This invention relates to fastening devices involving two stringers, each stringer having a series of projecting coupling elements arranged at one side edge thereof and adapted to be interengaged and interlocked by a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers in the movement of said slider in one direction and to be separated in the movement of the slider in the opposite direction; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of the class specified, the coupling elements of which are formed from strips of wi-re or other material, the end portions of which are pref- 15. taching strip preferably at spaced intervals in attaching said elements to the strip in the formation of said stringers and further in the forming of the central portion of said strips, coupling loops or members which pro# ject beyond the edge ofthe mounting strip and upon which the slider is movable; a further objectbeing to provide a device of the class'specifed wherein a folded mounting strip may be employed or a strip provided with one or more reinforcing cords or strands `arranged at the edge portionl to which the coupling elements are attached; a further object being to provide a device of the class specified wherein the side edges of the slider are free toride upon that part of the elements arranged upon the mounting strip thus eliminating the frictional wear on said strip which is commonly experienced in other de-l vices of this class; a still further object being to so arrange the end-portions of each element upon the mounting strip and with respect to adjacent elements as .to,provide a slight clearance space, permitting the free leXure of the mounting strip and said elements in the` use of the device; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device .of the class and for the pur` pose specilied which is simple -in construction, eflicient in use and whichl is constructed `as hereinafter described and claimed.

My present invention relates to separable fasteners of the general class, such for example as disclosed in a prior patent of the United States granted to me October 13, 1925, j and numbered 1,557 ,304. In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, I have indicated' at 10 and 10 the separate mounting strips'for the separate stringers of my improved device. These 80 .strips are composed of fabric of any kind or class and as shown in Fig. 2 consist of strips of fabric havingV woven therein'lcords or strands 11 and 11a arranged longitudinally of one side edge of each of the strips 10-10. However, these strips-may be formed with a strip 10h as seen in Fig. 8, or on the other hand a strip such as shown at 14 in Fig. 6, and 1.4* in Fig. 7 may be employed, the latterstrips o lbeing folded centrally and the free edges turned inwardly as seen at 14" to provide a neat and finishedA attaching edge to saidV strip's.
In my present invention, Iprovide each u strip 10-10a with a series of coupling elei ments 15-15 respectively,l the elements 15 differing only from the elements 15 in that the free end portions thereof are hook-shaped in form as seen at 15, note Fig. 1, to form 10 Vpiece such interlocking engagement with the elements 15 to prevent separation of the separate stringers formed by the strips 10-10". For this reason, the brlef description of one of the elements 15---15 will apply to both.
In forming these elements a strandor strip of 'wire or other material is preferably cut to a predetermined length to form a workas indicated at 16 .in Fig. 4 of the drawing, the shearing of the workpiece being such as to form pointed ends 16. This workpiece is fashioned centrally by a suitable machine or in any other desired manner to partially form a loop 17 therein and to arrange the pronged ends 16a in angularly disposed relation t9 the adjacent part of the strip, and when so arranged and formed the pronged ends are moved toward each other and passed through the mounting strip l0-10, one end passing upwardly through the strip and theother downwardly there through as will be apparent.
As viewedin Fig. 3 of the drawing, the pronged end passing downwardly through the strip 10 designated by the reference 18 is of greater length than the pronged end 19 passed upwardly through the strip so as to pierce the strip 10 at spaced intervals thus preventing the rupturng of said strip. After piercing the strip, the pronged ends are bent and pressed upon the strip in the manner clearly seen in Fig. 2 of the'drawing. In this operation, it will beunderstood that the strip 10-10"L as well as the strand 11--11n will be `compressed and the end ortions 18 and 19 will form a relatively at bearing surface -upon which the side edges 2O of a coupling slider 21 are adapted to operate.
It will alsobe noted that in the operation of compressing the ends 18 and 19, the loop portions 17 of the respective devices 15--15 will be completely formed and the cross section of the channel or channels of the slider 21 will be fashioned to conform with the separate members 15-'15Mand said members collectixgeiyf when coupled, especially at the forward or contracted end 21a of the slider. The slider 21 is more or less of conventional form, being ofthe unit cast type and employing the usual finger piece 22 movable longitudinally of a T-shaped elbow 23 arranged upon the central top portion of the slider.
In attaching the separate elements 15-15 to their'respective mounting strips 10-10*-,
y it is preferred although not absolutely essential, that the ends 18--19 of one element be spaced toa very slight degree from the corresponding end of adjacent elements to provide freeviexure of the complete stringers and especially of that part of the stringers to which the elements 15--15a are attached. This clearance space is exaggeratedly shown at 24 in Fig. 3 of the drawing. It will be understood that the length of the parts 18 and`19 upon the strips 10--10a may be varied to suit the requirements in different types of devices ofthe class under consideration and 'especially the use thereof, but it is Vpreferred that said ends be comparatively short in 'order to produce in the completed device, a
neat and finished appearance and to reduce the transverse dimensions of the interengaged coupling elements as they appear when coupled together. In this connection, the size of the loops 17 may also be varied to suit the different uses of the device.
In Fig. 6 of the drawing, the structure shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive is modified solely in the provision of the different type Yof mounting strip, the cords or strands 11--11a being omitted. In Fig. 7 of the drawing the structure shown in Fig. 6 is modified simply in the formation of the loop 17 which instead of being substantially circular in form, is fashioned to form an outer semi-circular portion 17 joining the ends 18a-19a in relatively straight vertical portions 17b forming thereof square shoulders upon which the side edges of the slider are adapted to move, it being understood that the slider will be fashioned to conform with the cross sectional contour of the coupling elements shown in Fig. 7 of the drawing.
In Fig. 8 of the drawing, I have shown another modification wherein a strip 10b has the cords or strands 12 and 13 therein or coupled therewith in any desired manner, and in this construction, it is preferred that one of the ends of the separate elements, for example, the end 19", be arranged to pierce the strip 1()b inwardly of the inner strand 13, whereas the end 18b be arranged to pierce the stri 10b inwardly of the strand 12 and outwar ly of the strand 13, or in other words, between said strands.
It will be understood thatd while I have shown certain forms ofl coupling elements and have indicated specific manners of attaching the same to the mounting strips of the separate stringers, that my invention is not necessarily limited to the structures herein shown and described, nor am I limited to the specific manner of forming the separate coupling elements, and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may bemade within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z-f 1. A. slide fastener device. comprising 'a pair of stringers, each of said stringers consisting of a mounting strip and a plurality of coupling elements of loop form arranged in juxtaposition longitudinally of one' side edgeL of 'said strip, the coupling elements of one Stringer interlocking with theelements one sideedge of said strip,
the edge of said strip and belng arranged in longitudinally spaced relation.
2. A slide fastener device comprising a pair of stringers, each of said stringers consisting of a mounting strip, and a plurality of coupling elements of loop form arranged in juxtaposition,longitudinally of one side edge of said strip, the coupling elements of oneV stringer interlocking with the elements of a companion Stringer and being coupled and uncoupled by a slider movable longitudinally of said stringers, th elements of each Stringer having portions piercing said strip in attach-` ing the same thereto, said elements projecting from the edge of said strip and being arranged in longitudinally spaced relation, portions of said elements being of greater transverse dimensions than the thickness of said strip, and the portions of said elements attached to the strip being of different lengths whereby said portions will at spaced intervals.

A slide fastener of the class described, comprising amounting strip, a plurality of coupling elements arranged longitudinally of one side edgeV of said strip, said elements having loop portions `of greater transverse dimensions than the thickness of said strip, and projecting beyond the free edge of the strip, each element terminating in end porplercingsaid strip and lying snugly thereupon.
4. A slide fastener of the class described,

coupling elements arranged longitudinally of one side edge of said strip, said elements having loop portions of greater transverse dimensions than the thickness of said strip and projecting beyond the freeedge of the strip and terminating in end portions piercing said strip and lying snugly thereupon, said end portions being arranged on opposite side faces of lthelfstrip and the end thereof projecting andi being compressed upon the opposed faces of the strip.

A slide fastener device of the class described comprising two stringers, each of said stringers consisting of a mounting strip to one side edge of which is4 attached a plurality of substantially similar coupling elements, means whereby the elements of one strip will interengage and interlock with the elements of a companion strip in forming said device, each of said coupling elements spaced relation with reference to each other and being of greater transverse dimensions than the corresponding dimensions of the compressed end portions thereof. j

A slide fastener device of the class described comprising twostringers, each of said stringers consisting of a mounting strip to one side edge of which is attached a plurality of coupling elements, means whereby the. elements of one strip will interengage and interlock with the elements of a companion strip in forming said device, each of said coupling elements having attached end portions plercing said strip inwardly of the edge thereof and in spaced relation with reference to each other and being compressed onto the strip in securing the elements thereto, the unattached portions of said elements .A 't' b dthd f'dtl d` 5. A device of the class described comprising a plurality of independently formed Wire loop elements having pronged end portions, a mounting memberto one edge of which said elements are adapted,` to be attached, the ronged ends of said elements piercing said) member inwardly ofthe edge thereof and extendin through said member and being compressed upon both side faces thereof in coupling said elements therewith, the loop portions of said elements projecting beyond the edge o'f said member and being of greater transverse dimensions than the corresponding dimensions of the attached end portions of said elements, and a lreinforcing strand arranged in the edge portion of said member, to which said elements are attached.

A separable fastener of the class described comprising two stringers, each Stringer consisting of a mounting strip and a plurality of coupling elements arranged and spaced longitudinally of one side edge of said strip, each of said coupling elements being fashioned from a relativel thin band, the central portion of which is ashioned to form a coupling loop having projecting, pronged, end portions, said pronged end portions bein disposed at oplposite sides of the strip an pierced thei'et rough at spaced intervals, and compressed onto the stri to form attachig portions lying iat an snugly upon opposite faces of said strip and ofless transverse dimensions than the corresponding dimensions of Said coupling loops, and the coupling loops of the elements of one Stringer being spaced apart a distance equal to the thickness of the elements of the companion strip, whereby when said stringers are coupled together, the coupling elements of one Stringer are in abutting and interlocked relation with respect to the elements of thev other Stringer.

A device of the class described comprisinga mounting strip, one side edge of whichis provided with a reinforcing strand imbedded therein, a pluralit of wire loop elements having pronged, en portions attached to the reinforced edge of said strip, said pronged, end portions piercing the strip in# wardly of said strand from opposite side faces thereof, and being compressed onto the strip and said strand to securely retain said elements against movement with respect to said strip, the loop portions of said elements projecting beyond the edge of said strip and being of greater transverse dimensions than the corresponding dimensions of the attached portions of said elements.
a slider movable along said stringers in coupling and uncoupling the same, and the side edges of said slider being arranged to operate over said parts and to engage said projecting portions in drawing the stringers ltogether.
