SPRING BED-BOTTOM.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,605, dated June 16, 1857.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Dow, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful or Improved S ring Bedstead or Bed-Bottom; and I do ereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which* Figure 1 is a to view of it. Fig. 2 a central vertical and lbngitudinal section of it.

In these drawings A denotes a bedstead frame made in the ordinary manner, and provided with two series of pins or bearers, B, B, B, B B B each series being projected from one of the side rails a, a, of the said frame and in manner as shown in the drawings the rests, pins, or bearers of each series are disposed at equal distances asunder and support an elastic belt or india rubber band C or C laid upon and fastened to them, either by being fastened to each of them, or only to those at the ends of the series or such of them as may be deemed necessary.

Transverse slats D, D, D are placed on the elastic bands or springs and so as to extend from one to the other and be arranged between the pins or rests as shown in the figure. If desirable the slats or bars may be connected together by tapes or cords,

), fastened at their ends to the end rails c, c, or staples or eyes d, d, pro'ecting therefrom, Each transverse seat lD, will thus be supported by both elastic spring bands and when pressed downward it will rest on the spring so as to extend the same.- The contractile force of the spring will operate to elevate the slat.

From the above it will be seen that my improved spring bed bottom possesses the great merits of simplicity and cheapness of construction, and besides this it not only operates to good advantage when in use but is very durable, and not easy to become deranged or get out of repair.

I do not claim supporting a set of slats on springs arranged longitudinally in a bedstead or frame, but

What I do claim is- My improved spring bedstead or bed bottom as made with two series of rests or bearers, B, B', two elastic bands or belts C, C and a series of transverse bars or slats D, D, arranged together and in the bed frame substantially as described.
