EXTENSION SYSTEM FOR CURTAIN RODS Filed Dec. 14. 1927 INVENTOR. I'M/1am C. Acrm Patented Feb. 24, 1931 y P T E WILLIAM o; KENNEY, or cennsromnnonn ISLAND, assienon 'ro KnnNnY MANU- rao runrne COMPANY, or onansron, anon ISLAND, A CORPORATION or nnonn ISLAND nx'rnnsron SYSTEM non cunrarn nons applicationufiled December 14, 1927,. Serial no. 233,909..
In my present invention Iain dealing with rod, rack orlilre hanging structures and related "devices in which a variable spacing is "desired for a reenter, whatever its use may be. i The curtain rod afiords a satisfactorybasis forhousehold enaniple or the variant problems or supporting hangers at desired distances from alwall or thelike.
The problem ,is a general one and has been variously dealt "with in various lines, but
taking the curtain rod as convenient e3:- arnple, we have n ordinary usage the problem ofspacingthe rod orbar at a desired distance rrorna face, wall, ledge or window.
In all drapery work, it is important to arrang 'ethedraperies to fit as closely as possible tofthewiiidow casing, but wherea window shade ishung on the face of the window casing or whereAust-rian shades'ar e used, it is QIiece'ssa-ry to project the draperies a varying distance froin the cas ng, depending upon the amount of clearance needed.-
say, the dealer need only carry a stock of rods of minimumfprojection and is still able to furnish any desired projection bymerely addinglextensionfpieces of the proper number.
Heretofore, the dealer has had to stock rods of various projection, in order to take care of thesevariations in projection, and thishas meant that thedealer has had difficulty in inaintaining the properbalance ofstock i the" various rod projections.
Moreover, single, double and triple rods may be arranged by the mere interchange of i brackets, that is to say, adouble rod may be made by the combination of two rods of standard projectionand a double bracket. Likewise, a triple rod may be madeby the combination of threerods of standard projection and a triple bracket. l 1
. My invention thus makes it possible for the dealer to furnisha variety of projections all from one standard projection, as Welles perinittingthe manuracturerto reduce manufacturing costs and stock by standardizingon one particular rod projection. a
I am aware that in the case of brackets for doublerods the spacing of the rodshas been effected byrnaking one of the integral arms or the braclretlonger than theother so as to offset the outer rod and I am aware that the exposed portion of this arm has been made to simulate the form of the curtain rod end with which it connects after theusual manner of ferrule connections. My present inven tion while carrying out the old ferrule idea does so by providing independent unitary entensionsfor the rod end as distinguished from the old offset bracket and while it, is an extension piece my concept makes it a unitary factor capable of inter-unit extension as desired for any kind ofa curtain rod assembly whether sin or plural, so that by the use or these units the spacing of the curtain rod or rods from the window may be madeas desired.
My present concept thus involves a new factor or integer suppleinontive of old standard equipment but converting the old by its own new powers of interessernbly into all of the several old stock styles and in addition some new ones.
My new factor is intact a section ol'ithe rod itself but made for inter-engagement with the rod end preferably so as to give apparent continuitytherewith. Such a device and its relation to the other old or standard parts will be shown in their several relations in the accompanying drawings. In these drawings: l
Fig. lis aside elevation of an old single bracket and the elbow of a curtain rod sup ported byit.
,F 2 shows the same assembly stepped up by my unit. a
Fig. 3 shows the same further useof two of my units. I l

offset by the Fig. 8 an inner face view of one of my units. I
Fig. 9 i-s'a similar view of a pair assembled, and
1 Fig. 10 a double space unit. v
I have taken as a basis'of illustration an ordinary curtain rod 1 having a bend or elbow 2 of fixed or given length. The bracket 3 is an ordinary s'iiiglebraeket"having an attachmg arm of ordinary length and adapted to receive the end of the elbow '2 of the rod 1.
For such standard parts I provide a unit or integer 4 which is preferablyin form a short, section of the same construction or contour as that of ,the rod 1. It is provided .an'end tongue 4 ;which maybe and preferably is of the same size, shape and construction as the tongue or arms .3 of the brackets 33, 13Qor23. It is therefore not only capableofheing assembled with the singale rod en'dlas in Fig. 2, but assembled as in Fig; 9 it constitutes a double rod end exten'- jsion fas'in Fig. 3. I i f In" Fig.7 I have shown a simple form of bracket for a three rod curtain fixture. It will be understood that the bracket '13 may substituted for the two brackets-3 shown in Figs. {Ior .5 or, for a three rod structure, the bracket 23 (Fig. 7) maybe substituted femur-6e single brackets. The form shown in Fig. 10 is simply a longer unit 14 which inay he used if 'desi-re'din'place of the double assembly shown in Fig. 9.
I o Itwill thus be seen that by my invention I ram. ableftofuse a standard curtain rod 1 of nniform length elbow 2 and with the bracket 3 or any of the oldmu'ltiple brackets 13hr 23 not only get any of the d-ouble'or thecurtain rod or rods so as to form extens'ie ns thereotlto'give the proper spacing. This permits the curtain to be run on to the rod'anddraped around the elbow as desired as distinguished from 1 the practice where the arm of the bracket is extended in'which case .the sides' of the curtainhave-to be run in over the bracket and after the rod is in I place.
The extensions'may bemade of any desired configuration butprfcterably of course-of the shape ofthe curtainrod itself of which it is to form an extension. Furthermore, various types of attaching means may be employed. although that indicated is a satisfactory structure afiordi ng considerable 1m; in the same planewith the bracket and the inner end of the rod elbow.
strength for the extensions. The friction ing devices maybe of any type. The tongue form as shown is merely illustrated as an 'old accepted type but any other form or type may be substituted. Other modifications and variants as above indicated may be resorted to and differences in design and finish may be employed and all without departing from the spirit of my invention as indicated in the claims. o
