I will assume that signal S indicates proceed, as shown in the drawing, and that a vehicle moving toward the right passes. this signal. As the vehicle enters section AX it causes track relay T to open, thereby opening the circuit for signal winding 6, so that signal S moves to the stop position. The reversal of the position of contact 9 opens the circuit for relay D, so that the circuit for signal winding 7 becomes open at contact 16 of this relay. As the vehicle passes from section AX to section XB, no change will occur because the circuit for signal winding 6 will remain open at the contacts of track relay T As the vehicle passes outof block AB, the circuit for winding 6 of signal S will. become closed, and current of reverse polarity will be supplied to this circuit because relay D will be opened due to the vehicle entering the block next to the right. The energizing of relay C closesa circuit for the heating winding 19 of thermostat T. which circuit is from terminal B, through winding 19, contact 15 of relay C, and contacts 10 and 9 of signal S (both of which will be down) to terminal 0. After the lapse of a short time interval, contact 1718 of thermostat T will close, whereupon. winding 7 of signal S will become energized through a temporary circuit which passes from terminal B. through contact l.7'18 of thermostat T and signal winding 7 to terminal 0. Signal S will then move to the cau tion position, wherein contact 10 will be moved to its upper position. Relay D will then become energized through a circuit which passes from terminal B, through contact 10 in. the upper positionand contact 9 in the lowered position to terminal 0. The normal circuit for winding 7 will then be closed, through contact 16 of relay D As soon as signal S moves to'thecaution position, the circuit for the heating winding 19 of thermostat T will become open at contact 10, so that this winding will be de energized and the contact of the thermostat will again open. When the vehicle passes out of the block to the right of point B, relay D will become energized, so that current of-normal polarity will be supplied to winding 6 of signal S wit-h the result that this signal will move to the proceed position. Relay D will still be energized by virtue of a circuit which includes contact 9 in its upper position, so that the circuit for winding7 through contact 16 of this relay will remain closed. Because of its slow releasing characteristic, relay D will not open during the reversal of contacts 9 and 10.
I will now assume that while the vehicle is passing from section A-X to section XB, the contacts of track relay T close before the contacts of track relay T open, so that for a short interval of time the circuit for winding 6 of signal S is closed. If winding 7 were constantly energized, this momentary energization of winding 6 might cause a quick-acting signal, such as a searchlight signal, to give a momentary proceed or caution indication depending on whether relay 1) is energized or de-energized. With apparatus embodying my invention, however, this momentary proceed or caution indication is prevented, because the thermostat T prevents winding 7 from becoming energized during the short interval in which the contacts of both track relays T and T may be closed.
"When the vehicle passes point B, track relay T will close before relay D opens, be cause of the slow releasing characteristic of the latter relay, but signal S will not give a momentary proceed indication because thermostat T will delay the energization of signal winding 7 until after relay D has opened.
Referring now to Fig. 2, the apparatus shown in this view is the same as that shown in Fig. 1, except that the auxiliary relay C is connected in multiple with signal winding 6, and a back contact 20 of relay D is included in the branch circuit for relay G to de-energize this relay after signal S has been moved to the caution or proceed position. 7
Although I have herein shown and described only two forms of signaling systems embodying my invention, it is understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein within the scope of theappended claims without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination, two successivesections of railway track a track circuit including a track relay. for each section, a signal for said sections having two co-operating windings, a circuit for the first of said windings controlled by both of said track relays and including an auxiliary relay, a thermostat having a heating winding and a normally open contact, a circuit for said heating winding including a front contact of said auxiliary relay and contacts closed only when said signal indicates stop, a circuit for the second of said signal windings including the contact of said thermostat, a slow releasing relay having a circuit which includes a contact closed only when said signal gives a proceed indication, and an auxiliary circuit for said second signal winding including a front contact of said slow releasing relay.
