Description

F. PEKAR Oct. 21, 1930.
BURGLARPROOF SAFETY WINDOW LOCK AND ANTIRATTLING DEVICE Filed June 4. 19 29 INVENTOR. 7;a/zZ AZ ATTORNEY.
Patented Oct., Z 1i, 1930 or FRANK PEKArafor BRIDGEPOBT, ooivnncrIcurflr BURGLARPROOE SAFETY wmpow LocKAiciJ maritime DVEVICEQJQ i Application filed June 4,
Thisinvention relates to latches and has special reference to a sash latch which I pref-' erably term an improved 'burglarsafety window lock and anti-rattling device.
One important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
A second important'obj ect of the invention.
' is to improve thewindow' latch shown and described in my March 6, 1928. 1 g I .e
A third important object of the invention is to provide a form of window latch wherein the spring which normally urges vthe latch into latching positionalso acts-to holdthe prior Patent 1,661,634 of latch in free position. p
With the above andother objects in View as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of-parts'hereinafter' fully described, illustrated in .the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed. I V
, In the accompanying drawings like char: acters of reference indicate like parts in the a several views, and
Figure 1 is a section through a pair of window sash showing onevfor'm of the improved latch in side elevation.
Figure 2 is a view of this form of latch also in side elevation and showing the latch in free position. a v i Figure 3 is anend view of the latch from the left hand of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail top view of the pawl member of the latch.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure?v I r Figure 6 is a side view of a somewhat modified form of latch.
Figure 7 is an end view thereof.
' Figure 8 is a' 'section on the line 8-8 of Figure 7. Figure 9 is a plan view of the modified form. V
In both forms of the invention there is pro vided an attaching device or housing in the form of a box 10 open at the top and front and provided at its sides with attaching feet 11 by means of which it may be secured to the top of a roller sash 12 adjacent one side" thereof so that'the pawl,'which:willb'epres v ently described, may engage th'e'sidej frame member 13 of the'iipl oerfsash lt". Through .the side walls inea'ch form extend a pivot pin'15 and on this pivot pin "is pivotedxa pawi which comprises a U-shaped member 16'pre'ferably formed. of; stamped metal and fca'rry ingbetween'itsl's ides a rubber friction"m'eni-j ber17ivhi'chnormally engages the'side member 13 whentheIatChisin'useQ e "In the" form of the v-in vention" shown in Figure 6 prongs 181eXtendf0rwardly to bite intolthe 'windowfmaterial if the upper sash is forced down or theilower 'sas'h forced up,
thus aiding the frictional effect of' the amember' 17. These two forms arelsubstantially alike except in relationto their spring 616,,
ment and in the form shown in Figures 1 to '5 a coilspring 19 is wound on' the pin "151be-- tween the sides of the'pawl'16. {One end. of
the w ire' as 20, forming this spring, extends throughan opening 21 in the" rear wallof the housing 10 while {the other endlof saidiwire extends through a transverse: opening '22 formed in the top rear end'of thepawl 16,
this last end of'vthe spring beingflattened' as at 23 to form a thumb piece;- Leading down-f wardly diagonally from "the top edge of the 'rear'wall of' the housing '10 isa slot 241 which terminates in a n0tche25 and byv reasonof the slot 22, and the slot 2l'andits notch the pawl maybe tilted into theposition shown in Fig- 23 ofthe spring and guiding it throughthe slot 24 into the notch 25'where. itwill hold the pawl raised, Of course; when released this spring actsgto force" the -pawl into; the
position shown in Figure 1.
2 In Figures 6 to 9 the pin 15 is surrounded notch 29 formed in the rear wall of the housing 10. In the top rear portion of the pawl 16 in this formis a, slot 30 terminatingin a notch 31. NowySO long as the'end 32 of the spring is not engaged in the notch 31 this spring will act to force the pawl into active position but, ifthe end 32 of the spring be ure 2 by simply pressing on the flattened end 16 ,will be held raised as shown in Figure 8,
- being readily released by moving the spring end 321aterally. There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device ofthe kind described for the purpose speQ fie l- T It is obvious that minor changes maybe made in the form and construction of thein o v I r Vention wi h ut departing froni'the material- :1 1r 5 7" f; r spirit thereof, not, therefore desired a to confinewheinventiofi to theexact fiirm W herein shown and described, but itis desired '7 to include all such as pro-perlyfiorne" ithin thescope claimed. a a a Having thusldescribed the invention, what is c1aimed,asnew, is:
1 In a sash latch, a housingl'openlat'the front and ,top and 'having meansfor attachment to a Window sash, a pawl ivoted in said-housing and projecting forwardly to engage a selectively fixed objectadjacent-said v sashjaspring urging said pawl into object engaging-active positionandhaving one end' v 1 i projecting for manipulation *to shift; the spring to-position to hold the pawl away from' the object, said pawl having means at its rear end tohold the said spring end,y and neans; if V at the rear of the housingtojengage and hold said spring end with the p'awl in raised posi 25111 a sash t ahalsn'gopn a the front and top and having means for attach-1 ment to a windowsash; apawl pivoted in said housing and projecting forwardly to engage a selectivelyfixed object adj acent said sasl1, aspring urging said'pawl into object engagingactiveposition and having one end projecting for manipulation to shift the spring to position to holdthepawl away from the object, said pawl having means at its rear end to holdthe said spring end, and said house ing being slotted at its'rearwall to provide a laterally extending portion beneath which said spring end is engageable- V a V Ina sash latch, a housingwopen at the front andtop and having means for attach ment. to 1 a window 7 sash, a pawl pivoted I in i said housing and projecting forwardly to en gage a selectively fixed object adjacent said sash a spring urging said pawlinto object 1:, I
engaging active position and having oneend projecting for manipulation to shift the spring to position to hold the pawl away from the object, said pawl having a diagonal slot in its ear top portion through ywhich said" spring end extends, and said housing having a diagonal slot extending downwardly from its top edge and terminating in a downward ly facing notch at its inner end.v
In testimony whereof'I aflix-my signature. H
