IMPROVEMENT IN TOY ilSTOLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,526, dated July 4, 1876; application filed April :24, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARLOS B. OURTIss, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Spring-Guns; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip-.

scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure I is a longitudinal section of my toy gun. Figs. 2 and 3 show detached parts thereof.

A represents the barrel of the gun, formed with the frame 13 at the breech. Combined with the gun is a lever, 0, so arranged with the shape of the gun that it is not seen; but

the gun is as symmetrical with it as it is with-f out.

In the drawing. I show a hinged butt that acts as a lever, the hinge at :0 being the fulcrum. The lever, however,-may be made to lie down on the barrel, or on the under or upper side of the butt.

The object of this lever is to draw the spring back, and I am thereby enabled to use a more powerful spring, and, consequently,

' make a gun that will throw farther.

Through the barrel A is passed a rod, D, around which is the spring a, as shown. This rod is formed or provided with a collar or headpiece, b, against which the spring a operates, while the rear end of the rod is slotted or formed with flanges, into which the end of the lever 0 takes in drawing it back to set it for shooting. In the front end of the barrel is inserted a tube, E, with piston G working therein, said piston connected by a rod, d,-with the plunger or head I), thus making of the gun both a spring and air gun, shooting either a dart or a close wad. When used as an air-gun t e pistfiicompresses air in the tube, and the spring givesthe necessary force and suddenness to work it. Around the rod d, between the head or plunger 1) and the in ner end of the tube E, is placed a spring, h, to catch the blow of the mainspring 0t and form a cushion for the same, instead of having it strike rigidly. H is the trigger, constructed, as shown in Fig. 1, with a short arm, 2', projecting at its upper end into a slide,-m, held upward against the under side of the rod D by means of a spring, I, secured on the under side of the frame. As the rod D is drawn back by the lever O the plate. or slide m springs upward into a notch, n, in the under side of the rod, and holds the rod until the trigger is pulled, when the spring a throws the rod forward. J is the guard, attached to or formed in one piece with the spring I.

The frame or case of the gun is, of course, formed with suitable recesses or grooves for the various working parts to move in.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ise 1. In a toy gun, consisting of a stationary barrel provided with one or more springs, the

butt 0, hinged to the frame at the rear of thebarrel, and forming a lever for pulling back the spring, substantially as herein set forth.

2. The combination, with the stationary barrel and butt 0, hinged to the frame in rear of the said barrel, and forming a lever of the rod D, slotted or flanged at its rear end, as described, the head-piece b, and spring a, as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. The combination, with the barrel A, having rod D, spring a, operating-lever O, and head-piece b, of the secondary spring h, arranged in front of the head-piece for catching the blow of the mainspring and forming a cushion for the same, as set forth.

4. The tube E, with piston G and rod d, in combination with the barrel, spring a, and

rod 1) of a spring toy gun, for the purposes herein set forth.
