Description

R. D. WELLS Dec. l, 193.0,
GAS RANGE Filed Feb. 28, 1927 'Patented uw. 16,1930
UNITED sTATEs nussnu. n.' wm, or romsrown, Pmmsynvanu GAB RANGE Application nled February 28, 1927. Serial No. 171,426.
One object oi my invention is to devise a` novel construction of a gas range, and more particularly to devise novel means for providing the doors with a fixed pivot instead of the customary offset pivot, or movable pivot.
` YAnother object of my invention is to devise novel means to counterbalance the doors so that they will stay in any position to which the have been moved.
ith the above and other` objects in view as will more clearly hereinafter appear, my
invention comprehends a novel construction of a gas range and more particularly novel means for hinging the doors so that they will have fixed pivots.
My invention further comprehends a novel construction and arrangement of door counterbalancing mechanism. g
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter more clearly appear. 1
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings a typical embodiment of it, which, in
practice, will give satisfactory and reliable results. It is however, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and my invention is not limited to the exact arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities, as herein set forth.
Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of a gas range embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a to plan view of the rear end of a door in detac ed position.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail of a pivot pin. Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates a gas range embodying my invention. The gas range, in' so far as the supporting frame-work, the arrangement of thev urners, oven, and compartments is concerned, may be of any desired or conventional type. .The stove is provided in the usual manner with the front standards 2 andthe front panel 3 having a door opening 4. The ortion of the panel 3 which surrounds the oor opening 4 is deflected inwardly and laterally as at 5to form a seat for the door 6. The door 6 has extending rearwardly from it the arms 7 which are disposed at an angle to the plane of the door and are provided with an offset contact lug 8 which, when the door is opened to a horizontal position, will contact with the rear face of the panel 3 so thatthe door cannot be opened beyond its fully opened horizontal position, at which time it is preferably substantially flush with the bottom of the oven, as'will be clear from Figure 3.
The door 6 is pivotally supported in a novel manner so that it will have fixed pivots instead of the customary offset pivots which latter have been deemed essential to provide for the outward movement of the bottom of the door when the door is opened.
9 designates L shaped pivot pins which pass through the arms 7 and are received in the apertures 10 formed in bosses 11, which are connected to or integral with the juxtaposed front standards 2. The rear marginal portion of the door is provided with recesses 12 near-opposite sides of the door into which the pivot pins can be turned and the deliected portions of these pivot pins are disposed between the lining 13 and the door so that the door lining serves as a means to retain the ivot pins 9 in their assembled position. The ining is secured to the door by means of fastening devices 14.
The front panel 3 is provided with the openings 15 through which the arms 7 extend and these openings are covered by the door when the latter is in closed position. It will be seen that the location of the pivots and their arrangement is such that the door swings on fixed pivots instead of offset pivots, andwhen in closed position completely covers the door opening 4. The door lining 13 is spaced from the door proper by means of the lugs 16.
In order to counterbalance the door, one of the arms 7 is provided with a hook 17 to which is connected a chain 18, the chain passing downwardly around a pulley 19 which is carried by a bracket 20, secured to a. standard 2. The chain then passes rearwardly and is connected with one end 'of a spring 21. The opposite end of this spring 21 is connected to a threaded e e bolt 22 which passes through the rear stan ard 23 and is provided with a nut 24 which enables one to vary the tension of the spring 21. It will thus be apparent that the door` -6 is counterbalanced in such a manner that it will be retained in any position to which it is opened. l
The door` 6 is provided at its rear ends with the webs 15, at the opposite sides at the rear, the upper faces of said Webs forming curved faces so that when the door 6 vis in its opened position the Webs 25 will substantially fili the openings 15 in the front panel. These Webs, or plates 25 may be integral with the sides of the door or connected thereto in any desired manner.
While i have illustrated and described the means for pivoting the oven door in position and counterbalancing it, it will be understood that the same construction is ernployed for the door which controls access to the oven burner, and for other doors with which the gas range is provided.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A gas range having standards and a front Wall provided with a, door opening, a door to close said opening and having rearwardly extending arms, pivot pins passing through said arms and journalled on said standards and having deflected portions, said door having means to limit longitudinal movement in one direction of said pins and a lining for the door overhanging said de- Hected portions to retain said pivot pins in assembled position.
2. A gas range having standards and a front Wall provided with a door opening, and with side openings adjacent opposite sides of said door opening, Webs on the sides of said door at its rear end to pass through and sub' stantialy fill said side openings, arms connected with the rear end of said door at the' sides, and pivot pins for said door and carrie 1i1 by said standards in rear of said front Wa 3. A gas range having standards and a front panel provided with a door opening, a door to close said opening and having rearwardly extending arms, said anel surrounding said door opening and eing inwardly and laterally deflected to form a seat for the door and provided with side openings through which said arms extend,l and pivot pins passingthrough said arms and jonrnalled on said standards.
