Description

G'. 3- OVERSHINER.
PLOW.
Patented May 30,1876.
Inventor Oak/MM,
mPErms. PH'OT ER WASHINGTON n c UNITED STATES .PATENT- OFFICE.
GIDEON J. OVERSHINER, SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT- IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,024, dated May 30, 1876; application filed April 3,1876.
T 0 all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, GDJEON J. OJTERSHINER, of San J os, Santa Clara county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my share. Fig. 2 is a back view. Fig. 3 is a bottom view. Fig. 4is a front view, showing the share separated from the mold-board.
c is the mold-board, and b is the share, of my plow.
Various devices have hitherto been employed to secure the share to the mold-board in such a manner asto allowit to be removed among others the use of dovetailed tongues and slots, either made in a line with thejoint or, in some cases, transversely to it. These are open to the objections that they easily become rusted, or otherwise rendered immovable by the warping and changing of shape in the share when sharpened by hammering it, so that the joints will no longer fit.
In my invention I fit the share to the moldboard with a plain joint, 0, and I provide two lugs, 61 and 0, upon the share, which fit into shallow recesses provided for them upon the back of the mold-board a, and between it and the land-side F, and these, with an upwardprojecting lug or point, i, upon the share, serve to hold the parts in place, while the single hookbolt 9 draws all the parts firmly together.
' In the construction of my plowl make a block of metal, h, of the proper shape, and to v the front of this block the mold-board a is bolted, asshown. The land-side F is bolted to the side, and a recess, j, is made between the land-side and the lower part of h, which admits the lug c from the share. The moldboard has its lower outside edge thickened, so as to allow the recess is to be made for the reception of the lug d, which also projects from the share. The lower front corner of the moldboard is cut away on a bevel of about fortyfive degrees, and a corresponding projection, 71, is made upon the share, so that when brought together the lugs and projection will prevent the mold-board and share from slipping upon each other when jointed together. In order to secure the parts firmly, and at the same time render it easy to take them apart, I use a hook, L, the point of which enters a hole, m, made in the upper part of the share, and so as to pass through the thickened portion where the lug d is formed. The upper part of the rod, upon which the hook is formed, extends up on the inside of the moldboard, and passes through a 1ug,-n, on the upper part of the mold-board. A nut, 0, upon the upper end of the rod is then turned down, and draws the two parts moldboard and share-together, holding them firmly without theneed of any other fastening. This renders it easy to release the share at any time for sharpening, and it can never be rusted or warped, so that it will not easilyseparate or go together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire, to secure by Letters Patent, is
The mold-board a and share I) of a plow, formed as shown, and having the lugs 61 and e, and corresponding recesses, in combination with the hook-rod L, entering a hole in the share, and provided with a nut, 0,. at its upper end, by which, when turned down upon the lug n, the parts are held together without other fastening, substantially as and for the V purpose herein described.
