THRESHOLD WEATHER STRIP Filed July 51. 1929 5 v i y .i atented Dec. 16 930 V wI L IAMnn ILnY,qrL MPrA, wnsn1NemoN V Application filed July 31;,
I am aware that various types of threshold 7 Weatherstrips have been used at the bottom of doors held in closed position'b'y springs, etc., but I am not aware'that it'isiold to place i a eatherstrip in a vertical groove in the bottom edge of a door and secure the strip in such groove so thatit is freeto moveiverti cally therein and provide meansfor'holding the strip in the groove when the door'is open so that when the door is open the end of the" strip beyond its support and toward the free side of the door may drop by gravity below the plane of the threshold, whereby tllGzPOiIli]: of contact between the threshold and strip at the beginningof the closing of the door is of comparativelysmall area, which area increases until the door isfully closed, whereby the strip is the more easily moved .to op erative position without undue friction, and 9 when the door is fully closed the strip'loy gravityi moves to .jsealingrelation to the threshold. p

Figure 2 is a detailfront elevation show ing the door partially open. V Figure 3 is a, transverse sectionalfview through the bottom ofthe door and the'door frame, the lines;
the strip mounted therein.
The reference numeral 1 designates a :door
, framehaving a threshold2, said frameha ving a hinged door 3. r i Q g The bottom edge of the door is provided with an elongated groove 4: extending the full width-of the door and of equaldepthand width throughout its length. A weatheror sealing strip 5 is mounted insaid groove 4 and is of such dimensions that whileit will freely move vertically in said groove it will not bind therein. This strip'is provided: with an elongated slot dwhichextends substantially above the longitudinal axis of the strip and is positioned between the centerofthe strip A 9 and that end of the strip located at the hinge f i door being shown openinfdottedi Figure 4 is a vertical sectional View through 1 the bottom of the door showingthe slot and Figure 5 is a perspective viewof the strip.

side of the door,' whereby one end of the'strip; 'isheavier than the other whenithe strip'is suspended in the groove 4 on the pin 7.. The 7 pin 6 is secured'near the'bottom ofthe door and passes transversely through the groove dot the door and slot 6 of the stripf5. v The pin 7 functions as 'a fulcrum' and as a guide for theweatherstripflf), and the location of the pin between the center and hinge side of the-door issuchas to causethe inner or 0 hinge endof the strip to moveupward in the groove 4, and the outer :end of the strip to move downward in the groove when the door is opened and swung clearof the threshold. 1
This tilting of the strip results in; reducing the areaof contact'"between the strip and y thresh'oldwhen' the door is moved to closed position thereby'reducing frictionand grad-- I I 'ually'moving the strip upward into operative positioniin'thegroove4, and when the door oves to is fully closed the strip byjgravity 'sealingrelation with the threshold.
. In some' instances thedropping of the I weatherstripg5 by gravity when, the door is opened'might produce a noise incident to'the end ofthe strip at the hinged sideof the door striking the topofthe'ygroove4,i'and in order:
to overcome this I insert a comparatively short "piece of rubber 8 at the; top of the groove atthe hinge side of the door.
' \Vhatl claim is:
The combination with a door; having an elongated groove in. its bottom edge, a pin 1 extending transversely through said groove andpositioned substantially midway between Y the hinged side of the'door' and the. middle thereof; anelongated- Weatherstrip bodiflyf movably: mounted'in said groove and free to move bodily downward-bygravity and provided with an elongated slotiextending ver-r tically above the lon 'itudinal axis of the strip, V
andadapted to' receive said pin, whereby the strip is free tomove vertically in said. groove and adapt itself toithe threshold of the door tofor-rna tight joint therewith, and a cushion in theltopof the groove at, the hinge side of thedoorr 5 i .In testimony whereof aflfizrmy signature.
