Description
. atented July l, 1930 STATES PATENT OFFICE Application led March 27, 1929. Serial No. 350,212.
My invention relates to furnace wall construction and more particularly to a double furnace wall including spaced wall portions and bonding blocks for interlocking the wall portions in spaced relation.
The principal object of the present invention is to permit contraction and expansion of the interlocked wall portions relative to each other.
A further object of the invention is to provide for circulation of air through the interlocking layers between the sections of a wall.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Fig. 3 isa detail perspective view of a filler block for use with the bonding blocks.
Referring in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a double furnace wall including an inner wall 2 for enclosing burners,
boilers and the like and subject to expansion and contraction due to the heat of the burner,
and spaced from an outer enclosing wall 3 to form an air space or passage 4 between the walls so that air passing to the burner is conducted through the air space and tends to cool the inner wall.
The inner wall 2 comprises a plurality of` horizontal sections 5 composed of layers of standard fire brick 6 laid lengthwise with thickness of the wall, the vsections being separated by horizontal bonding layers or sections 7 composed of my improved bonding blocks 8 and 'filler blocks 9 presentlydescribed. r
The bonding block 7 includes a substantially rectangular shaped body 10 of greater length than the standard brick 6, and having flat top and bottom surfaces 11 and 12 and flat side faces 13 and 14 tapered longitudinal- Vly and inwardly from the end 15 to a point 16 adjacent the end face 17 and forming a wedgeyblock is used in the outer wall 3 like portion 18 and tapered outwardly from the point 16 to form lateral interlocking jaws 19 on a head portion 20. The wedge portion 18 is equal in length to the standard brick6 and the blocks are adapted to be laid on the brick sections in horizontally spaced relation for receivingthe filler blocks 9, and witlL the ends 15 in flush alignment with the innerface of the wall so that the interlocking jaws of the head portion protrude from the wall for engagement with bonding blocks in the outer wall .as hereafter described.

The filler block 9 comprises a wedge shaped body 22 equal in thickness to` the bonding block l7 and equal'in length ,to the standard 70 brick 6.
.The filler block is provided with fiat end surfaces 23 and '24 for alignment with surfaces of the wall, and with tapered side faces 25 conforming to the tapered side faces 13 75 and 14 of the bondingblocks, wherebythe filler block is adapted to fit snugly between bonding blocks for binding the blocks 1n the wall structure. Formed inthe top side 26 of the filler block 80 and adjacent the end 23 are a recess 27 and a connecting groove 28 for receiving the head and shank portions of a bolt 29 when the presently described.
The outer enclosing wall 3 is composed of a plurality of horizontal sections 30 each consisting of layers of standard lire brlck lald lengthwise with the length of the wall and capped by a layer of the bonding blocks 7 and 90 filler blocks 9.
The sections 30 correspond in height tothe sections 5 of the inner wall and thebonding blocks 7 are offset horizontally so that the head portions of the blocks in the inner wall and the-tapered jaws 19 serve to restrain the members from sideward shifting, and to permit vertical shifting movement between the members caused by contraction and expansion of the wall.
A steel frame work`is constructed outside and consists of vertical I-beams or buck stays 31 in abutment with the suface of the wall and connected by horizontal paired angle bars 32. The bars 32 are ositioned in parallel alignment with the onding layers and spaced apart for receivin the bolts 29 connected with the filler bloc s. Washers 33 and nuts 34 are applied on the bolts for securing the filler blocks against displacement from the outer wall.
When the wall is completely assembled'as heretofore described, the outer wall is reinforced and retained by the steel frame' work and the bonding blocks 9 serve to provide an interlocking connection between the outer wall and the inner wall, whereby the inner wall is also reinforced against horizontal s ide strains caused by contraction and expansion due to its subjection to the heat of' combustion.
It is to be particularly noted that while the bonding blocks interlock and prevent sidward shifting or tilting of the wall portions, the vertical sliding fit between the head portions 20 ofthe blocks permits the inner wall 2 to expand and contract vertically with relation to the wall portion 3 and its brick layers and sections may move relatively to the substantially unmoved outer wall and without affecting the horizontal bond between the wall portions.
What I claim and desire ters Patent is:
1. In a furnace wall of the character described including spaced walls formed of horizontal sections, wall-connecting means including a series of tapering locking blocks spacing filler blocks spacing the locking blocks in each series, the locking blocks in each wall having divergin jaws `projecting toward the opposite wall a apted for interlockin engagement with the jaws of locking bloc s in said opposite wall to form a partition across the spacing between said walls, and being provided with apertures for passage of air through the partition.

In a structure of the character described includin a vertical support and a wall including orizontal sections, wall-retaining means including a series of tapering blocks spacing said sections, tapering filler blocks spacing the locking blocks' and anchored t ereby, a selected fil erblock being provided with a socket, and a retainer englageable in said socket and connected with t e support. 5. In a furnace. wall of the character described including spaced independently supported walls formed of horizontal sections, wall-connecting means including a series of tapering locking blocks spacing the sections of each wall, and tapering filler blocks spacing the locking blocks in each series, the locking blocks in each wall having yportions projecting toward the opposite wall for interlocking engagement with similar portions of locking blocks in the o posite wall.
6. Ina furnace wal of the character described, spaced outer and inner walls including horizontal sections, and a series of wed eshaped alternately oppositely directedbloc s acin the sections of each wall, selected b ocks in each series having portions projecting. across the space between the walls and engaged with similarly projecting portions of blocks in an opposite wall to form a horizontal partition, said projecting portions being provided with apertures for passage of air through the partition.
