Hitherto it has been customary to rely upon the skill of the operator to feed the Work at the correct point in the revolution of the rolls, for which purpose a chalkmark or other distinguishing mark is usuallyplacedon the rolls and the Work is fed when the mark attains a specified position. According to the present invention, however, a feed apparatus is 1 provided and is driven synchronouslywith the rolls through a clutch or like device which is operative to beginto drive the feed apparatus at only one definite point in a revolution of the rolls,
and this point, which may be adjustable, is predetermined so that the feed apparatus moves the work into the gate or gap between the rolls at preciselyv the desired moment when the rolls are in the proper relative position to receive the work. By such means the waste due to errors in skill and in judgment are obviated and as it is possible greatly to increase the speed of the rolls a very much greater output is obtained from the mill. r
In a convenient construction a roller ca- 40 pable ofmoving work supported thereon and hereinafter referred to as a feed roller is mount-ed'on an axis parallel with those of the rolls and is normally stationary. The rolls illustrated comprise a lower cylindrical roll 4 and anrupper roll 5 which is eccentric to its axis of rotation or,'as illusa rated, is specially shaped forthe rollingoi a particular form in which the shape of cross section is not uniform throughout the length of the bar such as aknee-bar or brake lever bar used in the construction of railway wagone. The rolls 4 and 5 are suitably mounted and driven in housings 6 and itwill be appreciated that the gate or gap between them varies in size as the rolls revolve. V l
It is therefore necessary for the work to e befed at a definite point in a revolution of the rolls 4 and 5 and in carrying outthe present invention a feed roller 7 is mounted be tween bearings; 8 and 9 with its axis-ad acent to, and parallel with, those of the rolls 4 and lee 5 and with its upper surface at about the level of the gate or gap between the rolls 4 and 5. The spindle 10 of the feed roller 7 is extended beyond one of the bearings 9 and is preferably supported in another bearing 11.
A clutch member 12 is rotatably mounted on the spindle 10 of the feed roller 7 between the bearings 9 and 11 and is continuously driven from one of the rolls 4 and 5 at the same speed as the rolls and in the same sense as the lower one 4. In the example illustrated the clutch -member12 is fitted with a toothed wheel 13 meshing with another toothed wheel 14 of the same size,the toothed wheel 14 being driven by a chain 15 from the spindle of the upper shaped roll 5. The sprockets of the chain 15 being of the same diameter the clutch member 12 will be driven at the same speed as the rolls 4 and 5 and in the correct sense. The bearings of the toothed wheel 14 may conveniently be provided by extensions of the bearings 9 and 1'1 of the feed roller.
A second clutch member '16 is keyed or similarly mounted on the spindle '10 so as to slide thereon, and is caused thus to slide by means of an operating lever 17 fulcrumed at 18 and having an engagement with a groove 19 cut in the circumference of the clutch member 16. 3
The two clutch members 12 and 16 have each only a single engaging dogor projection 20 and 21 respectively. Normally the feed roller 7 is stationary, the clutch member 16 being in a position, illustrated in the drawing, in which its engaging dog 21 is free of the dog 20 of the clutch member 12. As there is only a single engagingdog-on each clutchmember it will "be understood that when the sliding one 16 is moved to'the operative position there is only one point in the path of the revolving dog 20 at which the sliding one 21 is engaged, and this'point, which may be adjusted by turning the feed roller by hand, corresponds to a definite point in the revolution of'the shaped rolls 4 and 5 since the latter rotate at the same speed as the clutch member 12.
Any desired means may beprovided for turning the feed roller by hand to adjust the point at which the dogs 20 and 21 engage. In the construction illustrated a circular ratchet 22 is'keyed to or formed on the feed 1 roller 7 and is engaged by a detent 23 operated by a hand lever 24 fulcrumed by a strap 25 embracing the feed roller 7.
The feed roller 7 is fitted with guide collars 26 opposite the operative portions of the rolls 4 and 5. These guide collars are intended to grip the edges of work placed between them, for which purpose their adjacent faces may be inclined and roughened as indicated in the drawing. The guide collars 26 are preferably adjustable on the feed roller 7 to suit the size of work to be fed to the rolls and to be opposite the desired gate or gap between the rolls 4 and 5 when the latter are formed with more than one operative surface. For this purpose the collars 26 may be divided and clamped on to the feed roller 7 as indicated in Figure 3.
A movable stop 27, which may be adjustable, is fitted so that it may be brought between the feed roller 7 and the rolls 4 and 5, and be withdrawn "from that position. In the construction 'illustratedthestop' 27 is "carried by rollers 28 running on rails 29 fitted between the housings 6 and a handle 30 is provided for moving the stop 27 along the rails 29.
Means areprovided "for indicating when the feed roller 7 is at'agi-ven position. For this purpose a scale 31 may be marked on thefeed-roller adj acen't to the bearing Sand a pointer 32 be carriedby the bearing to coact with the scale'31.
In operation the feed roller 7 is turned into a pre-determined posit-ion, indicated by the pointer 32 and scale 31 by reciprocating the lever 24, the work is caused to be gripped by the guide collars 26 with one end against the stop 27 which is brought opposite the gate or gap between'the'operati ve portions of the rolls 4 and 5. 'lVhen the work isthus adj usted thestop27 isremoved and the sliding clutch member 16 moved to theengaging po sition by means ofthe lever 17. When the dog 20 engages the dog--21 the feed roller 7 will rotate and carry the work into the gapbetween the rolls 4 and'5, which will then be at a definite point of a revolution determined by the adjusted position of the feed "roller 7. The correct position for the feed roller"? may be ascertained by dis-connecting the power from the rolls 4 and 5-and'reversing the feed operation, the rolls'being turned'in the reverse direction and allowance being made forthe thickness-orextent of the- dogs 20 and 21.
