IMPROVEMENT IN FEED-STEAMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179, S62, dated July 18, 187 application filed March 17, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. MOFFATT, of Montour, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented an Improved Feed-Steaming Apparatus, of which the following` `is a specification The object of my invention is to improve the construction and operation of a feedsteaming apparatus. It consists in the manner of forming and adapting a portable metal furnace and a wooden boiler having metal ends, to be combined and operated as hereinafter fully set forth.
My drawing is a sectional elevation, illustrating the construction and operation of my apparatus.
A represents the boiler. B is the furnace. a is the top plate of the boiler. a is the bot tom plate. They aremade of wood-preferably of two-inch plank-and joined to corresponding side plates in any suitable manner. They may vary in dimensions to form a boiler of any size desired. vb b are cast-metal end plates, to which the wooden top and bottom and side plates are tted. They correspond in size with the open ends of the wooden boiler, and have flanges to aid in producing steamtight joints. c c are rods passed through the end pieces, to draw and clamp and retain the metal plates b on the ends of the wooden boiler. d d represent hoops surrounding and binding the boiler. No. 1 represents a series of metal tubes, all in the same plane, passing longitudinally through the lower portion of the boiler. g is a chamber formed on the inside ot the rear end plate b, to which the two series of tubes are connected. It is a movable cover on the outside of the chamber g. J represents a boiler-feeder. mis an eduction-port, to which a ilexible tube, fn, is attached, to convey steam to the vessel containing the food to be-steamed. p is an escapevalve. r is the com-bustion-chamber of the furnace. It has openings leading` into and connecting` with the series of No. 1 tubes in the boiler. sis an auxiliary chamber on top of the chamber r. The boiler A may rest on the ground, and the furnace B be set in a pit; or the furnace may rest on the ground, and the boiler on feet, as indicated by broken lines. 4
The furnace is attached to the front end of the boiler by means ot' suitable catches, or in any way desired, so that they can be readily connected and disconnected, for convenience in moving about the apparatus.
In the practical operation of my invention water is put in the boiler and tire started in the furnace. The products of combustion will pass from the Eire-chamber r into and through the series of No. l tubes, to the chamber g at the rear end of the boiler, and from thence forward again through the N o. 2 series of tubes. The heat, as it thus passes backward and forward, is radiated by the tubes and heats the water, and produces steam in the boiler. The smoke escapes through vthe chamber s and pipe t.
The water in the boiler should cover the No. 1 series of tubes only, and then the heat radiated from the No. 2 series will superheat the steam generated by the No. 1 series.
A simple portable apparatus is thus provided, by, means ot' which vegetables, or any kind of food for animals,may be economically steamed and cooked, in any suitable vessel, by simply connecting the flexible eductiontube u with that vessel, or any number of vessels in succession.
By opening the door h of the chambery the No. 1 and No. 2 series of tubes may be readily cleaned.
I am aware that furnaces and boilers have been combined to form feed-Steamers, and that tubes have been used to conduct heat from the furnace, through the boiler, in reverse ways, to produce and superheat steam; but I claim that my manner of forming an independent portable furnace with two indeT pendent chambers, 1' and s, each chamber having independent rear openings, adapting the furnace to be connected with the front end of a boiler having two series of connected tubes, Nos. 1 and 2, open at their front ends7 is novel and advantageous.
