Description

Patented May 20, 1930 warren STATES [PATENT oFsicEl CLIFFORD J. GLEASON, OF woncnsrnn, MASSACHUSETTS, Assreitoia o "s. WRIGHT COMPANY, OF wonons'rnn, nassaon'usnrrs, A oonroas'rron or MASSACHUSETTS VACUUlVI MOP Application filed January 27, 1923. Serial 1%. 615,314.,
for its principal ObJGCt the provision of. 111621118 of a simple character for detachably connecting the mop to the nozzle of the cleaner, it being understood'that when I use the term nozzle I refer toeither the nozzle formmg a part of the cleaner itself or the nozzle of a hand tool such as is attached to the end i of a pipe used in connection with stationary 'or portable vacuum cleaning machines.
' Another object consists in constructing the nozzle in a novel manner to cooperate with the strands of the dry mop in such a way that whenthe suction is applied to the nozzle the strands will be drawn beneath the edge of the nozzle, to form a bearing surface, and for a distance into the slot of the nozzle, the strands being of such a length that they will not clog the nozzle opening.
With these and other objects in View, my invention consists in the novel details of construction and combination of parts as will be readily understood by reference to the following specification when considered in connection with theaccompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a top plan Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section with parts shown in elevation.
struction of the nozzle and the position of the inop with respect thereto, and
Fig. i is a detail, enlarged, showing one of the fasteners for securing the mop to the nozzle.
In the drawings 1 indicates the nozzle,
shown as a part of a hand tool, having a relieved that the manner of attaching-the mop 'to or detaching it from the nozzle, as well cess 2 formed in its under surface, the ends of this recess being curved as shown at 3 and the sides being outwardly flared or curved as shown at4. An opening 5 extends from the top ofthe nozzle and communicates with the recess as shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. A plate or casting 6 is secured to the top of the nozzle by means of the screws 7 or other suitable fastening means and extending the upper surface of the plate or casting is a sleeve'or socket 8 which communicates with the opening 5 andis adapted to receive the end of the handle or pipe forming a partof. I the tool of the vacuum cleaner. The outer side edges of the nozzle are inwardly beveled towards the bottom as shown at 9 and grooves 10 are formed intheend edges ofthefnozzle for apurpose whichwilllater appear.
My mop is adapted to be detachably connected to the nozzleandcomprises a strip of fabric 11 to which the Strandsor strings 12 are secured preferably by stitching through a strip 13 which passes throughthe... looped ends of the strands as more clearly I illustrated in Fig, 2 of the drawings; These strands or strings 12 are ofsucha length that whensuction is appliedito the nozzle they will be drawn beneath the edges of the nozale and into the recess '2. They are, however, not so vlongas to allow the ends to extend so far into the recess as to close, orclog the opening 5.- The beveled side edges 9 hold the strip 11 at such an angle, it being noted that the strip lies flatagainst the side edges and 'thatthe mopstrands extend beneath the ,bottom' so as to position the strands or jet-rings 12 so that they may be easily drawn underithef nozzle. The stripll, when the mop is in position upon the 'nozzle, will fencircle the edges of the nozzle and in order Fig. 3 is a fragmental longitudinal vertito prevent displacementof themop-but at cal section, enlarged, to show the end conthe same time allowing it to be easily placed in position or removed therefrom I provide he fasteners 14: which consist of the socket portions 15, carried by the strip, andthe headedportions lti secured to the side edges, preferablyjby the screws 17. Recesses 18 receive the headed portions of the fastener.
From the above detail description it isbe- V are sopositioned, and of'such a lengthythat when suction is applied to the. nozzle they will be drawnbeneath the bottom edges and form a surface for contact with the floor or other objectto prevent marring'thereof and to form a tight fit. As previously stated the r beveled side edges 9 properly positionthe strips 11 andthe strands 12 associated'therewith sothat the strands will be easily drawn beneath the nozzle. 'Ihe endgrooves form a space for the edge of thestrip '11 when the mop is drawn into position around the nozzle. The fasteners 14 form an easy means for connecting the mop to'or disconnecting it from the nozzle, and while I have described the socket portions of the fasteners asbeing I carried by the mop and the headed portions "secured to the nozzle it will be understood thattheir positions could be otherwise; 7
Where I have used the term vacuum clean-i 7 er it will be understood that the term is used in its broadest sense and includes the so:
i called suction sweepers andsuction cleaners.
Reference is herein made to my copending I V 5 application filed January 27, 1923; Serial No.
'Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters 'Patentiszi p V c p '1 Q1. In combination with a nozzle of a jvacuum cleaner having downwardly and'inwardly tapered side edges, a mop having a portion 7 adapted to lie flat against the side edges of Y p t the nozzle, and means earriedpart by the tapered side edges and part by the mop for directly connecting the mop to the nozzle.
2; In combinationjwith a nozzle of a vac uumcleaner havlng recesses 1n its end edges and downwardly and inwardly tapered side edges, a mop adapted to encircle the nozzle with a portion thereof received in theend edge recesses and a portion adapted to lie flat a ainst the side edges, and means carried part y the-taperedside edges and part by the mop for detachably connectingthe mop to V the nozzle.
r V :3. In combination with a vacuum cleaner i jand the surface to be cleaned.
including a nozzle adapted to normally contact with thejsurface to be cleaned and means 7 whereby a suction may be created through the l V nozzle, a dry mop inclu'ding'a plurality of strands and means carried partbythe nozzle and part by the'mop for direct interlocking engagement to detachably connect the 'mopto the nozzle; the strands of the. mop being of a length to be: drawn beneath the under surface of the nozzle when the suction is applied to form a substantialseal between the nozzle In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature. I
