, The present invention relates to an improved device which may be convenlently referred to as a tractor control, the same being especially, but not necessarily adapted foruse upon a tractor of the McCormick Deering' type.
From experience I have found that it is frequently difficult for a single person to V operate a tractor and form appliance, which is coupled thereto, under certain condltlons.
For example, when traveling over unusually rough ground or passing-over a ditch or the like, the operator must have at his command both hands for safe operation of the plow as well as the tractor.
This makes it substantially impossible to actuate the carburetor throttleat'this time, and requires the operator to placehis foot on. the clutch and to throw it out of operation momentarily. I
is thrownout, the engine runs wild for the time being, frequently resulting in burning out of the bearings. i q Y Having observedthis from time to time I have discovered the need for a device which 'ill permit the engine to be throttled down The invention, previously stated, comprises a foot control actuating device for cutting down the speed of the engine by operating the carburetor throttle and temporarily throwing out of operation the governor. The invention is however not to be confused with a foot accelerator because it. operates in a substantially reverse manner;
The particular details and their relative arrangement in asociation, and method of ap-f plication will become more readily appa'rent from the following description and drawings.
In the drawings Y Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of a conventional type'of tractor showing the improved foot controlled device associated therewith.
vide a suitable foot pedal 9 andatthispoint v Hence, even though the clutch the freedom of use of both hands to carry out Figure 2 is anenlarged perspecuye' iew certain of theidetails. v q I Refemfig owto. th .d'rawings by m Inerals it will-be observed that thefreference" character 3 designates thecu'stomary trans- Q mission, f the engine,5 the carburetor, Gfthfi governor, 7 the handoperated throttle con-Q trolledrod. 1 These are ordinary details and; K are merely shownand referred to for urpose, 1 of illustration of the manner, ofuse. In carrying out the inventionI provide a" longitudinally movable foot. controlled rod. 8. The rear end of this rod is formed to pro it extends brackets 10.
through appropriateguide. It, also extends through, additional guide brackets 11 on the frame, and. at this point I it isprovided with adjustable stops 12. The forward portion embodies an offset"v portion 13 with which .a return spring 14. is connected. 1 i
The forward end of the right an ularlpaa 13 connects with one of the arms of a bell 5 crank15, pivotally mounted on supporting. bracket 16' attached either to the; engineer thegovernor as shown. I Connected with the I T other arm ofthe bell crank is a link 17 which is in. turn connected with, a throttle valve; shaft 18leading to and operatively connect-f ed witha throttle valve of the carburetor 5; In 3 this connection I v might state" that the. aforesaid hand controlled rod 7 is provided with-a depending link 19 having .anelon gated loop 20 operatively connected with the shaft 18, I'WOIlld also call attention to addition'al link 21 connected with the shaft 18 and operatively connected with the governor 6.
As before pointed out, it is difiicult for one man toproperly manipulate a tractor and plow or a similar appliance under. certain working conditions. For. example, when a ditch is approached and careful driving is necessary, both hands are occupied, one to steer the tractor andv the other one to regulate, the pl'ow,thereby not allowing use of the hand throttle. Hence, there is no way to slow 2 r r i g 1,757,660
ever, it is easy to do this Without throwing out the clutch but by simply placing the foot r on the pedal and'pushin'g forwardly on the 7 operating rod. Hence through the medium of the complemental mechanism, the carburetor is throttled down and the governor ternporarily thrownout of use.
The device is characterized by exceptional simplicity and durability, and is capableotfulfilling the requirements ,oii a structure of this class in a dependable and; efficieiit manner;
