Description

A. G. LULLL EXTENSION CONNECTING-ROD.
'No.178,014.. Patented. May30,187.6.
N PEIEHS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. (1. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' ALBERT e. LULL, or osHKosH, Wisconsin.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXT ENSION CONNECTING-RODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 178,014, dated May 30, 1876; applicationfiled August 19', 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, ALBERT G. LULL, of the city of Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented an Extension Connecting-Rod, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings andthe letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to increase the length of any crank-arm without increasing the movement of the lever by whichthe power is communicated, or, where steam-power is used, without increasing the stroke of the piston, while, at the same time, increased power may be obtained by attaching the power at a greater distance from the fulcrum of the lever. The applied power may act either in a line with or at any angle with the ways or guides. V
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device, and Fig. 2 is the same showing the rod extended.
Power is applied to the lever A at any point,
as C does. At the same time the joint at E on the opposite armof the lever A is also extended, and in addition to the movement forward given it by the extension of 0, moves forward an increased distance by reason of its own extension. The connecting-arm O is attached at its farther extremity, by a joint, F, to the lever P,-which is attached, by its arm H and tie-rod S, to the lever A at any point J, such that while A isoperated P shall be similarly acted on to effect the straightenin g of thejoints attached to it. So, while the joints connecting with A are extending, the joint at F is also being operated on, and, in addition to moving forward the same distance as E, gains the additional movement of its own extension; and so on, the levers and connectingrods may be indefinitely multiplied, and each joint added. increases the length of the extension, and, consequently, the length of the crank to which it may be attached. M is the connecting-rod, which is attached to the crank of any driving-shaft; or the device may be applied for other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The levers A P, with their movable ful- .erums D G and tie-rods-S, connecting-arms O R, and vibrating stay-arm B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the series of levers and arms, as shown, the adjustable long arm of the lever vA, substantially as and for the purposes specified. Y
' ALBERT G. LULL.
