The principal object of theinvention is to provide means for relieving the ends of the roll and the chucks 'at'theends fromfstrain;
also to provide a simpletand inexpensive oohnection between'the two chucks 'w'ithinlthe center of the rollfor accomplishing theiabovementioned purpose.
. Other objects and advantages of "the in- I Vention will appear "hereinafter. I I Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. lis a side view of a'web. roll located din position on its centersyand Fig.. 2 is a sideviewof'the two centering chucks thereof with the connecting device constituting a part of this invention, shown in-position and partlyins ection.v
' This invention is for use 1th a supporting device such as a reel rotatable' about a shaft or 'othermeans for supporting the web roll. The supporting arms ll for a" single web roll 7 R are located-at opposite sides ofthe machine 25 and theyare provided with thejusual' steel spindles 12. fixed'to the support on one side by a split collar andhavingacenter 14 c for receiving the roll at that end.,' At the 7 other end the arm llof the supportis' shown ion 19 meshes. This pinion isona shaft 20 on a bracket 21 and has handle 22 fixedto I as provided with a 'rack18 with which a'pin v v the shaft for operating it to move the spindle back and forthpallas-shown inc-my abo mentioned patent,f
" For supporting the roll R, the centers 14 1 providea pair of cylindrical chucks 25 whichare silnilarto the chuckswdescribed in the abovementionedvpatentand have a cir cular -fiat flangeaftr one end. 1 Their shank-s" are cut down at the end toprovide'a square; shoulder 26' and a cylindricalprojectingend '27.. Theseends27 fit into the opposite ends;
of a brass or other metal pipe ortube 28 which is of suchleng'thas to fitup against'the two i'sho ulders 26 at its opposite ends. The ends o V 27 are made to fit in the'ends of the piperather I closely. The pipe 28 strengthens the chucks and keeps'them from having ahylateralmw; v, o, o .9 A anchor to the other to prevent'the other from v a tio'n. In other words, each chuck acts asan;
swinging'out of the center. {This connection 'across is very simple as it requires no special 4 V features on the pipe and merely theturn'ing' I down'of the ends of the chucks to form the 'cylindricalprojections entering the pipe and 1 The chucks themselvesina-y ibe of I solid-pieces of metal or wood and they are Q p'laced in'theends'of the spools ofthe rollsR 6o withithe endsof the pipe engaging the proif jections 27. The pipe 28 and thechucks 25 have the; same outside diameter and, that fits I tightly in the spoolon the roll which is placed" 1 thereon by introducing the three this invention from the ends.
elements of It willkbe noticed that these shanks of consider'ablelength, as in my above i a 1 patent5 but; that the firmness'with whichth "e- ;I*i l V additional tube. Therefore the strairii'on the chucks atjt'he end ofthe roll'is greatly" rew rollis supported isgreatly increased by this onlyi'a singlev form of thei'in'vention I ;.am aware offthe, factthat modifications .can cbe'. i made therein by any person skilled in the art" 7 without departing from the scopeof the in;
