My invention relates to a foldable case for carrying pens, or pencils, or other small articles, of similar shape, such as may be formed of leather, or other flexible material,

and suitable for use as a holder for such articles when carried in a hand bag or satchel, the pocket or elsewhere. The principal object of my invention is the prov1sion in such a case of a sheet metal clip member which shall form simple and efficient means for holding in place the pen or pencil or other articles to be carried and in some measure stiffen the central or back section of the case and cause it to lie smooth and flat. With this and incidental objects and advantages in view I have devised the novel pen or pencil holder hereinafter described and which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the essential elements thereof being more fully set forth in the appended claims.

The body member 1 of the holder may be formed as usual, of a single rectangular sheet of imitation leather or the like, folded inwardly at its margins and stitched to the lining member 2, which may suitably be con structed of silk cloth or other suitable fabric. A paper interlining 8 may be interposed between the body member and the lining, as

shown, to stiffen the holder somewhat.

Two of the opposite sides of the structure thus formed are provided with end flaps H adapted to fold inwardly over the central or back section 5 of the holder, and the side sections 6-6 of the holder are adapted to be folded over such end flaps and secured together by the snap fastener members 77 to close the holder and enclose any articles which it may contain. The central section of the lining member is reinforced by a sheet of paper 2 glued to its inneror'rear face.

The sheet metal member which provides the clips or retainers for holding pens or pencils inthe holder is formed of a blank having a relatively broadand wide body portion 8, extending over the central area of the central section of the holder andopposite narrower clip portions 9, 9 extending from the sides of the body portion 8, this member being made of thin flexible non-elastic iron or other metal which is soft and capable of being bent easily and which will're tain the shape given it. To What may be termed the back of the body section 8 is glued a strip of facing fabric 10 which is slitted from its oppositeedges along the edge of the body mem her to and the clip sections 9 to permit the end portions of such facing to be lapped over and glued to such clip sections. This manner of the angles between suchbody member cutting and folding the facing fabric avoids I folds at the back of the ridges at the back of the holder, while the covering of the clips is securely held by the continuous and connecting central part of the fabric. In constructing the holder the clips arebent at rightangles to the body section and passed through slits in the previously formed reinforced central section. of the lining member 2, 'andsuch member with the interlining 3 and flaps 4 and leather body member assembled and the edges af the latter turned over and the parts securedtogether by a marginal line of stitching or by other suitable means. against the back of the holder, one upon the other, until it is desired to place articles in the holder, when they-may be bent to fit down snugly against the articles placed beneath. The flexibility of the clips and of the holder itself is such as to permit ready removal and replacement of the articles which the holder is used to contain. The covered sheet metal clip member, formed as above described and shown detached in Fig. 3, may also be employed as a retaining member for holding other articles, such as jewelry, in boxes or containers of other construction than the folding pen and pencil holder above described, invention relating more specifically to the clip member than to the container.

I claim:

1. A holder for pens and pencils including a body member and a lining member having side sections adapted to be folded together over a central section and a flexible non-elastic sheet metal member having a broad and widev body portion interposed between and extending over the central area of the central sections of said body member and lining member and having a pair of clip portions extend-v ing from the sides of said body portion through the central section of said lining member.

2. A holder for pens and pencils including a body member and a lining member having side sections adapted to be folded together over a central section, said lining member having a stifiening reinforcement upon the rear face of its central section, and a flexible non-elastic sheet metal member having a broad and wide body portion interposed between and extending over the central area of the central section of said body member and the reinforced central section of said lining member and having a pair of clip portions extending from the sides of said body portion through the reinforced central section of said lining member.

3. A holder for pens and pencils,including a body member and a lining member having side sections adapted to be folded together over a central section and a flexible nonelastic sheet metal member having abody portion interposed between and extending over the central area of the central sections of said body member and lining member and having a pair of clip portions extending from the sides of said body portion through the central section of said lining member, said sheet metal member being: provided with a covering fabric glued thereto and comprising a rear portion extending across the back of the body portion of said sheet metal member, and side portions folded to enclose the clip portion of such member.

4:. A flexible non-elastic sheet metal retaining member for containers having a lining member, and consisting of a broad and wide body portion arranged beneath said lining member and a pair of narrower clip portions extending from the sides of said bodyportion throughsaid lining member.

5. A flexible non-elastic sheet metal retainportion of such member.
