@ASSTQN DQLEIENS, @fi PARIS, FWGE, A$SIGNOB TO ETABLISSEMENTS CH. PIERCE & a 2.. EOYTLET, 61? @1310, SEINE, FRANCE HEW-EEK? SLIP-THE CLOSURE FOR IHETALLIG BQXES Application filed August a, 1928, Serial No. 287,390, and in France August 17, 1927.
5 ticularly relates to hermetic slip-type closures fill in which the cap is held by friction within a flange of the body, the receptacle being \opened by means of a knife or coin inserted between the body and the cap, as is well known.
lln the metallic boxes with slip-type closures of this kind, said flange always projects more or less within the box, and generally forms a groove or recess which prevents the complete emptying of the contents of the box. On the other hand, the said groove prevents the proper cleaning and wiping oi the box.
The invention has for its object to provide metallic boxes of the type referred to in which the above drawbacks are eliminated, and which is essentially characterized by the provision oi an annular member suitably secured to the upper portion of the body and whose inner wall lies flush or substantially flush with the inner surface of the box body; preferably said member is arranged inwardly an inner groove of the body, so as to enresiliently in said groove when the cap is inserted therein, the lower edge, or any other suitable portion of said member, lying a distance from the inner face'or said 'rocve.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the upper edge of the cylindrical body is pressed or otherwise formed into an outwardly protecting rib of suitable outline, and an elastic annular member is secured thereto, with its inner face flush with the upper portion oi the cylindrical part of said body.
lhe appended drawing shows, by way of enarnple, various embodiments of the invention. In this drawing:
Fig. 1 shows, with the right-hand portion in elevation, and the left-hand portion in section, a first embodiment of the invention, the cap being disengaged from the body.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing another embodiment of the invention, with the cap on.
. In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 1, 1 denotes the cylindrical body of the box, which is formed at the upper part with an outwardly projecting rib 2, whose upper edge 3 has secured thereto in any suitable manner (clamping, fastening, setting, rolling, or welding) an elastic annular member 4 of cylindrical or slightly conical shape, the lower part of the inner wall thereof having the same diameter as the inner wall of the body 1. The height of the annular member is such that, when secured in place on rib 3, its lower edge bears against the upper part of the cylindrical body 1. Due to this are rangement, the annular member l is free to expand in groove 2* and possesses the necessary elasticity in order to tightly press upon the cap 5 when the latter is forced into the opening of the box. Furthermore, the inner wall of the box has no projecting part which would prevent the complete emptying of the contents of the box or the cleaning of the latter.
To remove the cap, a tool (screwdriver, coin, lmii'e, etc.) is inserted between member l and a projecting flange 5 of cap 5, as is well lrnown.
lfhe box shown in Fig. 2 is substantially the same as the preceding, the single difierence residing in that the annular member 6 is sprung over the outer rib 'Z'. Herein, the lower edge of member 6 also bears against the upper portion of the cylindrical part of the body 8, whereby it is free to expand in the groove 9 formed by rib 7. As shown, the cap 5 is rolled at 10 and forms a shoulder at 11 whereby a packing ring 12 may be pressed thereby against the top of the box. 13 denotes a rib adapted to increase the elasticity of the cap.
It will be observed that the provision of? the annular groove 2 or 9 may be advantageous in sdme cases, where gas is disenga ed from the substance contained in the OK (for example air disengaged during the heating of foods therein) said gas collecting in said groove.
Another advantage of the present invention resides in that the internal diameter of the cap may be equal to the external diameter of the box, thus facilitating the piling up, stocking and shipping.
Obviously the invention is not strictly limited to the embodiments above described and represented which have been selected only by way of example.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A metallic receptacle with hermetic sli type closure comprising a receptacle bo y having a smooth inner surface, an outwardly projecting rib forming an inner annular groove along the upper edge an annular 1 member secured to said rib and having a dc pending flange covering said groove and whose loweredge lies against the inner lower face of said groove, whereby said flange is free to expand into said annular groove, and the inner wall of said flange being exactly in line with the inner Wall of said receptacle body, a and a removable closing cap whose operating surface is adapted to frictionally engage said depending flange.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
GASTON DOLLIENS.
