It iS the common practice in retailbshoe Stores to keep each pair of Shoes in a separate 1o box, each box being marked to indicate ther Style, size and character of the shoe contained therein. Sometimes this data is printed on a label which is pasted on the end of the box and sometimes the data is printed directly I5 on the box end. e y -I ,A machine speciallydesignedfor printing directly on box ends is illustrated in vUnited States Patents No. 1,279,904, September 24th, 1918, and No. 1,390,388, September 13th, 1921. The type chase With which the present invention is concerned comprises the usual skeleton make-up frame 7 adapted to receive type members which may be separate type or a block 8 bearing type characters, the type member or members heilig locked in the frame 1 by quoins 9 in usual manner.
The parts thus far described are or may be all as usual in printing machines.
According to the present invention one side of the frame 7 is so constructed that separate interchangeable type elements 10 may be set or placed thereon or removed therefrom While the frame is held in the print ing head, such type elements when in place being positioned properly tomake a printed impression on the box end 3 simultaneously With the type which is located in the frame. These interchangeable type elements 10 may bear type characters representing figures, letters or Words and they are so mounted on the side ot the frame that they can be easily changed to produce diilerent printed impressions Without removing the type chase from the printing head.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the side 11 of the frame 7 is formed with a type-holding rib 12 on which the interchangeable type elements 10 are mounted.
EachA type element 10 is formed with the slot 13 and it is provided on its face 14 with a type character 15, said face 14 being so situated that when the type member is mounted on the rib 12 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the type character 15 occupies the same plane as the type characters 6. Y
To facilitate the handling of the inter changeable type members 10 each is provided with an upstanding extension or finger piece 16 b v which it may be manipulated. The
. type membersare locked on the typeholding rib 12 by means of a locking bar 17 Which is pivoted to the side 11 of the frame as shown at 18, said locking bar having at its upper edge a lip 19 adapted to overlie the shoulder 20 of each type element 10. This locking bar is provided with a handle 21 by which it may be swung from its operative position shown in Fig. 3 to its inoperative position shown in Fig. 4. Then in its inoperative position the type members are all released and can be readily removed from the rib 12 and thus any desired change in the type members may be made.
Associated with the type members 10 are spacers 22 which are adapted to be clamped to the rib 12 by set screws 23 and which may be usedto provide the required spacing betWeen-vvords and groups ofv numerals and also to hold the type members in desired position. These spacers are simply U- shaped members adapted to fit over the rib 12 and carrying the set screws 23 to bind against the rib.
The type members 10 may each have thereon a type character representing a single letter or figure. Some type members may have thereon a series of type characters to print a Word, such for instance as Oxford7 or Kid. In the set up shown in the drawings there is one group of type members 10 arranged to print 905712 and another single type member having type characters thereon to print the Word Oxtord; another group of type members 10 adapted to print 328A; another type member 10 having the type character thereon ada ted to print the Word Kid7 and a type c aracter adapted to print the figure 2. The groups of type members and the type members representing words are separated by suitable separat-ors 22.
In printing on the end of a box Where the box is turned bottom side up over the platen as shown in Fig. 2 the printing characters Will have to be inverted in order that the printed impression may be upright when the box is in its normal position. With the construction herein shoWn wherein the upper side 11 of the frame 7 carries the type members 10 the printed impression made by the type members 10 will be located on the box below that made by the printing block 8, and thus the data representing the style. size, case number and character of a shoe is on a line at the bottom of the box which is in accordance with the best practice.
Vith this construction the type members 10 can be easily and quickly set up on any type chase to print any desired data on the box Without removinv the type chase from the printing head 4. Vlien a change in the printed impression made by the type members 10 is desired the locking member 17 can be swung into its inoperative position shown in Fig. 4 and the type members 10 Which are to be changed can be readily removed and replaced by different ones, this change requiring only a very small space of time. When the change has been effected the type members 10 are relocked in position by swinging the locking bar 17 back into the position shown in Fig. 3.
The invention is very simple in construc tion but makes it possible to print atone operation both the unvarying dat-a, such as the t-rade name of the shoe and the manufacturers name, etc., and also the variable data. such as the case number, style, size, stick number, etc. Further the invention is such. that this variable data can be printed at the lower portion of the side of the box beneath the main printed impression according to the best practice. Y
I claim:
1. A type holder comprising a type-holding frame having an exterior type-holding Cil rib, type members each having a forked body portion to fit overV the rib, and a locking bar pivoted to the frame to turn about an axis parallel to the rib and when in operative position engaging the type members and locking them to the rib.
2. A type holder comprising atype-hold ing frame having an exterior rib, interchangeable type members each having a forked body portion to fit the rib and also each provided With a shoulder and a locking bar pivoted to the frame and adapted to enrib, a shoulder and an extension constituting a finger piece by Which the type member can be handled, and a locking bar pivoted to the frame and adapted to engage the shoulders of the type members and lock them in position on the rib.

A type holder comprising a skeleton make-up frame adapted .to hold ordinary type Within it7 said frame having a rib extending along one side thereof on its exterior, type members straddlingsaid rib and having printing faces which are in the plane of the printing faces of the type Within the frame, and a locking member pivoted to the frame to turn about an axis parallel to the rib and when in operative position locking the type members on the rib.
6. A type holder comprising a skeleton makeup frame having an open center in which ordinary type may be placed with their printing faces exposed on one'y side of the frame and their opposite faces exposed on the other Side, said frame having on its exterior means for removably holding separate type elements with their printing faces in the plane of the printing faces of the type situated within the frame.

A typeV holder comprising' a skeleton make-up frame having an open center in Vwhich ordinary type may be placed With their printing faces exposed on one side of said frame and their opposite faces exposed on the other side thereof, said frame having a typeholding rib on its exterior, interchangeable type members straddling said rib and removably retained thereon, and means to lock the interchangeable type members to the rib.
