COMB
Filed July 17, 1929 EN WITNESS .2:
ATTORNEY BY Mk6.
Patented May 27, 1930 UNITED STATES HENRY J. RIES, OF IOWA. CITY, IOWA COMB Application filed July 17,
This invention relates to improvements in combs. a
More particularly, the invention relates to improvements in combs of the type that may be carried in a pocket, pocketbook, or handbag of the user, or may be made the part of a" toilet kit for traveling or the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a comb as above characterized that may be conveniently manipulated or folded to form a compact case of a durable character adapted to exclude dust and dirt.
It is also an object of the invention that the teeth forming the comb may be supported forseparate pivotal movement and thereby enable the comb to be substantially self-cleaning.
A further object of the invention is that for gripping the case will serve as a means and rigidly holding the teeth a comb. 7
Other objects of the invention relating to details of construction will appear in the detail description to follow. v
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a when folded, I
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the comb whenunfolded and ready for use,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the comb. at a time'whent-he case has been opened,
Figure/.tis a sectional view on line H of Figure 2, and
1 Figure 5 is a fragmentary'detail view when when used as perspective view of the comb looking at the teeth of the comb when unfolded or extended as in Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings more particularly 1O designates generally the supporting or bottom section of the comb case, and 11 the lid or top section therefor. v
i The bottom section of. the. case may be made of any suitable light and durable material and comprises an elongated rectangular plate with each end terminating in an upturned lip 12. The lid or top section 11 comprises an elongated rectangular plate with an edge portion suitably turned to form a 1929. Serial No. 378,976.
sleeve 13 adapted to fit between the sleeves 1% formed on the associated edge of the bottom section 10. A pintle pin or rod 15 is extended through the sleeves 13 andl land thereby providing a hinge for the'sections 10 and 1 i The lid 11 fits between the lips 12. The
and the bottom section and lid areshaped a in cross-section to correspond with'the shape of lips 12 as shown. The free or front edge of the lid is formed with a downwardly extending lip 16 which is serrated Fig. 5 to provide teeth 17 for the purpose of which will later'appear.
' rod or wire 18 is supported between the forwardends of the lips 12, said rod carrying a multiplicity of teeth 19.v Each toothcomprises. the usual shank portion tapering to a point at its outer'end. The inner end of each tooth is formed with a head 20 which is pierced with an opening adapted for looselyreceiving the rod 18. The teeth 19 are spaced by suitable washers 21. -The teeth arefree to swing upon the rod18 and rest upon the bottom section lowh'en not in use, or be swung to the position shown in Fig ures 2, 3 and 4 and rest upon anvupturned lip 22 formed along bottom section 10. v p
As shoWn in Figure 1, with the teeth 19 arranged to rest. upon the bottom. section 10, thelid 11 may be'closed andv its lip 16 seated upon the heads'of the teeth 19. In this way a compact and artistic comb case is provided. Also the comb is kept. free from dust anddirt. a r
. When it is'desired tousethe comb it is onlynecessary to lift the lid llIand permit the teeth 19 toswingoutwardly to their extended position as shown in Figures" 2, 3, and 4. hen in their extended position the teeth rest upon the upturned lip or flange22 and the lid is closed to bring its lip or flange 16 upon the teeth and allow; its serrated. edge 17 to engage the teeth for rigidly holds ing the same as shown in Figure 5. f
' When usingthe comb the case should be grasped between the thumb and forefinger as shown in and this causes the teeth to be gripped between the lid and bottom sections of the case. In this manner the teeth are rigidly held as long as the user grips the case as described.
It should be noted that with the teeth free for individual swinging movement, it is made possible to cause self-cleaning thereof. This is due to the movement between the teeth when folding or un'fo'lding'the same. V'lhis self-cleaning action is of value the appended claims.
I claim: 7 I 1. A comb comprising a case, and a multiplicity of separate and independent teeth 7 pivotallysupported by the case and capable of beingswung to an unseen position within thec'ase and also "capable of being swung to a position to extend from the case and serveto form a comb.
