Description

v March 17, 1931. -w H GREET 1,796,927
BATTERY TERMI NAL FULLER Filed Nov. 29, 1929 m [/VVE/VTOR WE fireet I I I 0 ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 17, 1931 UNETED STATES WILLIAM H. GREECE, OF STARKVILLE, COLORADO BATTERY-TERMINAL FULLER Application filed'November 29, 1929.
This invention relates to tools commonly known as battery terminal pullers or lug removers.
Owing to the necessity of firmly and tight- 5 ly securing the cable lug or clamp to a storage battery terminal post to prevent excessive corrosion, it is usually very difficult to remove the lug from the post due to the lug becoming stuck to the post. Hammering is usually resorted to in order to loosen the lug, and this very frequently results in damage to the battery or lug.
It is an object of my invention to provide a lug remover which is adapted to grip the lug and withdraw the same from over the battery terminal post under the-influence of a plunger engaging the said post.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel lug remover which is operable by a pair of handles in a manner similar to the operation of tongs or pliers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool having a frame carrying a fixed jaw and having another jaw and a plunger pivotally operable in the frame to grip the lug and remove the same from the terminal Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my lug remover;
5 Fig. 2 is a fragmentary, vertical, sectional view taken on a plane just inside the frame;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in elevation, taken at right angles to the position in Fig. 1
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary, cross sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing, in which I have shown a frame 1 preferably formed of oppositely spaced plates 2 and 3, having curved ends 4. and 5 extending toward each other. Fixed to the frame by means of rivets 6 is a jaw 7 having a hooked end 8 for engaging the underside of a split cable lug or Serial No. 410,600.
clamp 9 adapted to be secured to a terminal post 10 of a storage battery 11 by means of the bolt 12. The jaw T is preferably held in the center of the frame by means of spacing blocks 13 and 14 positioned on each side of the jaw between the said constituting the frame.
Pivoted to the frame at 15 opposite the jaw 7 is another aw 16 suitably formed with a handle 17. Intermediate the jaws and extending downwardly between the frame plates is a plunger 18 which is preferably pivoted to the end of a handle 19, as at 20, the handle 19 being preferably pivoted at the same point as is the jaw 16. The jaw 16 is also formed with a hooked end 21 for engaging under the opposite side of the lug, and is preferably formed with an offset 22 for causing the same to extend downwardly exactly opposite to the jaw 7 The plunger 18 is also preferably ofi'set as at 23 to cause the plunger to be located centrally with respect to the frame to permit its being projected between the spaced curved ends 1 and 5 of the frame plates to engage the top terminal post 10.
Obviously, any other suitable means for centralizing the jaws and plunger between the frame plates might be employed, as, for example, by reducing the thickness of the handle members at the pivoting point 15 and bifurcating the top of the plunger 18 or reducing the thickness at the top portion where it engages the pivot 20.
The operation of my invention is obvious from the foregoing description and may be summarized briefly as follows:
The clamping bolt 12, extending through the cable lug, having been loosened, the jaws of my tool are hooked under the said lug, whereupon the handles 17 and 19 are squeezed together, causing the plunger to engage the top of the terminal post 10 and withdraw the lug from over the post.
While the specific details of construction have been herein shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit thereof as defined by the appended claims.
jaw and the plates Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A tool of the class described comprising a a frame, a jaw fixed thereto, another jaw pivoted in said frame, and a plunger intermediate the said aws and pivotally connected to said frame.
2. A tool of the class described comprising a frame, a pair of spaced jaws in said frame, one of said aws beingpivotal, a-plunger-intermediate said jaws, and a pivotal handle for said plunger, said handle and 'saidpiv-- otal jaw being pivoted to the said frame at a common point.
3. A tool of the class described comprising" a frame, said frame including a pair of spaced plates, a jaw fixed to said plates in-' termediate the same, an opposed jaw pivotally carried between said plates, a handle for said pivotal jaw, a plunger intermediate said jaws and plates, said plunger being adapted to be projected from between said plates, and a handle pivoted to said frame for actuating said plunger.
4:. A tool of the class described comprising a frame, means carried by said frame for gripping a battery cable lug, and means for raisin said lug from over a. terminal post, one 0 said gripping means and said last named means being pivoted to the said frame at a common point.
5. A tool of the class described comprising a pair of handles, a jaw for one of said handles, a plunger for the other of said handles, and a frame having another jaw fixed thereto, said frame and handles being pivotally connected at a common point.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WILLIAM H. GREET.
