Description

B. F. FLINT.
LAMP-BURNER. No'.176,850. Patented May 2,1876. v
N-PETERS, PHOTOLITNOQRAFNER. WASHINGTON. l7v C- UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN FLINT, OF WESTFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,850, dated May 2, 1876; application tiled March 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. FLINT, of Westfield, in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Burner, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view; and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same on line a; 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide the burners of coal-oil and other lamps with an improved device for removing the snuff or burned part of the lamp-wicks, in convenient manner, without extinguishing the light and requiring the taking off of "the chimney; and
' the invention consists of a spring and hook shaped cutter or shade, that is carried by a suitable lever device over the same.
In the drawing, A represents a lamp-burner, of any suitable construction; 0, the Wick-tube, and B a flat hook-shaped blade or cutter, that is arranged to pass across the upper end of the wick-tube, so as to remove or cut off the snuff or burned parts of the Wick. The snuffing-bladeB is formed at the upper end of a bent lever, B, that passes by its middle part vertically through the perforated bottom plate of the same, andis then .bent outwardly, and
carried several times over the wick afterthe same has been turned down, so that the burned part only projects above the wick-tube, the snuii'er removing the burned part of the wick evenly, without extinguishing the blaze and without removing the chimney. The wick may thus be freed of the burned portions at any. moment in a very neat and convenient manner, and thereby a clearer and brighter light obtained. The irregular cutting of the wick and the unequal flame and cracking of the chimney are also avoided by this simple attachment.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The combination, with wick-tube, of the flat hook-shaped and swinging blade B, provided with a superposed spring, D, the whole arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
