UNITED STATES JOSEPH WOZNIAK AND ERNEST G. IBREMFORZDEB, 013 DETROIT, MICHIGAN DISPLAY nnvion Application filed January 14, 1929. Serial No. 332,318.
This invention relates to a display device in the form of a container with transparent walls, particularly intended to contain such commodities as potato chips or other loose material, which may be withdrawn therefrom and sold in bags or other packages.
The general object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature, in which the commodities may be displayed in an. effective manner and which is conveniently arranged to facilitate the removal and sale of a portion of its contents in small packages and in the most economical manner.
The specific construction of the invention, together with the advantages resulting therefrom, will be more particularly explained in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
The container to which the invention relates comprises a rear wall 5 and a bottom 6, to which corner strips 7 are suitably secured. These parts may conveniently be made from sheet metal and the corner strips are formed to receive front and side walls 8, which are preferably made of sheet glass. The container also has a removable top 9, to which may be secured an upstanding panel 10 adapted to bear a suitable inscription relating to the contents of the container. A pocket 11, which may be of skeleton formation, is secured to the rear wall 5 for containing paper bags in which the contents of the container is put up for sale.
The rear wall 5 terminates some distance above the bottom 6 to provide an outlet from which-the contents of the container may be removed for sale. The lower end of the wall 5 is also formed with an inwardly and down wardly inclined baffle 12 which retards the movement of the contents and prevents it from piling up at the outlet.
The bottom 6 is extended rearwardly as shown at 13 and the edges of this extended portion are connected to the side walls by triangular strips 14 to form a spout from which the potato chips or other commodity may be scooped.
The bottom is formed with upturned flanges, which extend rearwardly beyond the sides 1 1, as shown at 15, these extended portions 15 being connected by a rod16 constituting a pivot for a door 17. This door, when closed, rests at its upper edge against a strip 18 extending across the upper edge of the opening and the side edges of the door are formed with flanges 19 which overlie 5 the edges of the strips 14. The free edge of the door may be turned outwardly as at 20 to constitute a handle. The door is also formed with knobs 21, which, when the door is opened, engage the outer portion of the 5,
extension 13, thus limiting the position of the door to a horizontal plane which is substantially a continuation of the plane of the bottom 6. When the door is thus opened, therefore, it constitutes a shelf on which a paperbag may rest while itis being filled.
While we have shown and described in considerable detail the present preferred embodiment of the invention, it is, of course, apparent that the same may be considerably modified without departing materially from the essential features thereof, as defined in the claim.
What we claim is:
A display receptacle, comprising upright walls, a top and a bottom, one of said upright walls terminating at a distance above the bottom to provide an outlet, the bottom being extended outwardly beyond the plane of said last mentioned wall, the two sides adjacent said outlet having triangular extensions joining the bottom extension to constitute a spout substantially co-extensive in width with the receptacle; the bottom extension being provided with marginal side flanges overlapping the lower edges of the side walls and of the triangular extensions and extending outwardly beyond the latter, a hinge rod connecting the extending portions of said flanges, and a door hinged on said rod and adapted to close against the upper edges of said triangular extensions, the bottom being extended outwardly far enough to provide an abutment to limit the opening of the door to a horizontal position.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto signed our names to this specification.
JOSEPH WVOZNIAK. ERNEST G. BREMFORDER.
