HAND PUMP SPRAYER Filed Sept. l0, 1928 INVENTOR ATTO R NEY BY mfww Patented Dec. 2, 193) 1 l 'lhisiyinventionfl relates to fspr'ayingf del vices offthe type adapted to' be -secured upon the? back of the? operator; for conveniently Vspraying!trees@plantsgfetc:
forced from atankfunder pressure supplied byaY hand'fpumpg and? in ord'ei-to buildup pressure the tank must befremo'ved-rom its posit-i'dnon the black and? 'after sui'iicient preslsure hasbeen built-up it maybe replaced.V
' This requires considerable time and effort, and the primary object of the present inven- Y tion is to overcome these and other disadvantages by providing means for buildingl 15: up and maintaining sufficient pressure within the tank while the latter is in position on the back of the operator and without stop-` ping the operation of spraying.
Another objecty ofv theinvention is .the
' u2!! provision of novel means lfor securing the Y pressure tank within the liquid containing tank,V togetherwith a pump ofnovel lconstruction which .combines to make up v a sprayer of simple and-economical construction and use. t y l With the above and otherobjects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter morefully described;V
illustrated' in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim. In the drawingpv I Figure l is a view partly in section and tion. v
Figure 2 is aplan` view of the cover plate provided with a saddle 11 which engages Y the back and with straps 12. ' communicates with the pump cylinder 34, a
valve 47 controlling this passage. A passage 48 provides communication between the interior of nipple 44 and the pressure cylinder 18, the lower end of' the passage 48 being provided with a check vvalve 49 which controls a port V50. A port 51 at the upperend of the passage 48 provides communication between this passage and the pressure cylinder or pressure chamber 36. Y
The outer end of the operating lever 41 has pivotally secured thereto one end of a rod 52 and the lower end of this rod is provided with a hand grip 53.
The apparatus isA positioned upon the back of the operator as previously explained, the operating lever 40 extending forwardly over the left shoulder While the rod 52 extends downward in lfront of the operator with the grip 53 in'convenientposition to be grasped by the operators left hand. By manipulating the lever 41, the pump plunger 38 is reciprocated and uponits upward stroke liquid from theY tank 10 is drawn inward past the valve 47 through the passage 44 into the pumprcylinder. 4During this movement of the plunger 38, the valve 49 will remain seated. Upon reverse or downward move' ment of the plunger 38, the valve 47 will be closed and the'liquid which has previously been drawn into the pump cylinder will be forced outward through the passage 44 past the valve 49 and through the passage 48 into the pressure chamber. Y
ThisoperationV is repeated until suiiicient pressure has been built up within the pressure chamber to force the liquid outward through the tube 30. After pressure has been properly built up, the sprayer will operate eiiicie'ntly for a relatively long period of time without adding to the pressure within the pressure chamber. However, the lever 41 I may be manipulated from time to time dur'- ing the spraying operation to maintain proper pressure.V
The invention is susceptible of variousV changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall withinV the scope of the appended claim. Having describedV the invention whatl is claimed is: Y
ln a spraying` apparatus, a main liquid containing tank, a pressure tank located centrally therein, and having a liange at its upper end reposing upon the upper edge of said tank, a cap closing both of said tanks and having a horizontally disposed slot opening at one edge thereof, a horizontal partition arranged within the pressure tank adjacent the top thereof, a cylinder located within the pressure tank, a fiange on the upper end of said cylinder and supported by said partition, a supply pipe h-avin'gits-v inner end located within the pressure tank adjacent the bottom thereof, said pipe being extended through the top of said tank and received by the slot of said cap, a piston operating within the cylinder, check valve controlledportsproviding communication between .the maintank and the pump cylinder, and between, the
pump cylinder andthe pressurer tank, a piston rod projecting through said cap, and
means connected with the piston rod for operating the piston with the apparatus supported onthe back of the user. u
