CARRIERS FOR BARRELS, BOXES, &c.
No.176,339. Patented April 18, I876.
NPETERS. PHOTO-TIMER, WISHINGTON. D C.
UNITE-D STATES PATENT QFFIG'E.
NATHANIEL OAK, OF EXETER, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIERS FOR BARRELS, BOXES, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,339, dated April 18, 1876; application filed March 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NATHANIEL OAK, of Exeter, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers for Barrels, Boxes, 85c. and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the-same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in whicha Figure 1 shows a perspective of my invention Fig. 2, a modification of hook or grapple.
Same letters show like parts.
My invention consists of a frame of suitable material, inclosing the article to be carried, which frame is provided with handles, in pairs, at each end, and with hooks or grapples, by which the article is supported. This frame may be made adjustable in relation to its width, to accommodate barrels or boxes varying in size, and may also be provided with eyebolts or rings at the corners, for the reception of the hooks of a tackle when the article is to be hoisted. The grapples may, of course, be adapted in form to the article for which the carrier is especially designed. In some cases, hooks or grapples attached to the handles by a single eyebolt, in such a manner as to allow them to swing lengthwiseof the handles, will be found preferable. This form is of great advantage in carrying articles upstairs, as the swing of the hooks will allow the barrel or other article to retain a perpendicular position, irrespective of the inclination of the handles.
Referring to the drawing, a shows the frame, consisting of. side pieces b I), provided with handles 0. These side pieces are connected by cross-barsff, which, as before stated, may be so attached to said side pieces as to enable the distance between them to be varied-as by passing said cross-bars into and through luortises in the side pieces, as at g, and securing them in the desired position by pins h. At the corners i i i i of the frame a eyebolts or rings] may be placed, for hoisting purposes. At It is shown one kind of grapple, in form like the letter X, attached at the middle of the side pieces at two points,l l, and forked at the bottom, its lower end being provided with hooks, to catch and hold under the barrel or other article to be carried. This form, as stated, may be varied as circumstances dictate. The modification of the hook or grapple, before referred to, is shown at m, attached to the side pieces at one point only, to allow the article to retain always a perpendicular position.
The operation of my device will be readily understood. The hooks or grapples being placed under the article, it may be readily raised and transported by means of the handles e, the surrounding frame serving to steady it in its motions.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a carrying-frame, provided with handles 6 e, and inclosing the article to be carried, with hooks or grapples sustaining said article, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The frame 0, consisting of side pieces I) b, having handles 6 0 adjustable upon the crossbars ff of said frame, as and for the purposes specified.
3. The frame a, inclosing the article to be carried, and provided with rings or eyebolts at its corners, as and for the described purposes.
4. The carrying-frame inclosing the article to be carried, and provided with handles 6 e, in combination with the swinging books or grapples m m, substantially as shown and described, for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of February, 1876.
NATHANIEL OAK.
