SAMUEL WARD, or LOGKPORT, NEW YORK- IMPROVEMENT IN SAD-IRON HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 77.974, dated May 30, 1876; application filed March 16,1876.

. To all whom it may concern Be, it known that I, SAMUEL J. WARD, of Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented aSad-Iron Holder and Guard; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement, with a cloth holder, of a wire frame and guard of peculiar construction, and protecting-shields, all being combined in one implement in such manner as to be easily applied to a sad-iron, to protect the operator against the efl'ects of theheat emitted by the In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and. use the same, I shall proceed to describe its particulars of construction, and thereby refer to the annexed sheet of drawings hereinbefore mentioned, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my sad- Fig. 2 is a plan of frame thereof.

A is one of the ordinary sad or smoothening irons. B is the cloth holder, surrounding a wire frame shown in Fig. 2, consisting of four curved end wires, 0, all of which are attached with one end to shields D, and provided on their other extremity with eyes E. These curved end wires are so arranged in relation to each other that two of them will eyes formed on both extremities of said braces F, and thereby keep said end wires 0 in Fig. 3 is a plan of the metallic proper position. G are two guards. They are also provided with eyes on both their ends, embracing the end. wires 0. Their purpose is to enable the holder being readily opened for removal from the sad-iron.

The operation of my improved sad-iron holder is easily comprehended: The shields D being permanently attached to the end wires 0, and these being hinged to each other, and the cloth holder B being sewed to these shields and end wires, the sad-iron holder can be readily opened longitudinally and placed over the handle of the sad-iron, which may now be grasped by the hand. and manipulated Without fear of burning the hands of the operator. The cloth, being sewed to the shields along the right linear adjacent edges of said shields, is prevented from crimping around the handle of the sad-iron, and assists in the closing of the wire frame and protecting-shields.

By this arrangement the holder is always ready for removal and less liable to get out of orderrthan those holders otherwise constructed.

To remove the holder the guards G serve as handles, so that, when the operator opens his or her hands to remove the holder, the thumb will come in contact with one, and the other fingers of the hand with the opposite, guard G, and the holder thus opened forremoval.

It'will be observed that the shields D serve as protectors against the heat emitted by the hot iron, and that their application to a removable sad-iron holder forms a very desirable feature of and adjunct to such holder.

The cloth B is sewed with two opposite edges to the shields D, and with its other sides to the frame, which it is thus made to surround, and thereby prevented from derangement, said frame forming a support for said cloth. I
