line around the roller or pulley on the post, and may thus be hung over the entire line and be taken down in a ready and convenient manner. When the clothes-line is used on the roof or other dryingplace, it has the advantage that all the clothes may be hung from one point without necessitating the moving of the basket from place to place, employing thereby a device that admits the hanging and taking down of the clothes in a quicker and less fatiguing manner than the present devices.
Having thusdescribed my invention,-I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the Vertical roller B, stationary horizontal roller 0, and verticallyadjustable roller D with the endless rope A and-suitable supporting devices, substantially as specified.
GEORGE EMoN'r.
