'Objects of the invention are to render the handling of straight orunmoldedcounters, in the operation of assembling uppers in cluding such counters upontheir lasts,easier, more accurate and expeditious than hereto fore and generally to improve theoperation of the assembling machine. v
Featuresof the invention consist in an organizationfincluding a shoe support movable toward and from the machine and clamping means in the pathof movement of'a shoe on said support arranged to hold the counter portion 'of' the shoe upper against the last: during its movement toward the machine 'so' that there will be no chance for the parts to be. displaced from the position in which they have been placed by the operatorQ: As'herein shown, theclamping means is movable by pressure of the shoe against it to cause'thef upper to be pressed against the'rea'r end of the last. The clamping means may-be held toward the shoe by resilient "means, and .a stop may be provided to arrest outward movement'of the clampingmeans before the outward movement of the shoe support is completed to cause the clamp and shoe to separate. The clamping means may, asshown, comprise a bar pivoted to the shoe support and bifurcated at its upper end, the bifurcations being formed with inclined surfaces which rest against the rear end of thesboe upper and hold the upper and counter against the last at the corners of the last, the space between the bifurcations permitting the operation of. the tacker of an assembling machine in fasteningthe upper and counter to 1925. Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a machine of the class described, the combination of operating instrumentalities, a last support movable from a work receiving position'where the work comprising an upper and last is placed thereon to a position for the work to be operated: upon by said in strumentalities, and means located on the last support for clamping the upper to the last, said means being constructed andarranged to be encountered by the work early in its movement toward said instrumentalities and to be moved by the work during the remainder of its movement into operative'relation to said instrumentalities, said clamping means serving to hold the upper on the last, during the movement thereof into operative relation to the operating instrumentalities, in the position in which it is placed by the operator.
2. In a machine for fastening uppers to lasts, the combination of tackling means, a last support movable from a position to receive an upper and last which is remote from said tacking means into operative relation thereto, and a clamp located adjacent to the su 3 ort in its last and u er receivin osition and in the path of movement of the last and upper into operative relation to the tacking means, said clamp being movable with and by the last and upper throughout the major portion of the movement of the support into operative relation to the tacking means.
3. In a 'machine for assembling uppers upon their lasts preparatory to lasting, the combination of upper securing means, a last support-movable-toward and from the securing means, counter clamping means located adjacent to the last support, means for limiting outward movement of the clamping means to provide a space between the clamping means and the last to'permit'assembling of the upper and counter upon the'supported last, said clamping means being arranged to be engaged by the rear end ofthe-upper andlast early in their movement toward the securing meansto cl'amp the counter'and upperto the last, and yielding means permitting movement of the clamp, upper and last to-' gether intooperative relation to the securing means.
4:. In a machine of the class described,
means for inserting a tack in the rear end of a last, a last support movable from a last and upper receiving position to a position for the upper to be operated upon by said tacking means,'a bifurcated member arranged adjacent to the last support in its last and upper receiving position to be encountered by the last and upper early in their movement on the support toward the tacking means for clamping an upper to the last at the corners of the last during its movement toward the tacking means, and means for locking the support against endwise movement during in sertion of a tackbetween the bifurcations of said member.
5. In a machine for fastening uppers to lasts, the combination of a V-block, fastening inserting means operating between the V- block surfaces, a last support movable toward and from said fastening inserting means, a clamp having rear surfaces like those of the V-block'and front surfaces to engage an upper and clamp it against the corners of the last having the back seam region exposed,
said clamp being located between the fastening inserting means and the support in the path of the upper and last and movable with and by the upper and last when the last support is moved toward the fastening inserting means, and means for locking the last, clamp and V-block together while the fastening means inserts a tack in the region of the back seam. l
6. In a machine for assembling uppers upon their lasts preparatory to lasting, the combination of fastening inserting devices for securing an upper and counter to the rear end of a last, a last support movable toward and from said devices, counter clamping means located adjacent to the support in its position away from said devices, means for limiting outward movement of the clamping means to permit assembling of the upper and counter upon the supported last, said clamping means being arranged to be engaged by the rear end of the upper and last early in theirvmovement toward the securing devices curing devieesmnd means to lock thelast and clamp. against outward movement during operation of theseeui ing devices.
