Patented Sept. 16, 1930 z Unirse STATES PATENT OFFICE PIPE-UNSCREWING SOCKET for removing pipe sections from a well, and more particularly to a device which may be termed an unscrewing socket adapted `to embrace a section of pipein `a well casing, whereby thissection maybe unscrewed and disconnected from vthe lowermost sections.
An object of the present invention resides in the provision of a socket adapted to be nr lowered in a well casing without disturbing the string of piping thereinand adapted to embrace one of the sections comprising said string, whereby this section may be unscrewed from the section immediately therebelow.'
Another object of this invention is the provision of an unscrewing socket for well piping including a milling surface adapted to mill its way over the end of the upper T section of piping, whereby the socket will slide downwardly over the piping.
A furthery object of the I invention is the provision of an unscrewing lsocket for well piping khaving its lower end 'provided `with a plurality of teeth adapted to bite into the top edge of the uppermost coupling, whereby this coupling may be removed from the well with the section of piping disposed thereabove. A `V f 32S A still further object ofmy invention has to do with the provision of an unscrewing socket for well piping includingV an eccentric wedge having a toothed surface adapted to bite into the wall of thesection of pipe to 3be removed fromthe well. l
Otherobjects and advantages of my invention will more fully appear from the followingdetailed description taken 1n connecj tion with the accompanying drawing, which 4Qillustrates several embodiments thereof and in which?"` i j Y Figurel 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectionalfview through a well, casing and the socket of my invention showing the socket in cooperation with va section of piping to be removed from the casing; j
Figure 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken through'my novel socket on substantially theline'II-II of Figure 1 look- "n ing downwardly andshowing the position The present invention has to do with means Application 1e`d October 19, 1927. Serial No. 227,196.

Figure et is a crosssectional view similar to Figure 3 illustrating a slip adapted for use in connection with piping having left 0r wedge prior to the unscrewing lhand threads and showing the position of the slip when the socketl is turned in the direction indicated by the arrow;
Figure 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the socketof my invention;
Figure 6 is a bottom end view of the socket; 65
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view through a. modified form of socket adapted to be lowered inside of the piping to be removed from the well; y I
Figure 8 is a cross-sectional viewl through 10 this modified form of socket showing it applied to a pipe drawn to a `reduced scale, and
'Figure 9 is a bottom end view of the socket shown in Figure 7 drawn to a reduced scale.
In the drawings, like reference characters designate similar parts throughout the several views. r
The reference character 10 designates genc erally the socket of my invention which comprises a tubular body 11 `having its upper end 80 provided withfa threaded countersunk opening 12 adapted to have threaded therein the y lower reduced end 14 of a bowl or tube 13.
This bowl has an annular tapered'slip seat 15 adapted'to accommodate a plurality of slips 85 16 secured to lowering reins 17. These slips,
jas will `be more fully explained hereinafter,
are adapted to be lowered by means ofthe reins 17 into the spacebetween the annular seat and the pipe section 18, whereby the pipe 9 4section 18 may berigidly anchored to the socket 10, thus enabling this pipe section and .the socket to bei removed together from the i wellcasing 19` The upper end ofthe pipesection is shown as being broken and provided with a ragged or rough edge 20. Thelower end of this section 18 is threaded into the top of a pipe `coupling 21 which has also threaded into it l 'a lower pipe section 22.
