UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
WILLIAM H. HAMPTON, OF LURAY, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAT-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,303, dated April 18, 1876; application filed February 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WLLLIAM H. HAMP- TON, of Lura-y, in the county of Page and.
State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Hat-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation; Fig. 2, crosssectional elevation.
The invention relates to a mode of securing a gentlemans hat while in church, so that he will be no longer compelled to hold it, place it on an uncleanly floor, or deposit it on the seat, where it is liable to be crushed. It consists in applying to the back of pews a wire holder, that is capable, by a rotary movement, of being placed under the seat in front, being thus both out of the way and not at all liable to become soiled or injured.
A represents a pew-seat, to the back of which is secured, by screw a, the plate B haveeee a ing the nut b. In the latter turns the screwend 0 of the wire 0, that has a ring, 0 to receive the hat. This wire is also bent at 0 passed through the staple c and again bent to form the stop 0 The stop 0 will prevent the wire from turning more than a half revolution. The ring a is made to suit any size of hat, and may be soldered Where connected. The wire will be about three-sixteenths of an inch in cross-section, and will work about one-eighth of an inch from back of pew, being made of copper, brass, or iron.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The wire 0, endthreaded at 0, having hatring 0, bent at 0 and having stop 0, in combination with a staple, c and nut-plate B 11, both attached to back of pew, as and for the purpose described.
