Description

Dec. 9, 1930. M BERRY 1,784,217
lEIJECTELT'J 'HIRE CASNG Filed Dec. 31, 1923 gnocwtoz 'James v50/)yf Patented ii 9, E93@ PATENT OFFICE JAMES M. BERRY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN ELECTRIC WIRE CASING Application led December 31, 1923. Serial No. 683,667.
The invention relates to electric wiring structures and has for one of its objects the provision of a casing for an electric wlre which may be readily applied and safely handled and which can be manufactured at relativelylow cost. Another object is the provision of a pliable casing enclosing a pliable electric wire and forming a unit therewith. Further objects of the invention reside in the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of .an l5 electric wiring structure embodying my 1nvention; `Figure 2 is a transverse section" therethrough;
j Figure 3 is a plan view of a portion of the casing blank before the forming operations have been completed;
Figure 4i is a yplan view of a modified construction;
Figure 5 is a transverse section therethrough; A
Figure 6 is a plan View of another modified construction 1 is a pliable strip formed of metal and having at its sides the beads 2 containing the pliable insulated electric wires 3. To provide for the pliability of the strip the beads 2 each comprise the series of return-bent tongues 4 which are formed by transversely slitting the edges of the blank and then turn- .1 ing over the portions or tongues between the slits. The widths of the tongues are such that the complete strip may be readily curved or bent to the desired form. The ortion of the strip intermediate the beads 2 1s preferably formed with the longitudinally extending'series of holes 5 through which suitable securing means, such as screws or nails, may be passed for fastening the strip to the wall, ceiling or other. desired support.
This unit including the metallic'strip and the electric wires may be manufactured at a relatively low cost owing to the fact that it4 may be formed in an automatic machine which will transversely slit the edges of the strip and punch the longitudinally extending .is not pliable longitudinally thereof.
series of holes therein as well as return-bend the tongues around the electric wires, the unit upon leaving the machine being complete and ready for use. Furthermore, this unit being pliable may be of indeterminate length and wound upon reels.
In the modified construction shown in Figures 4 and 5, the strip 6, which is preferably formed of metal, is provided with the beads 7 at its edges and the bead 8 extending Aim longitudinally thereof and near its middle, these beads being integral with the flat portions 9 of the strip intermediate the beads and being adapted to receive electric wires 10. The flat portions of the strip are provided with thelongitudinally extending series of holes 11 through which the securing means may extend. This construction may also be formed in an automatic machine but 7 It is apparent that the number of beads of either casing may be readily changed to take care ofthe desired number of electric wires.
As shown in the modified construction in Figure 6, posite edges transversely slit at13 to form tongues 14. These transverse slits are staggered and as a consequence when the tongues are return bent into overlapping relation the outer tongues extend over the slits formed between thel inner tongues. 15 is a pair of insulated electric wires which are enclosed Within the overlapping return-bent tongues, the arrangement being such that the casing forms a unit with the wires and being pliable may be wound upon reels. It will be seen that this unit may be made in an auto` matic machine and may be of indeterminate length.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a simple form of casing for an electric wire which may be manufactured at relatively low cost and can'be easily secured to a support. Furthermore, the casing is adapted to be used as a lath 'and may be plastered over. It will also be seen that the casing and electric wire may form a unit whereby both may be secured to the support with the one operation. Also that the unit may be curved or twisted to pass 1 12 is a metallic strip having its op- 75 around obstructions or be secured to support members extending at an angle to each other.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In an electric Wire structure, a casing for pliable electric wires, said casing including a strip of material of a readily pliable character and having its opposite longitudinally extending edges transversely slit nto form longitudinally extending series of tongues for increasing the flexible or pliable character of the casing, each series of tongues adapted to be return-bent to completely enclose an electric Wire. Y
2. In an electric wiring structure, a pliable strip having a substantially flat body 'portion provided along a longitudinal edge thereof With a tubular bead constituting a casing vfor receiving and completely enclosing an electric Wire, said bead being transversely slit at a plurality of spaced points for increasing the flexibility thereof.
3. In an electric Wiring structure, a pliable strip havin a substantially flat body portion provi ed along a longitudinal edge thereof with a tubular bead for receiving an electric wire, said bead being formed of a series of substantially parallel transversely extending return bent tongues for imparting iexibility to said bead.
v 4. In an electric wiring structure, a pliable strip having a securing portion provided Valong a longitudinal edge thereof with a tubular bead for receiving an electric wire, said bead being formed of a series of substantially parallel transversely extending return-bent tongues for imparting flexibility to said bead. 4
5. In an electric Wiring structure, a pliable strip having a securing portion provided With a tubular bead for receiving an electric Wire, said bead being adapted to entirely enclose the Wire and being formed of a series of substantiallyl parallel transversely extending return-bent tongues for imparting flexibility to said bead.
In testimony whereof I affix m signature.
` JAMES M. ERRY.
