p This invention relates to certain nbvel improvements in electric heating appliances and particularly relates to an improved unit construction and mounting therefor and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly eflicient in use and economical in manufacture.
The salient objectof my invention is to provide a construction for electric heating appliances which will be arranged in a manner such that the resistance unit therebf will be mounted in a device in such a way that it may be very expeditiously moved therefrom for inspection, repair or replacement.
Another object of the invention is to pro videa novel construction for enclosing the housing in which the heating unit is arranged and to provide this enclosure with a removable cap portion which will be constructed so that it may be very expeditiously removed when so required.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel construction which will embody means for holding the unit in position so as to prevent undesired movement thereof after the same has been installed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel construction for the unit which will be so constructed that the inherent rigidity thereof will be substantially increased.

The invention consists in the novel combination and. arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of construction for my invention I have shown my device as being applied to an electric iron but it is to be understood that other adaptations might be made Without departing from the purview of my invention. in the drawing 10 indicates the base portion of my iron which is preferably shaped in plan view similar to the shape of the element as illustrated in Fig. 6 and this base 10 is preferably formed from a relatively heavy metallic material. Extending above the base 10 in spaced relation I thereto is a c over 11 which embodies a downwardly bent portion that is secured to the as indicated by upper surface of the base 10 12 and this securing is preferably carried out by welding so as to provide a. rigid unit construction between the base 10 and the cover 11. The rear end of the cover ill is cut away to provide an opening.

It has been pointed out that the cover 11 is cut away at the rear end thereof so as to provide an opening and this opening is closed in the following manner. In the upper surface of the cover 11 adjacent the rear end W thereof is an upwardly bent portion 17a tally disposed foot portion 22 at the upper end thereof. On the cover plate 20 is a lever 24 that is pivotally connected thereto as indicated at 25, on which a handle 27 is provided. A loop portion 28 is provided in the portion 26 adjacent the handle 27 and a recess 29 is provided in'the upper surface of the lever 24 adjacent this loop portion 28 into which the lug 19 is intended to be extended fora purpose to be set forth. At the sides of the back plate 21 adjacentthe loweredge thegeof are inwardly extending portions 30 whichhave slots 31 provided therein which are arranged to define retention ears 32. Supported by the base 10 are horizontally extending pins 33. When the cover member 20 is arranged in position the retentionpins 33 are caused to pass through the slots 31 and are moved into position above the retention ears 32 and the lever 24 is moved to position the lug 19 in the recess 29 and, therefore, the cover 20 is retained in position.
Connected to the cover 11 adjacent the juncture of the lower end of the upwardly bent portion 17 is a bracket 34 which extends toward the back plate 21 but whieh ends in spaced relation therewith. The bracket 34 in- I cludes a downwardly bent portion 35 and a substantially hook shaped portion 36. A block of insulating material 37 is mounted on the portion 35 and is secured thereto by the bolt 26 or the like. A socket bolt 38 is extended through the block of insulation 37 and includes ahead 39 and a nut 40 is also mounted on the socket bolt 38. Extending through the head 39 into the bolt- 38 is a tapped. opening 41 into which apost 43 is screw threadedly extended. Two such constructions are provided as best illustrated in Fig. 3. On the outer end of the post 43 is the male portion 44 of a snap connector; the female portion 45 of which is arranged in one of the terminals of the electrical unit as will be set forth. Whenthe closure member 20 is arranged in position the male portions 44 enter thefemale portions 45 and in this man ner an electrical connection is established.
A substantially V -shaped bracket has the arm 46 thereof connected to the innensurface of the plate 21 adjacent the lower end thereof and the arm 47 fits into the groove portion 48 provided in the plate 15 at the end thereof opposite the taper 17 and in this manner this end of the plate 15 is retained in position.
Secured to the uppersurface of the plate 11 at pointsbest illustrated in Fig. 1 are brackets 49 and 50. As best illustrated in Fig. 9 a plurality of openings 51 are provided in the bracket 50 so as to provide a latticed construction therefor and the bracket 49 is similarly arranged. The lower ends of the brackets 49 and 50 are fixed to the cover 11 in any approved manner as by the rivets 52 and the upper ends thereof are suitably secured to the handle 53.
- Mounted on the bracket 50 is a block of insulating material 54 which has the posts 55 projecting therefrom which provide the male connections onto which a suitable female electrical connector may be secured which female electrical connector is in turn connected in the usual manner to a source of current supply. As best illustrated in Fig. 3 conductors 56 and 57 extend between the post 55 and the block of insulating material 54 and the bolts 38 and the block of insulating material 37 and the conductors 56 and 57 are retained on the bolts 38 by suitable nuts 58.
The unit is illustrated best in Figs. 6, 7, and 8 and comprises parallel metallic plates '59 and 60 which are shaped in plan view as best illustrated in Fig. 6 and which embody a recess 61. Sheets of insulating material 62 and 63 are arranged in abutment with the plates 59 and 60 and arranged intermediate the strips of insulating material 62 and 63 isthe winding of theresistance unit which is indicated by 64. The ends of the resistance unit 64 are connected to terminals 65 and 66 which extend upwardly substantially at right angles with respect to the element 16. These terminals are intended to be connected to the posts 43 by the female connectors 45 that are mounted at the outer ends of the terminals 65 and '66. Theplate 59 has upwardly extending lugs 67 and 68 provided'thereon which when the unit is properly installed in position extend into suitable sockets 69 (Fig. 1) in the plate 15 and thus the unit 16 is held against relative movement with respect to said plate 15.
In constructing my improved device the unit 16 is arranged so that the lugs 67 and 68'thereo'n will be projected into the sockets 69 in the plate 15. The plate 15 is then arranged in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 over the plate 10 with the taper 17 thereof abutting the dished portion 14. The terminals 65 and 66 are then connected to the posts 43, the conductors 56 and 57 having been pre-' viously connected to the bolts 38. The closure member is then mounted in position on the pins 33 and the lever 19 is disposed as described. The arms 47 extend into the re cess 48 and tend to force the taper 17 toward the dished portion 151 and-thus the plate 15 is effectively retained in position. The hook 7 portion 36 is also disposed above the plate 15 and thus aids in properlymaintaining this plate in position. It is apparent that if it becomes necessary to repair the element 16 or replacement thereof is desired for any purpose it is merely necessary to detach the closure member 20 and to disconnect the connectors 45 from the portions 14 which will permit the plate 15 to be slidout and a new element installed in the manner set forth.
By arranging the block of insulating material 54 which carries the connecting terminals at a point remote from the heated portions of the device a much more operative structure is provided since its connections are maintained in a relatively cool condition which increases the effectiveness of. the yield able connections since the resiliency of the spring portions decreases as the temperature rises.
While T have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

In a device of the class described, a body comprising a housing, said housing including a cover plate having an opening at one end thereof and embodying a relatively heavy lower wall, a dish-shaped portion in I weighted plate arranged oversaid lower wall, means for supporting terminals in said housing adjacent said opening, conductors connected to said terminals, an electrical heating element arranged intermediate said plate and said wall, means for connecting the terminals of said heating element to said firstnamed terminals, means for retaining said weighted plate in position over said lower wall with said heating element arranged intermediate said plate and said wall, and means on said closure member for engaging said weighted plate to force said weighted plate into engagement with said dish-shaped portion. f
