The present invention pertains in general to table structures and more particularly to a combination support and closure for ironing machines.
I Our invention is particularly useful in connection with the roller and presser shoe type of ironing machine such as that disclosed in our co-pending patent application Serial No. 115,820 filed June 14, 1926. In
fact, the present subject matter has been divided from the aforesaid patent application.
In general, we propose to provide a novel table structure comprisingv a support for the machine and a table cover or closure member pivotally attached to the support and adapted to telescope a part of the upper portion of the support. The structure of our invention also includes stop means for limiting the movement of the table cover about its pivot as well as reinforcing means for the support ada ted to resist the strains upon the support y the ironing machine.
Other objects and advantages of our invention will more fully appear from the following detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate one embodiment thereof and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a table structure embodying the features of our invention;

The support 11 includes a part comprisin a machine bed designated generally by t e reference character 12 and a plurality of 'legs 13 for supporting the said bed. There are preferably four legs 13 and each comprises a right an le bar cut to a predetermined length. he upper end of each leg 13 is secured to the correspondin corner of'the machine bed 12 by means 0 suitable rivets 14. Also, the lower end of each leg 13 is equipped with a caster 15 for facilitating the propelling of the table structure from one place to another. Each 'pair of legs 13 is connected by a cross member 16 and the two cross members are interconnected by means of a longitudinal tie rod 17 The cross members 16 are preferably made of angle iron and the tie rod 17 is preferably made of rectangular shaped iron rod.
. The machine bed 12 is rectangular in shape and is preferably made of sheet iron. The top. of this bed is provided with an arcuate depressed portion 20 which extends longtudinally of the support 11. This concave or depressed portion 20 is adapted to receive the ironed articles as they leave W this machine of our invention.
As clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4, the bed is formed of a single sheet of mate- 6. erring now to the drawin s in detail rial and is of channel section both longitudinally and transversely. The arms of legs 13 are riveted at 14 to the side and end flanges of the bed, as illustrated, reinforcing the bed structure, the table formed of the bed structure and associated parts possessing great strength and being of light weight.
One end of the to of the machine bed 12 (Fig. 3) is provi ed with a rectangular opening 21 designed to receive the housing of the operating mechanism for the machine as is fully shown in our previously mentioned co-pending patent application. This opening 21 is positioned ad acent an end of the areuate depressed portion 20 as is obvious in Fig. 3. Also, the top of the member 12 is provided with another opening 22 disposed between the ends of the support 11. Opening 22 is adapted to rece ve the operating mechanism associated wlth the presser o the ironing machine.
Extending longitudinally of the support 11 and fastened to the under side of the top of the bed 12 is a reinforcing member 24, the construction of which is clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7. This member 24 preferably comprises a cast iron casting. The situation of this casting 24 with respect to the bed 12 is alongside a portion of the depressed portion 20 between the openings 21 and 22. The bolts 25 shown in Fig. 3 serve to secure the casting 24 to the top of the bed 12 and also serve for the present purpose to indicate the location of this casting with respect to the top of the bed. The reinforcing member 24 is also secured to one side wall or flange of the bed structure and to one of the legs 13, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The purpose of this casting is to prevent the bed from sagging between the two openings 21 and 22 from the strain imposed upon it by the ironing machine.
In addition to being resistant to strain,
. the casting 24 also servesas a mounting for a number of parts of the ironing machine. For example, as shown in Fig. 7, the casting is provided with a: pair of mounting brackets 27 and 28 to which the motor for operating the machine is fastened. Moreover, one end of the eastin 24 is provided with a pair of bearing port1ons29 and 30 located below the opening 22 in the top of the bed.
These bearing portions serve as journals for' the lower end ofthe operating arm associated with the presser of the ironing machine. In fact, as disclosed in our aforesaid patent application, the operating shaft for actuatin the presser shoe extends through the ournals 29 and 30. This operating shaft as disclosed in the co-pending application extends alongside of the casting 24 into the casing associated with opening 21. Thus it will be evident that the casting 24 not only serves as a reinforcing medium but also serves as a mounting for the mechanism associated with the operating arm of the ironing shoe.
The table top or cover 10 comprises a pair of sides 31 and a pair of ends 32. The sides 31 are connected by the ends 32 positioned between the sides. Secured to the top of the sides and ends is a table top 34 which Also,
may be fastened thereto by any suitable means. The ends, sides and the top are preferably of a panel type construction so as to furnish the table cover with maximum rigidity. Then, too, this panel construction en ances the appearance of the table top 10.
The lower edges of the sides 31 are pref erably beaded as indicated at 35 in Fig. 4. These beaded edges 35 are adapted to rest upon the top of the machine bed 12. The lower edges of the ends 32 are provided with shoulders 36 the purpose of which will be explained hereinafter. It will be noted that the ends are substantially wider than the sides of the table top and that the ends 32 fit over the ends of the bed 12. In other words, the table top is partially telescoped by the top of the bed 12.
Also secured to each end 32 is a reinforcing panel 38 provided with an inwardly turned edge 39. The edge 39, as Will be more fully explained hereinafter, is adapted to co-operate with an angular member 40 secured to the top of the support to limit the swinging movement of the table cover 10 about its pivots. Each of the angular members 40 is secured to the top of the bed 12 by means of a bolt 41 (Fig. 3).
Each end 32 of the top 10 is provided with a pivot plate 44 suitably fastened thereto. Each of these plates 44 has an elongated aperture 45 through which a pivot pin 46 extends. The pivot pins 46 are suit-- ably connected to the ends of the machine bed 12. The table top or cover 10 is adapted to be swung about the pivot pins 46 into a position such as that illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 4. Obviously, when the table cover 10 is in the horizontal position illustrated in Fig. 4 access may be had to the mechanism connected to the support 11.

Of course,it is to be understood that if no provision was made for the angular members 40 the beaded edge 35 of the previously mentioned side 31 would abut the associated side of the support 12 as is evidenced from Fig. 4. By providing the angular members 40 we limit the movement of the table top about its pivot without the necessity of its edge coming into contact with the polished Side of the support and thus prevent any possibility of the surface of the support being marred or scratched thereby.
Now we desire it to be understood that although we have described our invent on as being particularly useful in connection with ironer mechanism, the invention is not to be thus limited but only in so far as defined by the scope and spirit of the appended claims.
We claim 1. In combination, a support for a machine and the like, a table top co-\ perable with the said support to enclose the machine, said table top being movable to afford access to the machine, said support including a top provided with a depressed portion adapted to receive articles as they leave the machine, and having an opening at one end for receiving a housing of the machine, and reinforcing member fastened to the underside of said support alongside said depressed portion and adjacent said opening.
2. In combination, a support for a machine and the like including a machine bed carried by a plurality of legs, a table top co-operable with the said support to enclose the machine, said table top being movable to afford access to the machine, said support including a top provided with a depressed portion adapted to receive articles as they leave the-machine and having an opening disposed substantially centrally of the support, and a reinforcing member extending alongside said opening for reinforcing the support at this point.
3. In combination, a bed structure, a cover therefor having end members pivoted to the ends of the bed structure, reinforcing members secured to the end members, and stop members secured on the bed structure, the reinforcing members having elements disposed for contact with the stop members to limit opening movement of the cover.
4. In combination, a bed structure, a cover therefor having end members pivoted to the ends of the bed structure, stop members secured to the bed structure, and reinforcing panels secured to the end members and having angularly disposed elements disposed to 'contact with said stop members to limit opening movement of the cover.
5. In combination, a bed structure for ironers and like machines and including a rectangular sheet metal plate having its ends and sides bent downwardly and forming with the plate a structure of channel section both longitudinally and transversely, the
central portion of the plate being of concavo-convex section with the concavity extending to one end of the plate, and angle leg members fitting into the corners of said structure and having their arms secured to the side and end walls of the'bed structure.
6. In combination, a bed structure including a sheet metal plate having its central portion of concavo-convex cross-section, supporting member secured to said plate, and a reinforcing member extending along the under face of the plate adjacent one side thereof, said member being adapted to support mechanisms mounted thereon for cooperation with the bed structure.
7 In combination, a bed structure includinga sheet metal plate having its central portion of concavo-convex cross-section, supporting members secured to said plate, and a reinforcing member extending along the under face of the plate adjacent one side thereof and secured to certain of said supporting members.
8. In combination, a bed structure including a sheet metal plate having its central portion of concavo-convex cross-section, said plate being provided with an opening in one end and an opening in one side adjacent said concavo-convex portion for accommodation of mechanisms associated with the bed structure, supporting members secured to the bed structure, and a reinforcing member secured to certain of said supporting members and extending along the under face of the plate adjacent said openings, the reinforcing member being adapted to support associated mechanisms extending through said side opening through the .plate.
9. In combination, a bed structure for ironing machines and the like and comprising a substantially rectangular plate havin its sides and ends turned downwardly anc l forming with the plate a structure of channel section both longitudinally and transversely, the central portion of the plate being of concavo-convex section forming a concavity in the upper face of the plate and extending to one end thereof, and supporting means secured to said plate.
10. In combination, a bed structure for ironing'machines and the like and comprising a substantially rectangular plate having its sides and ends turned downwardly and forming with the plate a structure of channel section both longitudinally and transversely, the central portion of the plate being of. concavo-convex section forming a concavity in the upper face of the plate and extending to one end thereof, and terminating short of the other end of the plate, and supporting means secured to said plate.
11, In combination, a bed structure for ironing machines and the like and comprising a substantially rectangular plate having its central portion of concavo-convex cross section forming a concavity in the upper face of the plate and extending to one end thereof, and supporting means secured to said plate.
12.
