Description

JLROLEY. NOSE-RING.
Patented May '2, 18 76 WZ/iwavw.
W mam UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE ROLEY, 0F HEBRON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN NOSE-RINGS;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,891, dated May February 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, JESSE RoLEY, of Hebron, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Appliances 7 for Ringing Hogs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents, in perspective, my ringing instrument, with the ring or jewel in place therein, ready to be inserted and fastened in the animals nose. ,Fig. 2 represents, in perspective, one of the blanks, ready to be placed in the jaws of the inserting instrument. My invention relates, first, to a ring or jewel of peculiar construction, it being composed of two separate pieces of wire, one of which is a roller, and the other the means of fastening said roller to the nose of the animal,
so that, in rooting, the roller portion may turn upon the ring portion.
To enable 'others to make and use my in yention, I proceed to describe the same in connection with the drawings, as follows:
First, a roller, a, is formed, which is wound of wire around a former of any kind. Through this roller, which is open through \he center for that purpose, is passed a wire, which is bent up at b to hold the roller in place, then extended far enough to forrn a ring of proper diameter, and finally curved around, as at c, and made sharp enough to penetrate the nose 2, 1876; application filed of the animal. This makes the blank out of which the ring is finally made. made as shown at Fig. 2, is then placed between the jaws A B of the clinching or ring- In this position the ring is ready to be inserted in the nose of the animal by simply closing the handles 0 of the ringing instrument.
When, by closing the jaws A B, the points of the wire come against the jaw B, they take into grooves n n, formed therein, and the ends are turned in close to the roller a, or underneath it, and so two rings are formed, both passing through the nose of the animal, and both rings connected by a straight bar upon which the roller a is free to turn.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is A ring or jewel for hogs noses, composed of a roller, a, of wound wire, and straps or side pieces b c, as'and for the purpose described and represented.
JESSE ROLEY.
