This invention relates to mixing apparatus and particularly to a machine or apparatus for mixing materials, such as the ingredients of concrete. I s

Furthermore, difliculty has been ex erienced 10 in effecting the complete discharge of the material from mixers of the type specified.
This invention has for its salient object to provide a mixer adapted for thoroughly and efficiently stirring and working the ingredients of a stiff or relatively dry mix.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mixer so constructed and arranged that the mixed materials can be quickly, positively and completely discharged from the apparatus. i

The invention briefly described consists of a receptacle having deflecting means therein and a member centrally disposed in the receptacle and also having vanes adapted to coact with the receptacle vanes in thoroughly intermixing the material in the receptacle. Means is provided for rotating the receptacle and the centrally disposedmember in opposite directions and for reversing the direction of rotation of these parts. The centrally disposed member. carries the closure for the discharge opening of the receptacle and is so 50 tation of the closure.

In the form of the invention illustrated, the mixer consists of a receptacle lOhaving an annular flange 11 extending laterally therefrom and supported on a plurality of rollers 12 carried by a ring 13 which in turn is supported on vertical frame members or posts 14 and 15. r
The receptacle 10 also hasmounted on its outer surface aplurality ofvvertically disposed rollers 18 which engage an annular guide-rail 19 carried by the frame members 14 and 15. The upper endof the receptacle has secured thereto a ring 20 having an uped on vertical axes and carried by an annular frame 23.
The receptacle 10 has secured thereto on its outer surface, a gear 25, and the annular .frame 23 has also secured thereto at the upper end thereof, a gear 26.

ring 37 as shown in Fig. 2, is split, the two halves being securedtogether by flanges 38 andclamping bolts 39. The inner surface of the ring 37 isprovided with coarse screw threads 40 and the threaded upper end of a cylindrical post 'i 46 is mounted in the ring 37. The outer surface of the upper threaded portion of the cylindrical post 46' has secured thereto a pair of stop lugs 48 and 49.
The lug 48 is adapted to engage a lug 50 carried by the upper end of the ring37 and the lug 49'is adapted to engage a lug 51 secured to the lower surface of the ring 37.
The receptacle 10 has a discharge opening 55 at thelower end thereof adapted to be closed by a closure 56 carried by apost or rod 57, The upper end of the rod has secured thereto a disk 58 which is positioned wardly extending flange 21 within which are disposed a plurality ofqrollers 22 mountwithin the cylindrical post 46. A disk 59 is fixedly secured in the lower end portion of the cylindrical post 56 and a spring 60 is interposed between the disk 59 and a disk 61 which is positioned below the disk 58. The adjacent surfaces of the disks 5S and 61 are grooved and have positioned therebetween balls 62.
From the foregoing description it. will be seen that the spring 60 tends to hold the closure in engagement with the closure seat or inner surface of the opening 55, when the cylindrical post 46 is disposed in the position shown in Fig. 1. It will also be clear that the post 46 can rotate freely without imparting any rotation to the closure 56.
An outwardly flared skirt- 65 is secured to the lower end of the outer surface of the post 46 and deflecting blades or vanes 66 are mounted on the skirt. The vanes 66 deflect the material outwardly and upwardly.
The post 46 also has secured thereto two sets of vanes 70 and 71 adapted to deflect the material thrown inwardly by the vanes 30 and 31carried by the receptacle.
A discharge chute or funnel 73 is carried by the frame members 14 and 15 and is disposed beneath the discharge opening 55 of the receptacle 10.
Means is provided for rotating the receptacle 10 in either direction and driving connections are also provided for rotating the annular frame 23 in either direction. Any suitable driving connections may be utilized but in the form of the invention illustrated, there is shown a drive shaft adapted for connection to any suitable source of power. A sleeve 81 is splined to the driving shaft 80 and has secured thereto a pair of gears 82 and 83. In the position of the sleeve illustrated in Fig. 1, the gear 82 meshes with a gear 85 carried by a shaft 86. The shaft 86 has secured thereto a pair of gears 87 and 88. Gear 88 meshes with the gear 26 carried by the annular frame 23. Gear 87 meshes with an idler gear 89 supported on the frame member 14, and the gear 89 meshes with the gear 25 carried by the receptacle 10.
lVit-h the driving connections in the position shown in Fig. 1, the annular frame member 23 will be driven in one direction and the receptacle will be driven in the opposite direction. Means is provided for shifting the sleeve 81 longitudinally on the shaft 80,
this being accomplished by a bell crank shaft lever 90 which engages a collar 91 carried by the sleeve 81. When the sleeve is shifted downwardly on the shaft 80, the gear 82 moves out of mesh with the gear 85 and gear 83 moves into mesh with an idler gear 95,
which in turn meshes with a gear 96 carried by the shaft- 86. The shaft 86 will therefore be rotated in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation imparted through the gears 82 and 85.
The ring 37 has secured thereto an upwardly extending cap or casing 98 and the outer periphery of the ring is supported on rollers 99 which engage the upper surface of the flange 20 carried by the receptacle 10.
Operation When the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, and the stop 49 is in engagement with the lug 51, the rotation of the parts by the driving connections shown in operative position in Fig. 1 will cause the receptacle to be rotated in one direction and the central cylindrical post 46 will be rotated in the 0pposit-e direction. The vanes 30, 31, 66, 70 and 71 will cooperate to thoroughly intermix and break up the ingredients or material within the mixer. After the mixing has been accomplished to the desired extent, the driving connections are reversed, whereupon the annular frame 23 will, by reason of the threaded engagement between the ring 37 and the threaded upper end 45 of the post 46,
' cause the post 46 to be moved downwardly and axially, thus opening the closure 56. "Vhen the downward movement of the post has been checked by engagement of the stop lug 48 with the lug 50, the post will be rotated, this rotation being in a direction reverse to the rotation of the post during the mixing operation. The inclination of the vanes carried by the post will assist in discharging the material from the receptacle.
After the material has been discharged the driving connections are again reversed and the post 46 will move axially and upwardly until the lug 49 engages the under surface of the ring 37, thus closing the opening in the bottom of the receptacle.
It will be obvious that the rotation of the post 46 does not effect the rotation of the closure 56 by reason of the mounting of the closure or bearings carried by the post.
Although one specific embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claims.

1. A mixer comprising a rotary receptacle, means for rotating said receptacle, means therein rotatable independently thereof and movable axially thereof, means for rotating said rotatable and axially moving means and a closure for the receptacle carried by said means.
