i This invention relates to improvements in stone Spreaders, and more particularly to an attachment for trucks to be used in the spreading of crushed stone, gravel and like materials on roads in the course of construction or in the resurfacing or repairing thereof.
Theobjectof the invention'is to provide a spreadingdevice to bemounted at the rear of a. truck for the purpose of spreading "namely, of dumping the materials along the road and then spreading it by hand.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the attachment showing its position on a truck body, FigureQ is a view of the spreading attachment in rear elevation, that is, from behind the truck,
Figure .3 is a View in front elevation of the Spreader as taken on section line 33 of Figure 4 is a view in end elevation of the spreader, and r I Figure 5 is a view in vertical section through the spreader as taken on line 44= of Figure 3, with the truck body tilted into dumping or spreading position as shown in dotted lines.
As suggested from the foregoing discussion, the spreading device is essentially an attachment to be mounted upon the rear end of a truck body A, preferably of the selfdumping type in which the front end. is elevated to discharge the contents by gravity fromthe rear end.
The spreading device comprises in general, a box-like receptacle of sheet metal, so mounted on to the truck body as to project beyond the rear and sides thereof and having an adjustable opening extending the width thereof through which the material is discharged.
The spreader is constructed of sheet metal, shaped to form the walls, and reinforced by structural steel members where required.
Consideringthe front of the spreader as that portion adjacent the truck, it will be observed that is encloses the rear portion of the-truck body, so that it has in reality no front -walls except two wall portions or wings 1, 1 extending laterally from the side walls of the truck body, the length of the spreader being somewhat greater than the width of the body and projects beyond the same at both ends. End walls 2, 2 extend rearwardly from the front wall portions 1, 1 and unite with rear and hot-tom walls 3 and 4:, all of the same being preferably formed from a single piece of sheet metal and bent into shape. The top edges of the side walls 2, 2 slope downwardly toward the rear, so that the spreader is rather more shallow at its rear portion than at its forward portion. The top of the spreader is open, except at the ends where top wall sections 5, 5 are carried inwardly from the end walls and thence tapering off in points 5a, 5a along the top edge of the rear wall 3, the latter preferably having a rectangular section removed between the inner ends of the top wall sections to form a central portion 3a of reduced height. The rear wall is strengthened by an angle bar 6 extending horizontally above the lower edge and rivet-- ed to the outer face thereof, its ends being bent around the corners and riveted to the is an angle bar 8, with one web riveted flatwise against the bottom of the plate and the other projecting downwardly in line with the edge thereof. The ends of the angle bar elongated slots110 b',.10b forine'dtherein and through which. the. bolts 9, 9 extend, the
heads of said bolts bearing against thewebsl I It is manifest that by adjusting the bolts- 9, 9 the hinged bottom wall section or plate 41) can be raised or lowered, thus providing a slot or discharge opening of desired width between the outer edge of the plate and the bottom edge of the rear wall 3.
As a preferable means of" attaching the spreader tothe truckwbody the following means are, used: For the purpose of illustration it is assumed that the truck body A of the elevating dump type as already suggested, consists of an open box of steel construction, having. a swinging gate B' at its rear 'end hinged at b, b to swing outwardly along its upper It may also-be assumedthat the structure of the body also includesa pair of angle bars C, C, spaced a shortcdistance forwardly of the rear end thereof and extending vertically on each side of thebody, and a, third bar D extending crosswise underneath thebody between the lower ends of the bars C, C. As so located these barsprovide a continuous flange extending at right angles from the three sidesof the body.- It is to these fiangesthat the spreader is bolted In the first place, the inner vertical edge of the front wall portions or wings 1, 1 of the spreader abut against the flanges of the upright body angle members C, C. Bolt holes are drilled through the vertical inner edges of the wall portions 1, 1, and bolts la inserted through these holes and registering holes in the flanges of the body bars C, C. For securing the spreader underneath the truck body an angle bar 11 is riveted along the front edge of the bottom wall 4: so as to provide an. upwardly projecting web or flange in which are drilled a plurality of bolt holes, In applying the spreader the vertical flange of the angle iron 11 abuts against a corresponding flange of the under body bar D and bolts 11a are inserted through holes in these flanges.
The manner in which the spreader operates is obvious: 'Having' been attached to the rear of a-vehicle, the opening along its bottom rear edge is adjusted to the proper Width,
depending upon the grade of materialused 1 and the thickness of the layer to be spread.
Thetruck with. its load of material is then driven tot-he point where the spreading is to begin, and the body elevated or tilted so that flow into the spreader as soon as the gate B of the body is released, the weight of the material forcing the gate open and to stand in open position while the material flows into the spreader and thence inza stream of uniform thickness from the discharge slot of the spreader. The volume discharged from the spreader will manifestly be governed by the speed'of travel'of the truck aswell as on the "angle to which the body isfltilted into dumping position; Ordinarily a relatively slow constant speed is maintained during the discharging of each load of material on the roadway. and the elevation or tilt of the body increased as the load diminishes. Thus at the-start with a full load the body need only as the rearend of the' truck becomesempty the body is tilted more and more so that the material at thefront end of the truck will be carried towardithe rear until the load is discharged.
By the use of the spreading attachment it is obvious that all unnecessary handling of entire the material'is eliminated, since the unload-.
ing and spreading operations are combined in-a single operation in which gravity and motive power replace the slow and tedious manual labor of spreading the material. by
hand shovels. I 1 Having disclosed apreferred embodiment oftheinvention, we claim: 3
