This invention relates to an improvement in adjustable slicing knives for cutting meat, bread, cheese or the like in slices and consists therein that a shaft fastened to the knife is provided with a sliding block slidable and turnable on the shaft and provided with a guiding bar the inside of which is parallel to the knife blade and which guiding bar may be set at different distances from the blade of the knife.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 shows a knife provided with an arrangement according to the invention and seen from the side. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same knife. Fig. 3 shows the same knife with a modified form of the arrangement.
Theknife is of the usual form on the market, and in the drawing the handle is indicated by 1, 2 is the fastening or knife-ring and the blade.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, in the middle of the fastening ring is bored a horizontal hole 4, in which a shaft 5 is riveted. On the free end 19 of the shaft is a slidable block 8 to which is fastened a stop-arm 9 which rests against the baclt of the blade or the upper edge of the lrnife ring and may have that form shown in the drawing, as well as a guiding bar 10 the inner side 12 of which is parallel. with the length of the blade. The stop-arm has for its object to hold the sliding block with the guiding-bar in a certain position in relation to the knife-edge13 when the sliding block is actuated by a spring 11. This spring 11 is fastened at one end 14 to the shaft or to the fastening ring 2 and is wound around the shaft. Its other end 15 is fastened to the sliding block 8. When the spring is tensioned it thus forces the sliding block to turn downwards until the stop-arm 9 rests against the knife ring. The guiding bar is bent to the form shown in the drawing and is fastened by its ends 16 and 17 to the sliding block 8, but may of course also have another form.
In order that the guiding bar by its inner edge 12 may be set at different distances from the knife-blade the shaft 5 at its outer free end 19 is threaded and provided with an adjusting nut 20. When the nut 20 is tightened the slidin-g block 8 is moved along the shaft 5 in towards the knife edge, whereby the helical spring 11 is compressed. if the nut is screwed outwards the spring forces the sliding block outwards and the guiding bar on the sliding bar 8 is removed from the knife blade.
Another embodiment is shown 111 Fig. .3.
This embodiment is substantially like that described above, but here the stop-arm 9 is provided with vertically arranged grooves or ridges Ql, into which catches one end of a helical spring 11 wound around the shaft 5 carrying the sliding block 8 and fastened to a shoulder ('3 on the said sha t. The free end 25 of the spring is formed into an arm provided with a ball 26 or the like which may be depressed by the linger, so that the free end 25 of the spring comes out of catch with the grooves 2% when the sliding block 8 With the guiding bar is to he moved on the shaft 5 The sliding block 8 is removable by this looking device and may thus be removed when the guidingbar is not to be used.
Instead of being riveted to the knife ring 2 the shaft 5 may be fastened to a loose clamp or fork, which is screwed on to the fastening ring 2, so that th whole device may be removed or fastened to anyknife.
The sliding block may have the form which is shown in the drawing. In 3 there is shown a horizontal sleeve 27 inserted in the sliding block and having a certain length, the sleeve being slit lengthwise as indicated at 2"? and yieldingly clamping upon the shaft with the sliding block.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An adjustable slicing knife including a blade, a handle and a ring fastening the blade to the handle, a horizontal shaft riveted to the ring at right angles to the lengthof the knife blade and on which shaft is slida ly arranged a lockable and setta-ble sliding block, provided with a guiding bar fastened to it and arrai'iged parallel to the blade, the inner edge of which gui ding bar rests against the end surface of the object to be cut, the sliding block with the gr. ding bar being turnable on the shaft and Jrovided with a helical spring one end of which is fastened to the shaftand the other end of which is adapted to turn the knife bar downwardly with relation-t0 the knife edge, the sliding block also being provided with a stop-arm fastened to it, which stop-arm rests against the'back of the blade and determines the position of the spring actuated guiding bar in relation to the knife edge.
2. A locking device for the sliding block mentioned in the claim 1, characterized thereby that the stop-arm fastened to the sliding block is provided with rooves arranged parallel to the cutting sur ace of the blade, and that the helical spring includes an arm, which arm catches into the grooves in the stop-arm, when the slidin block with its guiding bar is in its fixed position in relation to the blade and also acts upon the stop-arm, so that it fastening ring.
