rlhe invention relates to journal boxes for railway cars and, generally considered, involves the production of a journal box of re liable construction which can be economically manufactured.
One of the principal objects oi' the inven- 4-tion is to provide a journal box composed oi a plurality of sections, one of which is formed of wrought metal and another of l0 which is formed of cast or forged metal, said sections being advantageously united to pro'- vide a composite journal box of exceedingly strong construction but comparatively light weight.
Anotherobject of the invention resides in the provision of a con posite journal box in which the lower portion may be readily formed of pressed metal and the upper portionthereof cast or forged, said upper and lower portions being preferably united by welding along, or at intervals along, the lines of juncture of said portions.
A further object of the invention is to produce a journal box having a cast roof portion and a pressed metal oil well portion, sa-id portions being rigidly united to form a very strong but comparatively lightweight journal box while maintaining the several dimensions thereof according to the il. R. A. standards.
A Ystill further object of the invention is to provide a composite journal box of the class described in which the inn-er dust guard wall is formed oi' a pressed metal plate retained within recesses formed by the shaping of the outer dustguard wall formed integrally with the pressed metal oil well portion of the journal box. 40 lVith these and other objects in view the invention further consists in the particular construction and arrangement oit' the several parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings in which corre sponding reference characters designate similar parts in the several views, the journal box involves a cast metal roof portion l having connected thereto a wrought metal oil well section 2. rlfhe roof or upper portion ot the journal box may be of any desired constructon for co-action with adjacent portions or the car truck side frame and is also pro-' vided with the usual means for supporting the ournal box lid (not shown herein). The journal box roof section l is provided with depending side walls 3, each of said walls being oil'set at their lower ends, as indicated at 4:. The rear end of the roof section is preferably provided with spaced portions 5 and 6 forming the upper part of the dust guartL well lying between the inner and outer dust guard walls.

As shown in the present eonfstruction, the oitset portions 8 are disposed. inwardly of the ollset portions 4l, although it will be understood that the reverse of this construction may be equally well utilized and I do not wish to be understood as limiting the invention to any particular disposition of the adjacent portions ot the roof and oil well sections ot the journal box.
