This invention relates to improvements in boxes or cases of an ornamental character which are usually covered with plush,-leather, or other textile or fibrous material, and
are designed forpholding such articles as Jewelry, safety razors, and'other devices 1ntendecl for personal use, and comprises a specific modification of the invention more broadly 'disclosed'in my co-pending application, Serial Number 265,681 filed-March. 29, 1928. I
The principal object of the presentinventionis toprovide a box comprisinga base, a
hollow side wall of invertedchannel construction having an outer flange. forming a continuous vertical face, a web forming the upperedge of the wall and presenting a rim simulating a thick wall, and means securing said side wall to the base. I v I A further object of the invention is to provide a construction of the character above described in which the side wall may be formed from a sheet ofmetal,orfrom a suit ably shaped and notched strip. of structural metal. v I I V s A further object of the invention is to provide a construction-of this character in which the, inner flange of the sidewall is of less effective wi dth-thanthe outer flange forming the continuous face of the side wall, with means for securingthe base to the side wall 7 engaging the narrow inner flange of the side 7 wall and acting to clamp the outer flange thereof firmly'against the base. The box illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, comprises a base 1, and a side wall of channel con struction comprising aweb 2 which forms the upper edge of the side wall and presents a continuous rim simulating a thick wall, a continuous outer vertical flange 8 forming the outer face of the wall, and an inner flange 4 which desirably extends downwardly fin parallelism with the outer flange 3.
The base and side walls are formed separately by die cutting and die pressing machines. A suitable covering 5, of plush, leather, textile, or other fibrous material, may be applied to the side wall, and also if desired to the base before the base and side walls are assembled. The box may be made of any desired size, shape, or form. The base may conform to the periphery of the side walls, but desirably ma y project beyond theperiphery thereof and may be made to coni'orn'i to or to depart from, the contour of the side wall as may be desired.
In the construction of the side wall a flat sheet is cut out to the desired contour and a central portion also cut out to present an edge 6 extending in substantial parallelism with the peripheral edge of the sheet. The slits or notches 7 are cut to extend from the corners, or other portions of the cut-out area, to, or approximately to, the line which defines th inner margin of the upper edge or wall of the channel. The plate may then be bent by suitable dies, either first into the form illustrated in Fig. 2 in which the outer flange 3 is bent downwardly from the web 2 and the inner flange thereafter bent down in a suitable manner, or the outer flange 3 and inner flange 4- may be bent down sin'iultaneously to form a channel-shaped wall such as is illustrated in Fig. 3. By reason of the slits or notches the inner flange when bent dowmvardiy will produce a series of sections instead of a continuous inner flange but inasmuch as these all form a part of the same flange construction such sections will be referred to as the flange. Desi rably the lower margin of the flange may at the same time be bent inwardly at right angles to the plane of the flange to provide a lip 8; such lips being upon each of the sections will be referred to as a lip.
When the sheet has thus been cut and pressed it will assume the form of the side wall illustrated in Figs. 3, and 9. The web 2 and the inner flange 4 may be cut away be fore, during, or after the die-shaping process. so that the outer flange Elwill present a con tinuous wall along the back, but by reason of the omission of'the web and inner flange wi l provide a recess which will enable a suitable hinge to be secured directly to the roar-wall. Desirably-tabs 9 are punched inwardly from the flange within the recessed portion of the wall and are adapted to enter complementary slots in one of the plates 10 of a h nge member for securing the base to the top. tively shorter than the outer flange 3, so that when. the tabs t1 upon the base engage such lips the lower edge of the outer flange will be pressed firmly against the base.
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 5,
the base 1 is provided with an upwardly inclined rim portion 12 and the inner flange is illustrated as equal in width to the outer flange with the lip extending inwardly from the bottom thereof in substantially the same plane as the lower edge of the outer flange. In this construction the upwardly sloping rim of the base 12 provides a suflicient separationbetween the lip and the base to enable the tabs 11 to clamp the lower edge of the outer flange firmly upon the base. In the construction illustrated in Fig. 5, a covering material extendsfrom beneath the edge of the outer flange 3, over the outer face thereof, across the web 2 of thechannel which forms the upper edge of the side wall, thence downwardly along theinner flange 4. The covering 13 of the base extends over the base, around the peripheral edge thereof which projects beyond the side wall, thence inwardly upon the upper face of the base. and being edge of the base may be folded up against I the outer'face of the side wall, as illustrated in Fig. 5, or may be permitted to extend beyond the face of the wall, as illustrated in Figs. land 3,as may be desired.
' In Fig. 4 a modified form of mechanism for clamping the side wall to the base is illustrated. in which the inner flange 4 of the side wall is provided with recesses 14 in proximity to the lower edge thereof, which is not provided with a lip, and the ends of the tabs 11 bent into the recesses and downwardly upon the lower edge thereof.

The notches in the flange and web are made such distances apart as to produce sides of the desired length. The notches may be spaced differently to produce boxes of differing contour.
. When-the strip is folded the opposite-edges of each notch abut and the V-shaped projec-f tions 21 fill the corners between the sides d and ends of'the box to produce a hollow side wall having an'eifectively' continuous upper edge, and also a substantially continuous inner flange and lip. The outer the strip in place during the process of manuflange 16 desirably is: continued beyond the end of the hollow wall to provide extensions 22 which, whenithe strip is bent into the desired form of si'de wall, abut at their ,ends inthe same plane.
'Desirably the abutting ends of the side wall are provided .with interengaging means, such as a dovetail oint 23. ada ted to hold facturc. and also"'to strengthen the strip. The vertical flange-22: desirably is provided with a plurality of tabs 24* partially cut from and integral with the strip and extending therefrom andengagingthe plate 25 of a .hinge,which may be of the character heretofore described. Theside wall and the base may be covered with any suitable material and the covering material 'desirably may extend beneaththe lower edge of the outer flange of the side wall, andalso around" the periphery .of' the base beneath the lower edge of the outer flange of the side-wall as heretoforedescribed.
Any suitable'nieans may be provided for securing the base to the side wall. As illus trated herein thebase 26 extends beyond the neriphery'of the side wall and is secured tolthe side wall by 'a' plurality of tabs 27' which are partially cut'from and integral with the base'and extend upwardly therc fromover and 'into clamping engagement with the lip -17 of the side'wallf In this construction, asin' the construe ti'on previously described. the inwardly extending lip 17 may 'lie upon the upper surface of the baseof the box or may'efi'ectively terminate short ofthe base. A box comprising a base, a continuous hollow-side wall of inverted channelshape having a flange forminga continuous outer wall of inverted channel shape having an outer flange forming a continuous vertical face, a web forming the upper edge of said wall and presenting a rim simulating a thick wall, an inner flange and interengaging means upon said base and said inner flange clamping said base to said side wall.

A box comprising a base, a hollow side wall of inverted channel shape having an outer flange forming a continuous vertical face'ofpredetermined form, a web forming the upper edge of said wall presenting a rim simulating a thick wall, and an inner flange of less width than said outer flangefand means: onsaid base engaging said inner flange and acting to clamp the outer flange firmly upon said' base.
5, A box comprising a base, a hollow side wall of inverted channel shape having an outer flange forming a continuous vertical face of predetermined form, a web forming the upper edge of said wall presenting a rim simulating a thick wall, and an inner flange, a plurality of tabs cut out from and integral with said base extending therefrom and ensaid inner flange and acting to clamp the outer flange firmly upon said base.

A box comprising a base, a hollow side wall-of inverted channel shape having an outer flange forming a continuous vertical face of predetermined form, aweb forming the upper edge of said wall presenting a rim simulating a'thick wall, and an inner flange having an inwardly projecting lip, means on said base engaging, said lip and acting to clamp the outer flange firmly upon said base. A box comprising a base, a hollow side wall of inverted channel shape having an outer flange member presenting a continuous vertical face of predetermined form, a web member forming the upper edge and an inner flange member extending in substantial parallelism with said outer flange member, certain of said members. being notched to permit the construction of a side wall of a predetermined form and to provide a smooth continuous rim therefor, and
wall of inverted channel shape formed from a sheet of material to provide an outer continuous face of predetermined form, a 'continuous integral upper edge presenting a rim simulating a thick edge, and an inner vertical flange having notches extending from its lower edge substantiall to the inner edge of said rim, lips integra with and extending inwardly from the lower portion of said inner flange,:a pluralityof tabs partially out from and integral with said base extending therefrom and engaging saidlip and acting therewith to clamp said side wall firmly upon said base. A box comprising a base, covering material on the outer face of the base extending around theperi hery thereof and on to the inner face, a hol ow side wall of inverted channel shape having an outer flange forming a continuous vertical face, a web forming the upper edge of said wall and presenting a rim simulating a thick wall, and an inner vertical flange, covering material secured to said side wall extending over said outer vertical face, over said rim and along the inner face of the inner flange, and interengaging means upon said base and inner flange clamping said base to said side wall.

A box comprising 'a base, covering material on the outer face of the base extending around the periphery thereof and on to the innerface, a hollow side wall of inverted channel shape having an outer flange forming a continuous vertical face, a webrforming the upper edge of saidwall and presenting a rim simulating a thick wall, and an inner verticalflange, covering material secured tosaid side wall extending over said outer vertical face, beneath the lower edge thereof, over said rim and along the inner face of the inner flange, and means securing said base to said side wall with the edges of both covering materials of said base and side wall interposed between the lower edge of the outer flange of the side wall and said base.

A box comprising a base, a hollow side wall of inverted channel shape having an outer flange forming a continuous vertical face of predetermined form, a'web forming the upper edge of said side wall and presenting a rim simulating a thick wall, an inner vertical flange having at its lower end an inwardly projecting lip, a collar having its lower edge resting upon said lip extending along the u per edge of said side wall and pro1ecting a We the same, a plurality of tabs partially cut from and integral with said base and extending therefrom, engaging said'lip and acting therewith to clamp said side wall upon said base, and a filler in said box havingits peripheral edge frictionally engaging said collar and held in position thereby.

A box comprising a base, a hollow side wall of inverted channel shape'having an outer flange forming a continuous vertical face of'predetermined form, a web forming the'upper edge of said side wall and presenting a rim simulating a thick wall, an inner vertical flange having at its lower end an inwardly projecting lip, a plurality of tabs partially cut from and integral with said base extending therefrom and engaging said lip and aetin therewith to clamp said side wall to said iase, a cover of like construction hinged to said base, a collar having its lower edge resting upon said lip extending along the edge of said side wall and projecting above the same, a filler in said box having its peripheral edge frictionally engaging said collar and held thereby, and a filler in said cover having its peripheral edge frictionally engaging the side wall thereof and extending over the upper edge ofsaid collar when the cover is closed down upon said box.- I r I In'testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this s ecification.
