Description

June 3, 1930.
R. o. HELGEBY AMMETER Filed May 28. 1928 Patented June 3, 1930 UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE RALPH HELGEBY, OF FLINT, 'mcmean, assrenon TO A o SPARK rLUe contrar OFFLIN'I', MICHIGAN, "A COMPANY OF. MICHIGAN AMMETER Application filed Kay 28, 1928 Serial 110. 281,098.
This invention relates to ammeters, and has particular reference to improvements relating to supporting means for the'various parts of the ammeter.
The invention has for its object to construct an ammeter which will have a combined conductor and supporting'means.'
The object pf, the invention isaccom-' plished by providing a U-shaped conductor or supporting frame having a pairoi laterally projectingwings at the legs of the U. The frame or conductor is secured to .the ammeter casing by means of bolts passing through the wings.
The U-shaped portion of the supporting frame is provided at the base of the U with a slot for. the reception of a unit on which is mounted the pointer swinging mechanism. At substantially the ends of the legs of the U a second slot is provided, in which a permanent magnet is mounted.
The outer portion of the base of the U is provided with studs or projections the purpose of which is to fasten the dial to the supporting'member.
On the -drawing,'Fig.ure 1, is a front view of the ammeter' of the invention with the dial broken away.
/ Figure 2, is a section on theline 2'-2".of Figure 1. I I Y Figure 3, is a rear view with parts broken away to better illustrate the'invention. Figure 4 is asection on the line 44 of Figure 1. g
indicates the casing of theammeter. At the outer rear portion -of the casing there is applied an insulating strip 12, while a second insulating strip is applied at the inside over the bottom 16, of the casing 10. Seated on the insulating strip 14, are the wings 18, and 20, of a supporting frame or conductor indicated as a whole at 22. Bolts-24 and 26, pass through openings in the wings 18 and 20, the insulating strips 12 and 14, and the bottom 16 of thecasing and are held in position. by means of the lock nuts 28 and 30. I The conductor or supporting frame 22, is shown as of generally U-shape, the U-shaped portion comprising the base-:32 and the legs Referring to the drawing, the numeral 10,"
34 and 36. At the inner portion of the base 32 there are provided the grooves or slots -38 extending at both sides of the legs 34 and 36 and in which slots there is supported the on which there is mounted the armature 50 a and the pointer .52.
Positioned substantially at the endsof the legs 34 and 36 of the U portion 22, is a second pair of co-operating grooves or slots 54 in which there is inserted the permanent magnet 56.
The plate portion 40 as well as the magnet 56 may be rigidly secured in their respective slots 38 and 54 either b a press fit, or by pinching the metal toget er at the groovesbaslg The 'ng is provided with the usual transparent or glass front 58, and the bezel ring 60 is secured over a flange 62 on the member 22 is provided'with the integral lugs or projections 64 and 66 which serve as a means for holding the dial rigidly on to the base of the supporting frame 22. The
dial is secured by riveting over the ends of the lugs 64 and'66.
By the structure of the invention as described it will be apparent that there has been provided a compact and secure arrangement for holding the venous parts of the ammeter in secure relations and that the conductor also serves as a supporting member. I
I claim:
1. In an ammeter, a conductor having a plurality of slots, a pointer swinging mechanism mounted-in one slot and actuated in response to the energization of said conductor, and a permanent magnet mounted in another slot and adapted tobias said mechanism' to its zero position.
2. In an ammeter, a U-shaped conductor net mounted at the end of legs of the U, a
pointer swinging unit mounted on the U,
and a, dial mounted at the base of the U by means of lugs inte gral with the'frame.
' 4:. In an'ammeter, a U-shaped sup orting frame, flanged wings'on the legs 0 the U by means of which the frameis secured to the casing, a pointer swinging mechanism mounted .on the inner side of the base of the U, a dial mounted by means of integral lugs on the outer side of the base of the U, and a permanent biasing magnet mounted at the end of the legs of the U.
5. In an ammeter, a U-shaped conductor having a slot at the base of the U and a slot at the extremity of each leg of the U,
a pointer swinging mechanism supported in' one of saidslots, a permanent ma net supported in the other slot, a dial, an integral In on said conductor by sa1d dial is secured to sa1d conductor.
' 6. In an'ammeter, a U-shaped supportingframe for mounting the ammeter parts, a pointer swinging mechanism mounted as a unit at the ase of the U, and a .magnet mounted on said frame at the ends of the legs of the U. I g
7; In an electric measuring instrument, a
U-shaped supporting 'frame, and pointer swinging mechanism separately constructed I and mounted at the base of and inclosed mechanism constructed as a uniti said mech;
- ends of the le s of the U. 65
within the U, and a magnet mounted at the ends of the legs of the U.
8. In an electric measuring-instrument, a'
frame having a plurality of grooves, a
pointer swinging mechanism constructed as a unit, sa1d mechamsm meludm said plate adapted to be received in some of sa1d grooves to rigidly mount the mecha- -nism,and a magnet mounted in' other of said rooves.
'9. ii an electric measuring instrument, a
U-shaped frame having a plurality of grooves inside the U, a pointer swinging anism including a plate mounte in some of said grooves to rigidly hold the mechanism,
means of which a pointer swinging mechanism mounted in one pair of said grooves, and a magnet mounted inanother pair of said grooves,
said magnet spaced from said insulation.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
