Description

M. L. DODGE Dec. 30, 21930.
DOOR CHECK Filed Jan. 27, 1926 ll IlL Patented Dec. 30, 1930 UNHTED sr ()FFICE MERTON I. DODGE, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON DOORCHECK Application filed January 27, 1926. Serial No. 84,035.
- This invention relates to improvements in side, is a door check embodied by this invendoor checks and more particularly to devices tion and which may be used to retain the of that character adapted to be fixed to a door door in open position. The device comprises to hold it in open position; it being the prina casting 2 provided at opposite sides with cipal object of the invention to provide a delaterally projecting ears 3, adapted to receive 55 Vice suitable for use on garage, barn or facscrews or bolts 4 therethrough to secure it to tory doors and which comprises a pivotally the door, and having two'spaced apart, forlnounted sprag that may be moved between wardly projecting flanges 5 and 6 between functional and non-functional positions by which a sprag 7 is-pivotally mounted on a the action of foot pedals which makes it unpivot pin'S extended through the said flanges,
necessary for one to stoop, or to use the hands, so that it may swing in a vertical plane perin setting or releasing the sprag. pendicular to the door.
It is also an object of the invention to pro- For use on garage, barn or factory doors, vide a door check as above stated which may the end of the sprag would preferably be be used satisfactorily on doors of residences pointed so that it would hold to the best ador offices as a means of retaining them in open vantage when engaged with a cement or position and which will not mar or damage wooden floor, but when the device is provided the floor. on oflice or residence doors, it preferably Other objects reside in the details of 0011- would be equipped at the end with a'rubber palr of foot pedals; one of which, when so as to avoid marring or damaging the floor.

These plates lie in planes Figure 3 is a front view of the device. that are parallel with the vertical plane Figure 4 is a cross section taken on line throughwhich the sprag swings and each has H in Figure 2. a longitudinal slot 16 in its body portion.
49 Figure 5 is a detail of an alternative con- Cast integral with or otherwise fixed to struction with the sprag equipped with a the opposite side faces o-fthe pivoted end of rubber knob at the end. the sprag 7 are gears'17 and 18 which are Figure 6 is a perspective view of an alterdisposed respectively within the slotted pornative construction. tions 16 of plates 12 and 13. The slot in plate Referring more in detail to the drawings 12 is provided along its forward edge with 1 designates a door such as that used on gear teeth 19 which operate in mesh with the a garage, or in a residence and which would teeth of gear 17 and along the rearward edge be hinged at one vertical edge to swing beof the slot in'plate 13 are gear teeth 20 which tween open and closed positions. Attached mesh with the teethof gear 18. The plates to to the swinging edge of the door, on the inare so connected with the sprag that when struction whereby the sprag is actuated by a or fibre knob, as'indicated at 9 in Figure .5, 70 V the sprag is in functional position, as in Figure 1, the plate 13 is in elevated position and plate 12 is in lowered position. When the sprag is raised, the relation of the plates is reversed.
Assuming that the device is so constructed and attached to the door, and that the sprag is in non-functional position, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, to use the device to hold the door in open position, the plate 12 is pressed downwardly bypressure on pedal 14 which, through gear 17 swings the sprag to downwardly extended position so that its pointed end rests in holding contact with the floor. During this movement of the sprag the plate-1'3 is raised. Then, when it is desired to raise the sprag to release the door, the plate 13 is moved downwardly by pressure on foot pedal 15 and through gear 18 it is swung upwardly against the door where it remains due tovthe fact that its own weight is within the vertical plane of the pivot pin.
In Figure 6, I have illustrated an alternative construction in which the rack plate 12 and its geared connection with the spring is eliminated and the sprag is adapted to be lifted by downward pressure on the pedal portion of plate 13 and is provided near its pivotal point with an outwardly projecting arm'25 that may be pushed downwardly to cause the sprag to swing outwardly and downwardly to functional position.
{Such devices may be made in various sizes, suitable for various uses and may be provided with or without the protective ball on the end of the sprag.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is: r
1. A door check comprising a mounting having means for attachment to a door and for receiving said gears; the slot of one of said plates having teeth along one edge in mesh with the gear at that side of the sprag and the slot of the other plate having teeth along its opposite edge in mesh with the other gear; said plates having laterally turned pedals at their upper ends whereby the plates may be actuated downwardly to swing the sprag between functional and non-functional positions.
- 3. A door check comprising a mounting adapted for attachment to a door, a sprag pivotally fixed to the mounting to swing into and from holding contact with a floor and a pair of setting devices each having operative connection with the sprag and extending from the mounting, one of said. devices being operable inwardl for setting the sprag, the other being opera le inwardly for releasing the sprag and each of said devices being re-set by the inward actuation of the other and through its connection with the sprag.
Signed at Seattle, King County, Washington, this 21st day of October, 1925.
MERTON L. DODGE.
