A torqey Patented Jan. vP7, 1931` UNIT CORNELIUS JAMES Maxaman', an., on 'BAiiinfonEeoN HOOK Fon cniLIii-e raivslaivn 'rrrnrrxn A Application Ved May e, 1 929. Serial No.y 330,496;
The present invention relates to devices for suspending an electric fan or similar ob- ]ects from the ceiling of a room and has for its principal Vobject to provide a. hook at-vk tachable to the outlet box of the house current by means of which the fan or other Y objects may be securely suspended.
ik further. object of the invention is to provide a` device'of this character which is simple and practical in construction, efficient and reliable in performance, which embod-v ies mea-ns for releasably attaching the hook in position tothe outlet box, which is strong facture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction, combination and arc rangement of the various elements vforming the invention as more fully hereinafter de-Y f scribed and claimed, referencebeing had to the `accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to likev Y parts throughout, and in which:
manner in which the hook is suspended therefrom,
Figure, 2 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially along a line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the outlet box and illustrating an extension for the hook for use upon relatively high ceilings,
Figure 4- is a transverse sectional view taken along a line 4 4: of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary elevational view of the tubular upper end of the hook showing the'opening for receiving the attaching @ya Figure 6 is a similar view of the lower end of the extension member, also provided with an opening for receiving the attaching key,
and Figure 7 isa taching key. Y
Referring now to the drawings in detail,
for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed the invention for use upon a Couven1 perspective view of the at- Y ture 12secured tothe underv si'de'of and compact, relatively inexpensive to nianulef the Outlet box,
fthe device upon relativelyT hi rfb Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view' through an outlet box and illustrating the 4 supporting the box `upon the ceiling structional type of outlet box indicated generallyl at 5 having a shoulder 6 at its lower edge. for
ture indicated by the horizontal line sho-wn at 7.'1' The bottom 'of the box isv provided" with an opening 8 through which the shank 9 of a hook member 10 is extended.' l Y a yThe hook is adaptedufor supporting *ay ceiling 'fano'r the like and has its upper end disposed within the outlet box and formed', into an internally threaded socket member 11Y for threaded engagement j'with 'the xthe top A retainingscrew 13 ris threaded through by to `prevent accidental displacement yof lthe hook therefrom.
f The' structure Vherein above described, lis
.intended for use particularly upon relatively lowceilingaas illustrated in Figuresr 1 and 2 of the drawings. When it is desired to applyA H- ceilings, ex-
-tension means is provided forithehook, as more clearlyillustrated in Figures to .7 in`` elusive, and comprises an externally threaded socket member 14 for threadedv engagement #with the fixture stud 12 and fromv which Ysocket member a shank 15", of square shaped formation in .Y cross.- 'selction depends. l The shank portion of theghook 10jis likewise constructed of-asquare shaped formation in cross section having a recess 17 formed therein extending vertically for receiving the lower end of the shank 15.
The shank 15 and the hollow shank 16 of the hook, are provided with openingsV 18 and 19 respectively adapted for registry with each other and extended entirely there- .through and suitable for receiving a key 20Y of sufficient length so that itsopposite ends protrude outwardly from the opposite side of the opening y v 'The upper edge of the key, at leach end, is formed with upstanding projections 21 adapted to engage the opposite side walls of they hollow shank 16 whereby to prevent accidental movement of the key from the opening.
Als more clearly illustrated in Figure 3 of 5, the socket 11V for engaging the stud 12'vvhere- .Y
the drawings, the opening 18 of the hollow shank and the' openings of the shank 15, are of suiicient size to permit the free insertion of the key, When said openings are in alined 5 position and the` Weight of the hook 10v`vi11 cause the upper edges of the opening to rest upon the nper'edjgeof the key inwardly of the projections 21 Whereby to `retain `lthe* parts in assembled relation. Y
It will be apparent, fromtheforegoing that the hook may b'eeas'ilyandjlikiy attached in position tothe fixture studs yand Will present sniicient strength to'saf'ely vsupport a ceilingfan or other objects thereupon.
l5 It is obviousthat my invention is susceptii'45 transverseiy'of said hook.
f'blete 'varius changes fand modifications in f construction without departing from the '"spiritofthe inventionorthe scope'df the apfpen'ded "claimand l accordingly claim all r 's'nch frms of the device to which am `en titled.
H avin'g thus' described lmy invention, What 'I claim' *as new is: v
